    27 years old, married (6 years), no children (yet), 2 cats.
    
    Music interests...many and varied!  I have been collecting records
    since I was 11 and now have over 500 45's, over 200 albums, mega
    cassettes, and starting in on CD's (maybe about 30).
    
    Sang with my sisters (in harmony) as a child, sang in school choruses
    from 3rd grade (when I was drafted into the upper grade chorus) to
    12th.
    
    Favorites too numerous to mention...easier to say that I DON'T like
    Madonna, Guns 'n' Roses and Rap.

    I've been known to pick up a drum stik occasionally and I love to try
    any and all instruments.

    I'm not sure where this note belongs, but yesterday I received a
    package in the mail.  Upon opening it, I was surprised to find a
    cassette tape by none other than ex-Music Noter (and ex-DECcie)
    Ashley Morris.
    
    The cassette is Ashley's self-titled debut and is professionally
    packaged, etc.  There are ten songs on this "full-length demo tape"
    including at least one that has appeared on other A.M. demos.
    
    The recording was done at NOT ENOUGH KNOBS studios by Ashley himself
    and it's pretty reasonable overall.  Ashley plays all instruments and
    does all vocals except for one song entitled "Spring Break", which was
    done by Gruppe B. Knife (a band of A.M's.) live somewhere in Fla, I
    think.
    
    The first song, "Welcome to Malibu" is a riot with Zappa-esque vocals
    and all.  There are several humorous (both lyrically and instrumen-
    tally) numbers and a few that are really "nice".

    My name is Tom Parmenter.  I'm a writer by trade and a music-lover by
    nature.  I have been married since 1962.  My wife is an enthusiastic
    four-hand classical player.  My number 1 son plays piano guitar and has 
    been in a couple of bands.  My daughter-in-law is a bass player and musical
    natural who also played in several bands.  Her brother once had the
    leading zydeco band in Vermont and is now playing in California.  My
    number-one son and daughter-in-law also take care of my grand-daughter
    for me.  My second son plays keyboards, including accordion and is
    currently playing in a Restoration (17th century) dance band and also a
    sort of modern "shoe"/drone band.  I am an amateur piano and drum
    thumper with more enthusiasm than skill.  I played drums, sang, and
    wrote songs in a band called Velocette back in the early 70s.  All of
    us, except my wife, have been disc jockeys (and she played Piglet in a
    radio production of Winnie the Pooh.)
    
    I was born in 1940 and the first piece of music I can recall was Stick
    McGhee's "Wine Spodee Odee" (ah there, John Franzosa) from, I guess,
    1950 or so.  I love the blues, honky-tonk country music, 50s r&b, soul
    music, 60s sounds -- Beatles, Stones, Kinks, Who, Moby Grape -- pub
    rock, punk rock, jumping jive, power pop (Buzzcocks to Shoes), retro-60s 
    stuff, garage music (Paul Revere & the Raiders), Tex-Mex, Kansas City
    jazz, bebop, mainstream jazz ala Fathead Newman or Tiny Grimes, Count
    Basie, Duke Ellington.  I like everybody in the Rock&Roll Hall o' Fame
    except Bobby Darin and the Doors.  I get a real kick out of listening
    to music, reading about it, writing about it, noting about it.  I have
    about 2500 LPs, 500 45s , 150 78s, 75 cassettes, and 250 CDs.  Current
    favorite radio program is Breakfast of Champions, which I don't get to
    hear but once a month or so.  Current top of the pops with me --
    Matthew Sweet, Teenage Fan Club, Judybats.
    
    Here comes that van again.  Good night and have a great weekend and a

    Who ever said your past never comes back to haunt you?
    
    I look back on all the notes with my name on them as a very fond
    memory. In "the Great Purge of '92" I became another faded ghost
    in the music conference.
    
    The path of life took me to Siemens Nixdorf where I worked in
    software development in multimedia. I found my way into a group
    that was producing a CD-ROM title called "Facts About Germany".
    I ended up doing music and audio production for the title as
    well as writing code, editing video, writing story screens
    and narrative, and all sorts of other things. It was a project
    that I really loved working on, and it also showed me for the
    first time exactly what I wanted to do with my life.
    
    So, since working on Facts About Germany, I've started a company
    which does interactive multimedia titles for CD-ROM and other
    media. But, as in all ventures, things tend to start slowly,
    so I've taken a software development contract in the video server
    group. I'll be around for a few months, anyway.
    
    I hope to start contributing soon. For now, I'm still getting the
    "lay of the land" and just wanted to say "hi".

professionals." Your departure came during one of my DEC contracts, and was

Well, as some of you already know, I've been tapped on the shoulder, and my
last day here at Digital is this Friday, June 17th. I've seen a lot of notes
lately being written by friends and fellow noters who are leaving, and I
debated whether I wanted to add another one to the pile, but it seemed
inappropriate to leave without saying goodbye.

Digital has been very good to me, and I leave with no hard feelings. I came
here 6 years ago through a temp agency as a fill-in secretary for a week,
and ended up staying on and being hired (and trained) as a software engineer. 
I'm lucky to be in the organization that I was, and to have the manager that 
I did. I wish Digital well in the future, both for the sake of the company 
itself and the surviving employees.

The toughest part about leaving will, of course, be the loss of everyday
contact with my co-workers - both within my group and throughout the company.

