85.0. "Enya" by TYFYS::SLATER (As we see ourselves, so do we become.) Wed Dec 04 1991 20:50

                             ===============

                                 E N Y A

                             ===============

This note will be for discussing the mysterious Irish female musician
    named "Enya" and her music.

I have her first and third albums and find the music to be absolutely
magnificent, epecially the third album which is entitled "Shepherd
Moons". The fact that she composes, arranges, and performs most all of
her own music, in addition to doing the vocals, makes her all the more
    extraordinary.

Her first album, entitled "Enya", had a very powerful cut on it called
    "Orinco Flow".

Any other Enya fans out there?

I'm sorry but there's a few mistakes there that I must clarify. Firstly
to be pedantic there are FOUR Enya L.P.s:

THE FROG PRINCE (did not chart)

             ENYA (no.67 UK didn't chart in U.S.)

WATERMARK (no.5 and double platinum in U.K. no.25 and
    gold in U.S.)

SHEPARD MOONS (no.1 in U.K. and platinum so far)

The FROG PRINCE is a sountrack to a cartoon . ENYA is music from the
t.v. series THE CELTS (thus it was released by BBC records). ORINOCCO
FLOW is on WATERMARK (all four million copies of it!).

I'm not an ENYA fan but I find her music pleasant to listen to.I do
hope that loadsa replies are forthcoming in this note tho' (patriotism
and all that) . The only reason I didn't set this one up is cos I'm not
    that interested in her .

I believe she is a classically trained musician, so this might account
    for her musical prowess.
"The Celts" and Watermark are really excellent albums, blending the
typically celtic minor key themes into most pleasant offerings.

I've got only one release by her..."Watermark", and there are some
beautiful pieces on it. (I didn't care for "Orinoco FLow that much, but
    the video was interesting.)
                                                   ,
The song I'm interested in is "Na Laetha Geal M'Oige". I first heard it
on an FM station while sea kayaking up in British Columbia in 1988. The
combination of her haunting voice and the brooding, sustained synth
chords with the visual experience of being (seemingly alone) amongst
fog-shrouded islands and calm waters was so powerful, I don't think
    I'll ever forget it.

Is there a translation of the lyrics (from Gaelic, I guess) available ?

85.4the Glen Frye of New AgeSALSA::MOELLERmake up for it in VolumeThu Dec 05 1991 17:1018
I've got all the albums. Except for the first one that didn't chart.
It's a smooth listening experience, and she's got a gorgeous if soft
voice, and the backgrounds are expertly self-effacing. But the
instrumentals are bad New Age, and she uses a cheap sampled grand piano
most of the time (even on the latest album).

There's little or no musical growth evident - the second one sounds
like the first one sounds like the third one. There's only so many
solo voice-with-muted-synth-pad pieces I can listen to. Very
occasionally, especially on Watermark, she uses overdubbed voice chords
percussively to great effect. Overall I find myself pretty uninterested
in the Shepherd Moons album, as it covers the EXACT same ground as the
    other two albums.

I classify her as a minor talent and a one-trick pony. Maybe two
tricks, max. Not bad, not great.

Go check out her family's recordings. Clannad was using the massed
vocals against synth backgrounds years ago. They are a band of two
sets of twins (cousins) plus another cousin and they all sing.
    Gorgeous stuff.

Their earliest recordings are acoustic Celtic folkmusic. The newest
ones are pop/rock. The ones that are most like the Enya stuff are
"Magical Ring" (Tara/Shanachie) and "Legend" (RCA).

So she's related to Clannad? I remember seeing one Clannad album with two
females was she perhaps one?

She's a sister of the lead singer Maire Ni Bhrenneain. She was also in
Clannad for two years ending in '82.

85.10Anyone for Ghost Stories?.....NEWOA::CHOHANSShrenit ChohanTue Dec 17 1991 11:2616
Hi I'm Shrenit (Shez). I also enjoy listening to Enya's music. I've been
a fan of her music ever since she released Orinocco Flow back in 1988. I've
got three of her albums and I didn't know about her first album.
I was wondering if it's available in record shops and if it's just
as good as her other three.
Just out of interest does anyone know about the ghost story that
Evening falls is based on? When I heard it sent shiver's down my spine. The
story is potrayed excellently through the lyrics of the song and Enya's
haunting voice adds to the atmosphere of the the spooky tale. The reason I ask
is,that I can vaguely remember it.

I would be grateful if anyone can tell me where I can find her first
album. I've tried in most of well known record stores. NO LUCK !

                        Newsweek Article Mentions Enya

The current issue of Newsweek magazine (the one with Patrick Buchannon
on the cover) has an article about a new technological type of music.
Can't remember the exact term, but the short of it is that this music,
the way it is engineered in the studio, can be "felt" as well as heard.

They mention Enya and her newest album, "Shepherd Moons", and say that
this album falls into this new type of recorded music. Some of the
comments they make about the album are not so complimentary. In one
part of the section on Enya, the author writes something to the effect
that (paraphrased) - at this level, it ceases to be music and becomes
    sounds passing through soft tissue...

It's interesting to read, though not as complimentary as I would be
about the album. There is a picture of Enya included, she is dressed
in a long black dress, and there is an inset picture of the "Shepherd
    Moons" album cover.

By the way, I have turned several friends on to the album, and I know
about six people that swear it's now their favorite album.

There's something pretty magical about it. Hard to put into words, but
I do get into "another place" when I listen to it. To me, with her
power to create and perform this magical music, she is the female
    equivilant of Andreas Vollenweider.

    Bill Slater

PS: I wrote Enya a hand-written letter last week and requested an
autographed picture. If she writes me back, and I expect that
she will, I'll post some of the information about her here under
         this notes topic.

    >the way it is engineered in the studio, can be "felt" as well as heard.

Uh-huh. I'll pick up the article. They MAY be alluding to a new
Roland device, the (?) Space Processor (?) which allegedly allows sound
to move in 3 dimensions (besides time, the fourth) when reproduced on a
standard stereo thru speakers. '3D' sound has been around a long time
with 'holographic' or 'binaural' recording technique, but required that
you listen thru headphones to get the sound positioning. This new
Roland device, over $20K, is getting a lot of attention and a lot of
major acts are using it in the final mixdown to stereo.

Enya was interviewed (poorly) this morning (I took the day off) by Joan
Lunden on Good Morning America. Enya was pushing "Shepherd Moons".
Talked about the overdub process and how she'd like to (but wasn't)
put a band together to perform some of her recorded material.

She claimed to have performed over 500 vocal overdubs on some
unspecified piece. Didn't say she kept them all, just that she did 500
    dubs on one piece.

We have one of her CD's (the most recent, I believe). It's very mood
inspiring/relaxing. I enjoy it. My wife and I heard it in the
background in trinket shop in Vancouver while on vacation. We asked
the store owner who it was and the rest is history.
