152.0. "1991: Year in Review" by WMOIS::HORNE_C (HORNET-THE FALL GUY) Mon Mar 02 1992 17:01

How about a session of folks most memorable musical moments of the last
year or so. Shows you liked shows you didn't. any musical highlights.
    any thing you found interesting.

For staters I'm a little shocked at all the hype over the U2 Tour.
Believe me I love em but geez give me a break.

Without a doubt it was the Anthrax/Iron Maiden show, and Alice
    Cooper at Great Woods.

As far as U2 goes, they are pulling all this stuff so things won't
be as out of control as last time, but IMHO it's only going to
    be worse!

Slipknot finally getting it together and getting their first album (tape) out.
Four years to the day (well almost) after I started managing them.

It's about time:-). and it is actually selling.

152.7300 confessed critics say...VERGA::CLARKTue Mar 03 1992 15:1632
This week's Village Voice has the results of an annual poll of 300 pop
music critics ("1991 Pazz & Jop Critics' Poll"). FWIW, their top 10
albums are shown below. [If you're interested in albums 11-40, plus
singles, EPs, Reissues, and videos results, find the 3/3/92 issue.]

1. Nirvana, "Nevermind"
2. Public Enemy, "Apocolypse 91... The Enemy Strikes Back"
3. REM, "Out of Time"
4. U2, "Achtung Baby"
5. P.M. Dawn, "Out of the Heart, of the Soul, and of the Cross: The Utopian
                Experience"
6. Richard Thompson, "Rumor & Sigh"
7. Matthew Sweet, "Girlfriend"
8. Metallica, "Metallica"
9. Chris Whitley, "Living With the Law"
10. Mekons, "Curse of the Mekons"

Bob Dylan's "Bootleg Series Vols.1-3" would've placed 6th if votes for
it as a reissue had been included in the albums tally.

Floating just below this group in the albums tally are: Guns N' Roses
(Illusion II), Ice-T, Jimmie Dale Gilmore, My Bloody Valentine, Sonny
Sharrock (Ask the Ages), Ice Cube, Neil Young (Arc/Weld), Pixies, Seal,
Guns N' Roses (Illusion I), Van Morrision, Bob Dylan (box), John Prine,
    Bonnie Raitt, etc. etc.

Reissue favorites include James Brown box, Stax-Volt box, Ray Charles
box, Phil Spector box, Patsy Cline box, Howlin' Wolf box, Clash on
Broadway, Fats Domino, Didn't It Blow Your Mind (70s soul hits), and MC5
    Kick Out the Jams.

Always an off-putting, but fascinating, read.... - Jay

I'm glad to see them agree with me on a couple things! I'm psyched that they
recognized Chris Whitley's astonishing debut album (I wish the public would
now!).

Seeing Van Morrison in concert in Edinburgh, Scotland, last August. It
was outdoors, just outside the castle. Wonderful.

Also, another fantastic Petty concert at Great Woods.

I know what WOULD have been my musical highlight...seeing Stevie Nicks
in my very own home town, at Holman Stadium (NOT park!) in Nashua NH,
with my friend Stephanie. We even had excellent seats...JUST behind
    the "golden circle".

But...it was not meant to be.

I think the biggest highlight of 1991 for me personally was
playing at the Channel in Boston twice. Also, going back in the
studio. Recorded a 5 song EP in December at Barking Spider studio.
First experience doing 24 track and using 2 inch tape, and DAT.

For being totally unfamiliar with their stuff, I actually liked them.
We had floor seats a few rows back so it was easy to get caught up in
    the energy of it all.
