9.0. "MUSIC-related Conferences" by WRKSYS::MARKEY (Grand Parade of Lifeless Packaging) Wed Oct 09 1991 17:04

This note is for MUSIC-related conferences.

If you write a note in here announcing a conference, please create
a pointer to that conference using SET NOTE/FILE=filespec and mention
that selecting keypad 7 will add that conference to your notebook.

Also, for this particular note please use a descriptive title like
"GUITAR conference" and not "Axe murderers unite!". Doing a DIRECTORY
of this note should provide you with a comprehensible list.

The purpose of this conference is discussion of aspects
of music creation which are covered (if at all) haphazardly
in other conferences, particularly writing, arranging, and
music theory. It is expressly *not* for the discussion
of musical instruments and other music-related equipment
(such as sequencers, amps, PA systems, recorders, etc.)
except in terms of how you use them as tools to write or
arrange music. Possible areas of discussion:

o Composition and songwriting (here's how I go about writing
a song, this is how Paul Simon writes, analysis of well-known
songwriters, how to write for video?...)

o Arranging (how to arrange for horn or string sections?)

o Music theory (what's the name of this chord? What are
	the modes?)

o Legal issues (such as copyrights)

Equipment ads are not allowed and will be deleted and returned
	to the author.

This reply is not about the fact that KP7 doesn't work (the note is not tagged
with a conference), but about the fact that I can't open the conference. I do:

Notes> ADD ENTRY VORTEX::BASLIN::MUSIC_MAKING

Notes> OPEN MUSIC_MAKING
Error opening VORTEX::BASLIN::NOTES$LIBRARY:MUSIC_MAKING.NOTE; as input

Is the fact that I'm running an old version of notes (V01.1) the cause of this
error?

    GUITAR noters:

I am posting this with the candid encouragement of Dave Hickernell.
Please be gentle or I might ask him to beat you up ;-)

I am just coming from the GUITAR conference. Dave told me that there
was something going on in there about Alan, so I checked it out.

You guys are a riot. Ruthless riot ;-) You guys know no mercy.

First of all, are there any females in there or is this just a boys
thing? When I was perusing through notes, I felt as if I was peeking
into the men's locker room. I thought you'd be very uncomfortable
if you knew a woman was present, I mean, you'd have to watch the
    language and all that ;-)
I didn't want to shock you guys by entering this note there.

The first thing the word "guitar" would remind me is classical guitar
such as Rodrigo or Albeniz. How come there are no such discussions?

Now, I have a question about strings, is it safe to ask it in GUITAR?
Or would you chauvinists ;-) prefer girls stayed out of your domain?

You can be brutally honest with me.

Well I'm safe, I'm hundreds of miles away in Baltimore. :-)

Actually, it can be embarrassing on several levels...those of use with
*good* taste are often embarrassed my the metal-heads. :-) Oh, oh,
I'm in trouble now...

Seriously, though, I know what you mean. It's mostly (but not all)
males in GUITAR, and it does often get, let's see, how to word it,
tasteless perhaps.

> The first thing the word "guitar" would remind me is classical guitar

Occasional discussion of classical guitar takes place, but the conference
tends to be dominated by rock people (see my mostly tongue-in-cheek comment
above).

> Now, I have a question about strings, is it safe to ask it in GUITAR?
> Or would you chauvinists ;-) prefer girls stayed out of your domain?

If you mean classical guitar strings, GUITAR would be as good a place as
any to ask. There's several classical guitar types that have shown their
faces in there in the past.

> You can be brutally honest with me.

Geez, Lale, if people can't behave, there's no reason for you too feel
bad if they're embarrassed by their own actions! Seriously, though
(did I say that twice in the same note?), while some tasteless stuff
goes on in GUITAR, it's pretty much always just meant in fun. In fact,
believe it or not, most of the discussion is really about guitars and
music!

    Lale,

For better or for worse, guitarnotes is predominantly a rock and roll
players notefile which often is little more than a discussion of
gadgetry rather than music -- not that there's anything wrong with that.
I guess females are just not as common among electric guitar players. I
for one sincerely welcome anyone with something to say. And furthermore,
women are always welcome where I come from.

That's true, but I assumed you'd post it to Guitar. Why dontcha?
Guitar overlaps a lot with Music, but not 100% either way.

>> Please be gentle or I might ask him to beat you up ;-)

>Well I'm safe, I'm hundreds of miles away in Baltimore. :-)

Trust me, Hal - you're safe anyway, unless I stumble into you
accidentally. Or unless you happen to hear me play. %^)

Lately the only female Guitar noter has been Justine Sullivan, who posts
too infrequently, and lately not at all. You don't even have to play or
own a guitar to participate in the ribbing that goes on in Guitar. So,
I expect to hear from both Lale and Lorna in KDX200::GUITAR shortly. I
know you were both at the recent DECjam, so you're entitled to critique
our playing, as well as our on-stage antics and general appearances. I
know you both can dish it out as well as take it, and frankly, as I
told Lale, Guitar can use the, uh, "testosterone dilution". Come on

Lale, let me have a go at this:
I have a problem with G strings. They tend to bust when they're
too tight. Any others with similar experiences? ;^)

But seriously, though, there's a lot of useful stuff to pick up
in the GUITAR notes file. And in the same way that _this_ conference
makes you buy boxed sets you can't afford, the GUITAR notes file
encourages you to buy all sorts of equipment you may not really need.
Or makes you feel miserable with the guitars and amps you've got.

In fact, the only notes conference that does _not_ make you
buy more of something, is probably MOIRA::NATURISM. ;^)

Lale mentioned how there's not much classical guitar talk in GUITAR. It
mostly happens in CLASSICAL_MUSIC, for anyone interested.

Any folks in here that read the COMMUSIC conference might want to know
that it has moved to KDX200::. A pointer was left in the old location,
but it's date is such that it won't show up in your unseen map.

Anybody know what's happened to the ELESYS::AUDIO conference?

For the past two weeks I've been getting "Remote node is not currently
reachable"

    	Try 30036::AUDIO

I haven't had a problem getting in, so the issue is with your
    	system and not ELESYS::.

The node database on HYLNDR is out of date. ELESYS is 29.340. Get your
system manager to update the node database, and in the mean time you can
use 30036::AUDIO as .48 suggests.

Thanks for the quick responses, folks!

Just tried 30036 and it worked like a charm.

I don't know why you couldn't get into it then, but the new address
has been working since yesterday afternoon. Worked fine for me a few
seconds ago.

KDX200's address has changed to 28.166. You need to have your DECnet database
updated to reflect this. In the meantime, you could use 28838::GUITAR
(28*1024 + 166).
