65.0. "Vance Gilbert" by PIPE::GOOD (Michael Good) Wed Nov 13 1991 15:26

If I had to pick someone from the Boston area to be the next person to
breakout into the national folk/pop music scene, it might well be Vance
Gilbert. I first heard him a couple of months ago opening for The
Bobs, and several people felt he stole the show from them.

Vance is an African-American folkie with an individual voice, both as a
singer and a writer. His tenor is a nice change from the regular run
of folk baritones. His songs cover a range of topics, including
effects of racism on "Good Cup of Coffee" and humor in "VW Bug". Many
concentrate on different aspects of relationships, most notably "I'm
Watching My Heart" ("I can't be your guardian angel / I can barely
watch over myself..."). In concert he sang an a capella Irish folk
song, and a soon-to-be-classic about a manager's marketing idea for
him: country & western rap ("Yodel-ee-ii-oo / Can't touch this...")

Vance is commanding in concert but also has a nice tape available
called "Face to Face". Basically it's just Vance singing and playing
guitar, with a few overdubs. Here are the song titles. All are by
Vance except for "The Nearness of You" bu Hoagy Carmichael and Frank
    Loesser:

      Face to Face
      I'm Watching My Heart
      VW Bug
      Good Cup of Coffee
When Jimmy Falls in Love ("my greatest hit")
Be Gone, Be Good, So Long
      Just Us
      Sweet Freedom (a capella)
      Drifters Love
      Relentless Love
      Toto's Tune
      The Nearness of You

Yeah i saw Vance at the Iron horse opening for tuck and Patti and he
was superb. I have the tape and reccomend it highly although i think
the tape maybe a little dated and doesnt do justice to how far he ahs
    come since he rocrded it.
