91.0. "Whatever happened to..." by TAEC::LADRET (Gisement epuise (.neq.) mine de rien) Tue Dec 10 1991 09:25

I don't know if this kind of note was supposed to be put in the 'reserved area'
24 ..30. If so Mr. Moderator feel free to move it.

But I was wondering whatever happened to :

Joan Armatrading (I haven't heard of her since 'Me myself I' about 10 years
ago)

Maxim Nightingale (I remember a big hit from her in the mid 70's but that's all)

Thanks in advance for any info,

Regards,

Didier

If there are any artist that you just have to know "where are they
now?", I would highly recommend calling WZLX (radio station in Boston)
on a Sunday night (6-10pm) and talk to Barry Scott. This guy keeps up
all of the lost ones and has been very helpful when I was digging
around for certain albums or groups. I'm aware that this note was set
asside for the trivia side of most but just in case you HAVE to know...

    About Janis some info though......
She is now around and about TV-touring through Europe promoting her
"best of..."album(which is doing rather well in the Netherlands.)

A song from her of which I lost the title but is about a girl who just
turned 17 was performed live on TV a month ago and I must say,her
performance only with spanish guitar was impeccable and pure.....
.....a real gem.Solely on that alone Janis her CD whent rocketing,

Last year, I ran into her during the Philadelphia Folk Festival (she
was performing, I was attending). She played Saturday night as I recall
and on Friday whe was visting the craft booths, like I was. We were
both looking at the backpack guitars, but they were too expensive for
both of us. She is really short (around 5') and looks like she had some
hard miles behind her, if you catch my drift. Her set on Saturday night
was one of the better ones that evening.

According to a blurb that appeared in CD review many months ago,
Janis Ian has a current project "in the can". I expected
to see the new release before Christmas, and have no idea
what the delay is all about, especially since her European
tour was probably scheduled in part to promote the delayed
release. She may have recorded the new album on her own and
still lack the backing of a label.

Talk Talk released an L.P. two months ago called Laughing Stock.
Thay've also released two or three limited edition CD singles as their
token promotion. The l.p. is a little like Spirit of Eden , not in the
instrumentation but in the lengths of the songs and the production .
    It's good but it's miserable.
They are also in the process of sueing their old record company for
releasing "History Revisited" a bunch of remixes form "Natural History"
. The band (Mr. Hollis ) claim it was done without their consent and
that's it's exploitative. They've really been quite busy so done expect
to hear from then again for a while.

ABC have changed record labels. They now record for Parlophone.

They released a single last summer called "Love Conquers All" which
peaked at no.44 in the U.K. singles charts. They also released an L.P.
called something like ABCACAB (can't actually remember off hand) . The

Thomas Dolby has released 2 CD's since "Science" and both are
terrific! Nothing in the last 2 years tho. The last one had
two great tunes that really stood out - one about a Ferrari

I'm wondering about these 80's groups:

    The Thompson Twins
    The Waitresses
    Soft Cell
    The Romantics
    Chiliwack
    Glass Tiger
38 Special (haven't heard a peep since their '87 hit "Second Chance")
Pure Prairie League (actually more of a 70's group)

    Wax/Andrew Gold (I didn't know they released *2* albums!!)
The Alan Parsons Project (another 70's group)
Ambrosia (I heard they may be re-forming?)

FWIW, I, too, want to add my hearty recommendations for Thomas Dolby's
"Aliens Ate My Buick"--a clever, witty and well-crafted collection
of songs (with great musicians--including a guest appearance by the
Wizard of Oddballs, George Clinton), of which "Airhead" is indeed a
standout, though only one of many highlights.

    I'm a day--well, O.K, several days--late and a dollar short, but I
just wanted to add a caveat to my earlier list. Those groups AREN'T
necessarily old faves of mine (certainly not The Waitresses--I hated
"I Know What Boys Like"). I'm just curious to see if they're all
still active or waiting tables at some chic restaurant hoping to
    be rediscovered.

Got one more to add...Survivor (aka "the poor man's Journey"). For
awhile, they coasted from the fallout of their big hit from the
"Rocky III" soundtrack, "Eye Of The Tiger." I know that their gui-
tarist/writer Jim Peterik, was at one time a member of Ides Of March
("I'm your vehicle, baby..."), but it's been quite a few years (may-
be seven??) since they've had any real chart action that I can recall.

And I'm mildly interested in whatever happened to Loverboy (aka "the
    poor man's Foreigner")...

As for Annie Lennox: I'm glad she's still pumpin'. I guess she had

Re .60:

Sylvia, what's this about "saxophone sex symbol" Candy Dulfer?
She does some wonderful playing on Van Morrison's "Hymns to
the Silence" album. I take it from your note that she now
has her own album out? Have you heard it? Can you tell me
more (perhaps in another note)? Thanks!
91.64Album is `Saxuality'ULYSSE::MILDERNihil obstatThu Apr 23 1992 09:3612

Candy Dulfer is the daughter of one of Holland's most influential and
innovative sax players/composers, Hans Dulfer - the man behind "Hans
Dulfer and the perikels" and "Reflud". Her own album (I *think* it's
called Saxuality but will check) came out in '90 and is worth a try:
good funky/jazzy stuff with the exception of one or two dull ballads.
She also worked with Prince (Graffiti Bridge). So there's no sense in
calling her a sex symbol... She may be good-looking but that doesn't
mean she's not an excellent musician...