Via notesfiles, I've made countless friends; bought and sold more music items
than I care to think of; I've dated women that I've met over the net; found my
songwriting partner (hi Tom!), formed two DECjam bands, and found my current
band (See No Evil - which owes a large debt of gratitude to the DEC population 
for your constant support!); taken vacations across the country (and outside 
the country!) to visit fellow noters that I had never even met before - and 
was welcomed into their homes like a family member!; discovered the writing of
Dave Barry; founded and/or moderated the HEAVY_METAL, AFTER_HOURS, and
BOSTON_BRUINS notesfiles; and just basically enjoyed the discussions and
cameraderie of sharing ideas and knowledge on my various hobbies with others
in the Digital community.

Yes, I will hopefully be on the USENET soon (either from a new company or from
home), but it will not be the same. Hopefully some of us will remain in 
contact, and hopefully these friendships will not fall by the wayside just
from lack of everyday communication. I wish everyone the best in life, and
look forward to what's in store for me next (whatever that may be!).

    always seemed to be a very upbeat and personable guy. Best of luck in
    whatever you do... and good luck with your various musical projects.

    Alan, you've been one of the most interesting, fun and nicest people
    I've met thru this medium.  I'd also add that your parting note also
    demonstrates another one of your admirable attributes: class.
    
    We haven't met in person often enough (I'd say maybe 4 times at most)
    but you're definitely a "friend" in my book and will continue to be
    one.
    
    I want to end this on a positive note:  I truly think that "we'll all
    meet again".   No, not in "heaven",  I think only about 1/2 of us
    have any chance of getting there and Alan and I probably aren't among
    that half ;-).   Let me explain what I'm talking about.
    
    The information superhighway is really happening.  This weekend I sent
    mail to (and got a response from) Steve Morse (my musical idol). 
    
    I can already see that we're all going to meet on some big notesfile
    on the Internet.  Only this time, we'll have even more folks around
    (not just Deccies).    I really do believe that.
    
    So it's not "goodbye", but "see ya".

  I've been working on building an introductory music library for my kids
  (ages 9 & 11, intermittently learning instruments).

  Toward this end, I made up a list of interesting musicians to begin with,
  across Pop/Rock, R&B, Jazz, Country, Blues, Classical, etc.
  
  When I looked at the result, I found it read like a personal musical
  "ontology", probably as good an introduction to who I am, at least
  musically, as anything.  So, to provide the notes equivalent of rifling

    Well, Jay, while I'm a firm believer that no one person has "better"
    taste than another, I have to say that that little lot takes some
    beating! You certainly score top marks in terms of variety. There's not
    a name on the list that doesn't meet with my complete approval (with
    the exception of Franco & Rochereau, who I must confess to knowing
    nothing about...), and I can't think of any notable absentees either.
    
    Given that I host a radio programme about black music (blues, R&B,
    soul, gospel, doo-wop, cajun, etc.), I was particularly interested in
    those categories. Perhaps the only names in these genres that I might have 
    expected to see (and that are missing) are from the Tamla Motown stable
    (Isley Brothers, Martha Reeves & the Vandellas, Marvellettes, etc.) and
    one or two of the New Orleans crowd (Fats Domino, Larry Williams, Lee 
    Dorsey). Still, you've got to stop somewhere and it's a one helluva great 
    list all the same ;-)
     
    Your kids are going to have a whale of a time...have they started

  Right now my kids are into what their friends are into -- alternative rock
  and rap.  Which is fine by me -- I'm just trying to build under that, as
  it were.
  
  [BTW, that library is deliberately stodgy; if I tried to include my alt &
  rap favorites -- beyond the likes of Clash & Public Enemy -- I'd be
  infringing on their turf, and the whole idea would be at risk.]

  The best time for trying new things on them seems to be on long drives --
  the old captive audience factor.  They've thought the likes of Otis
  Redding and Hank Williams and Otis Rush were "OK", when they were able to
  focus in & out and absorb the music a little.
  
  Not that they don't still like to tell me to my face that all music before
  the 70s "sucks"...   Thanks for the comments.  - Jay

  P.S.  Franco & Rochereau are 2 superstars of African pop, listed together
        because I plan to introduce them with an album they did together,
        "Omano Wapi".  On Shanachie I think -- accessible, very highly
        recommended.  (In the Boston area, HMV Records has entire sections
        for each of these two guys, to give you an idea...)

    Pat Laramee signing in. I'm a contractor at DEC, back for another
    year. I like most types of music, especially rock and jazz. I'd have
    to say count me out on easy listening and rap.

    the address looks familiar. I play guitar myself and am a complete
    Hendrix junkie. I love (almost) all types of music and am looking

    just found this file recently and there's a lot of catching up to do!
    set seen helps but then you have to manually go back and find the other
    fun stuff you missed!  my name's dave but most of my friends call me
    "da ve" (pronounced dah'-vay)...  feel free to make up your own
    pronunciations... :^)  i do most of my recreational noting in GRATEFUL
    (yes, i'm another one of "them" among other things)...  i also play
    in Cross the Water doing a bunch of vocals, acoustic guitar and
    harmonica work...  in the work world, i live in HLO2 and do whatever
    needs doing in the MarComm group...
    
    musically i like a lot of different styles, butsome more than others...
    i tend towards acoustic stuff...  or anything with a cool groove...  i
    like a lot of jazz...  get bored with the blues after a while...  and
    from time to time you'll even hear the "old" stuff (from as newly old
    as Benny Goodman to as far back as Mozart and beyond) coming from my car
    windows as i tool down the road..
