94.0. "Women in Music" by USPMLO::DESROCHERS () Fri Dec 13 1991 16:19

	Women in music...

	Every Friday, the Boston Herald prints it's "Top 10 Classic
	Rock tunes on this date in 19...". The date is usually
	early 70's thru 80 or so.

	This week is 1973 and the Top 10 are;

	   1. Goodbye Yellow Brick Road Elton John
	   2. Hello It's Me Todd Rundgren
	   3. The Joker Steve Miller Band
	   4. Helen Wheels Paul McCartney and Wings
	   5. D'yer Maker                     Led Zeppelin
	   6. Angie                           Rolling Stones
	   7. Rock On                         David Essex
	   8. Knockin' on Heaven's Door Bob Dylan
	   9. Love Reign O'er Me The Who
	  10. My Old School Steely Dan

	I've seen this list for the last year or so and can hardly
	remember a female tune in it. Once in awhile, Carly Simon
	or Carol King but very seldom.

	In 20 years, a look back to the 80's and 90's will have at
	least 1/2 the Top 10's be female songs.

	Times have changed - Tom

Re .0:

I've just gotta comment...

I regard myself as fairly liberated on all counts. I tend to have some trouble
with the "auto-guilt" reflex, though. I'd tend to rephrase your parting comment
as:

"_If_ times have changed, we may look back to the 80's and 90's and see top songs
which succeeded regardless of their performers' gender."

Excellent music shouldn't have to observe gender quotas in either direction,
IMHO.

If the point of .0 is that the music industry still shows a strong male-oriented
bias, I have zero experience to confirm or deny it. However, if more guys than
gals go into the music business, for whatever their reasons, that may or may not
change in twenty years.

One man's (<--- with neither pride nor shame) opinion-

RE: .1

Hey, rather defensive, aren't we? :-)

I think you mis-read .0. It sounded to me like he/she was saying that
things are much better in the 80s and 90s.

    	Please, I'm not complaining at all. Just making a point after
    	reading those lists.

    	They've come a long way, baby.

    I thought "Angie" by the Rollin Stones came out later than '73 ? Say
    '77 or so?

    Well, I heard that Lita Ford won a Best Guitarist award somewhere.

94.6Admission of sore point...ATIS01::ASHFORTHMon Dec 16 1991 16:0114
Re .2:

Well, defensive isn't exactly correct, but I'll gladly plead guilty to this being
a long-standing sore point with me. I don't think female musicians need any
special preference because of their gender- excellence will out in any case.
However, I *do* think that explicitly identifying female musicians as deserving
of special treatment is, to me, a form of insult- sort of like we _guys_ have to
"spot them a few points," as it were. Yeah, right- tell that to Bonnie Raitt,
Mariah Carey, Madonna, Pat Benatar, Joni Mitchell, Stevie Nicks, Deborah
Henson-Conant,......

Didn't mean to offend; hope I've made my comments more clear.

    "Angie" was off of Goat's Head Soup, which came out in 73.

    Got it for Christmas that year, that's why I remember. Great poster
    inside. Grossed my mother out. Which seems to be key when you're 13.