I re-found these a week ago and noticed Steve Gadd on drums,

After one album each for Polydor and Columbia and two for Nemperor,
Andy Pratt faded from the major label scene. He released an EP locally
(in MA) in the early eighties and has since dropped totally out of
sight. As heir to the Pratt and Whitney money, I guess he didn't need
the money. The Columbia album is out on CD now and is well worth
    adding to any collection.

It's not uncommon for printed lyrics to include an intentional error so the
publishers can catch illegal use of their property. This includes even lyrics
printed on the back of albums.

Some people, Bob Dylan, for instance, won't allow full lyrics to be published
at all, except in the sheet music. Dylan usually omits a whole verse.

I saw him a couple of years back at the Channel. He was in great shape
musically and physically. He had a good band and played most of the show
with his shirt off. It was an interesting oldies show because most of his
hits have been remade in the past few years by contemporary groups.
Obviously a smart guy, pretty nice, not puffed up. "When it's been going
well for you for a few years and then it stops, boy, that's something. And
when it stops it definitely STOPS. I can attest to that."

Peter Hammill is still kicking around - he was at Nightstage within the
last two years (maybe 3?), perhaps in support of a new album (?). I
think Nic Potter was with him (on bass) - he named him, and the name
was familiar as I sat there, but I'm not sure whether it was Nic or
another vaguely familiar bass player's name. Peter seems to pop out
a new album every so often - back in '88 he released a collaboration
with Guy Evans. (Guy and Nic being ex-VdGG). Think I'll pop it in the
    CD player now...

Of course Gary Wright went on to greater fame and fortune. Original

even richer than Gary Wright by starting Foreigner. Original bassist

Alan Hull did a few solo albums after the band disbanded in the mid

Though it isn't strictly a bass topic, I've been hangin' with this group
too long not to want to tip my friends about a new band. Especially when
Lee Sklar is the bassist. :-)

Besides, my .sig line about "preserving the roadhouse tradition" is legit,
so:

The group is 1/3 ZZTop, 1/3 SRV, and 1/3 Allman Bros, and the whole
thing is generously seasoned with sprinklings of the Kentucky Headhunters,
and (believe it or not), Van Halen...(!?)

Making it even sweeter is that the production values on their debut record
are first rate, and the songs themselves are considerably above average.
Their overall *musicianship* and *tightness* is what takes my breath away,
though. This is n-o-t simple-to-play stuff, either. Very clever, most of
it.

Their name? "Barefoot Servants". Should be easy to find at any reasonably
stocked shop. Just released.

A final semi-caution to those who may be inclined to give this record a try,
on the strength of this recommendation, but haven't liked most roadhouse music
in the past:

The swampy, Allman-y, bluesy material is largely confined to the first half
of the disc, and the more progressive, funk-groove, Van Halen-y stuff shows
up on the second half. Meaning give *all* the tracks a listen before making
up your mind.

Enjoy.

Rock on,

George

Richard Greene was a bluegrass fiddler (he had worked with Bill Monroe
in fact) before Seatrain; after that band folded, he went back to
bluegrass, although of the more "newgrass" variety.

He was involved in some seminal projects like the "Muleskinner" album
with Clarence White, and recordings with David Grisman. He recorded a
solo LP for Rounder in the late seventies/early eighties and has also
    done sessions.

the record label (which label escapes me at the moment).

Ray Shulman (bass) became a producer who has worked with acts
    such as the Sugar Cubes.

Kerri Minnear (keys) joined a Christian commune, and I don't think
he is performing outside of that context.

John Weathers (drums) still tours as a hired gun with various acts.

And Gary Green seems to have evaporated nicely.

Thanks for the reply Brian. G.G. sure did a fine
job of composing some rather interesting tunes. A friend
of mine saw them, late 70's I believe, headlining the good
ol' Orpheum in Boston, MA. According to him, they did a
remarkable job delivering their music live, especially
    the voice deliverance.

It's on "Totally 80's", a 2-CD collection possibly not sold
in stores. I got it for Christmas last year from my neigh-
bor, who bought a bunch of copies to hand out to a bunch of
people, so if you want I can find an address or phone # for
    	you.

Or browse through the "Assorted" or "Collections" section of
your nearest Strawberries and look for 80's collections, of
which there are a whole bucketload, and it's bound to be on
    	at least 1.

"Sunglasses at Night" is also on the 80's compilation Living in
Oblivion 3. I saw a copy of it at a Newbury Comics once.
