133.0. "Michael Bolton" by 19067::RICHARDSON () Tue Feb 04 1992 19:25

Would anyone know about a Michael Bolton Concert someplace in New
England? I heard something a little while ago on some NH radio
station about a concert in Maine, but nothing further. I'd like to
take my wife (a quasi-fan) to see him some time. Any ideas?

The concert in Maine was on January 21. As far as I know he's
done all the shows in NE that he was going to on this tour.

Sorry! I saw him in Providence and the show was excellent.

Though he is pompous and too self assured, he is
quite a songwriter and has a nice raspy voice.

He sang GEORGIA ON MY MIND only inches away from
me in Nashua.

It was a dream come true for me. Never did I think
someone I enjoyed so much would come to Nashua of all
places.

Hope you make it to see him somewhere.

Bye the way, he writes with Diane Warren a lot.
She too is quite a writer.

Michael is quite a writer. As a matter of fact he is my all time
favorite artist. Yes he does seem pompous at times. I read in People
mag. today that he is being sued by a company representing the Isley
Bros. Apparently they say his song Love Is A Wonderful Thing is very
close to the Isley Bros tune of the same name. I wonder if there is
any truth to this. I have never heard the I. Bros tune. Has anyone
    else heard it?

Geez, does anyone remember Michael when he was using his real name
(Bolotin). He released his first LP for RCA back in the mid seventies
(he was dismissed at the time as grade-C Joe Cocker imitator), then he
played in the NY-CT area in the late seventies as a solo (used to do a
gig in New Haven every Sunday night, just playing acoustic guitar and
singing). Then he had two albums for Polydor with a sort-of-Southern
rock band called Blackjack whose lead player Bruce Kulick is now in
Kiss. When I was living in CT, these albums were hot sellers locally.
I'm surprised RCA and Polydor haven't tried to jump in on the
    Bolton-mania by reissuing this stuff.

I don't care much for what he's doing now but give him points for
pereverance. He's certainly earned his success the hard way.

re -3

Michael is pompous and made an audience wait nearly
an hour before he appeared on stage in Nashua...seems
he hadn't finished playing a game of hoop back stage
yet or he wasn't finished with Brooke Shields (both
unconfirmed rumours).

I waited, I liked him, though admittedly he has
a chip on his shoulder a mile wide.....

Alot of people probably don't even remember "Everybody's Crazy",
which was his 1st "hit", per se. And if they remember it, they
probably don't even realize it's him ... since he's regressed to
    	sappy ballads.

    RE: .3

Dave, *I* also saw that Isley Brothers' track (it was featured on
a compilation disc released on a relatively-unknown label) and
sampled it out of curiosity--and the tunes are NOTHING alike; only
the title ("Love Is A Wonderful Thing") is identical. The Isleys
is more of a stroll/blues tempo, whereas Michael Bolton's track is
    upbeat and perky.

For my taste, he beats his breast a little too much--I guess he
feels he has to overemote and go a little off the deep end to
demonstrate that he has soul. I liked him much better before all
the hype set in...for me, his best effort is "That's What Love Is
All About" (after he'd made his bones as a writer, and after his
career as a pseudo-rocker [under his real surname of Bolotin]
stalled). He seemed more sincere--and the anguish in his voice
    was toned down considerably.

    ...Still, he's a rugged, good-looking specimen...He can hang his
leather jacket on MY coat rack any time...!!!

But seriously, folks...I'm "eh" on Bolton. He WRITES good, but I like
Laura Branigan's version of "How Am I Supposed to Live Without You"
better than his, even if he DID write it.

"At the risk of starting another hair war..." (pardon me for the
plagiarizing, K.C., but I never said I was above stooping to
    stealing something good!! >:^)

I don't see where Michael's hair is any more offensive (or less
offensive, depending on your P.O.V.) than that of Matthew and
Gunnar Nelson. But truth be told, blondes in general never did
that much for me..."it's a brunette thing, you understand." >:^

But tonsorial preferences aside, something tells me Michael's
going to end up as a "flavor-of-the-month." I hate to bring this
up, but this is the same thing that happened with Richard Marx,
yet another songwriter/poster-boy who had a flurry of hits and
a wave of popularity, and who is currently suffering from air-
wave apathy (even the background warblings of Luther Vandross
couldn't resuscitate the otherwise-comatose and utterly limp
"Keep Coming Back," his most recent single).

But maybe Steve has the right idea...Anybody wanna join me...???

I don't know. Hair aside, I have to speak on M.B.'s behalf.
I know alot of his songs may seem sappym but that is what he does good!

I heard some of his "grade C Joe Cocker stuff" on the tape Michael
Bolatin "The early years" and to tell you all the truth, it sucked.

He is a romantic vocalist, that's the sound that best fits his voice.
And after all, isn't that what he's all about. I don't think it
was his songs, or his looks, or even his hair that has carried him
this far. It must be the power in which he sings, and also the
emotion that seems to pour through the stereo.

Mabey some you can help understand why artist that had 1 hit song
on their album got nominated for best album, but Time Love & Tenderness
did not, when it has spawned 5 hits, and still going?
I could not belive Natalie Cole, and Amy Grant got nominated.
Both are good artist in their own right, but I have heard both CD's
and they cannot compare to T,L & T. They only had ONE SINGLE at the
time the nominations were made? Whats up?

Give M.B. a chance. I think he will be a stayer in the musik world!

    Dave.

_I_ never said that he was BAD...

    I just don't think he's that GOOD.

Sure, Amy Grant and Natalie Cole won, although they only had one hit
song apiece per album...but each of their ONE songs beat the heck of
MOST of what Mr. B. releases. (IMHO, of course).

Even for his gendre, Barry "I Write The Songs" Manilow can STILL sing
    circles around Michael.

I WILL give credit where credit is due, tho. He can WRITE good music.

All we need to know about Michael Bolton is that sappy song he does for the
Kaye Credit Jewelers commercial.

Bring back "It's OK to owe Kaye til payday . . ."

Oh yeah, as someone pointed out this Bolton thanked everybody in his entire
circle of acquaintances and associates for helping him achieve such great
success with "When a Man Loves a Woman", without finding time to mention
Percy Sledge.

I was just gonna enter a Michael Bolton note in the "...don't get it"
topic, but now I can say I just don't like him.

Bolton was quoted in Rollingstone this week to say, refering to
any critics that didn't think he deserved the Grammy, "They can kiss my ass!".

Way to get those size 10s in your mouth Mike.

Bolton, holding his Grammy, doing an Uncle Sam "I Want YOU" pose
(pointing right to the camera), and the caption reads,

    Gotta love it!!!

133.21Good music, Bad personallity.CGVAX2::LEMIREThu Mar 26 1992 21:3722
I agree with .18. I was shocked that M.B. did not mention Percy
    Sledge.
I can't belive he said kiss my ass to the critics. Good one.
K.C. I have to disagree with the Barry M. comparison however.
Barry has a real sappy voice to me. It just seems to lack the power
that Michael has. But he must be quite the ****head in person.

I first saw him 2 years ago in Great Woods with Kenny G. and I
remember thinking to myself, what a looser as he spent 5 minutes
telling the fans about winning the best male vocalist grammy
for Soul Provider. Nothing like blowing your own horn Michael.

Still, in spite of his obvious personallity disorder, I will
still call him one of the best vocalist I have ever listened to.
