3639.0. "Nikon Photography Stores" by EVMS::PERCIVAL (OpenVMS Cluster Engineering) Thu Jan 30 1997 11:10

    HI everyone.

I've just arrived to live in New Hampshire - and need to find a good
photgraphy store. (I'm after some esoteric Nikon equipment). Can
    anyone recommend anywhere?

    Thanks,

I don't think you'll find anything esoteric in New Hampshire,
    photographic or otherwise... :-)

There is a Ritz Camera in the Pheasent Lane Mall and a camera store
downtown. They might order something for you if you know what
you want. Otherwise, I suspect you'll want to make a roadtrip to
Hunt's Photo and Video down in Melrose MA.

There's a pretty good store in downtown Nahsua (Main St); you might also try the
place in the plaza with Friendly's across from Geystone Plaza out on Rt101a in
Merrimack.

I'd stay away from Ritz; they're just a pricey mall store with standard
mass-market stuff. You can get better prices from Lechmere if that's what you
want.

Asking at either of the two palces I mentioned will get you references to other
places. The guy who runs the store downtown is very knowledgeable.

The store on Nashua's Main Street is called Cameraland, and they're
very good there - they also do repairs.

I like Cameraland, they do not do repairs there, the repairs are sent
out to a place up over the old down town Sears store.

This used to be a branch of Perfecta Camera. It is now being turned
(back) into a bank. You might try one of their other branches; but
you are not going to find 'esoteric' Nikon stuff in NH because Nikon
shafted its small 'local' dealers a few years ago by dividing its line
into 'consumer' and 'advanced' several years ago. Nikon decided that
you needed to have a certain *volume* to carry the 'advanced' line
rather than a certain level of knowledge in your sales force. So now
you have the large chain store sales droids pushing F4's and the local
dealers explaining the intricacies of N50's. Needless to say the
large chains will stock bodies but not the neato gidgets and the locals
can't stock anything so you are stuck ordering. And if you are
ordering you might as well go to Hunt's or mail order.

Perfecta is still in the same "mall", it was just moved across the
    parking lot.

The folks on Main St., Nashua (sorry, don't remember their name) seemed
to be the most knowledgable and helpful when I had a problem with a
Nikonos underwater camera. You may pay a few more dollars, but the
service is (well, was a couple of years ago) much better.

    Cheers

The camera store in Nashua downtown (Cameraland) just moved.

The new store is next door to the old one and is much larger (2-3 times
larger). They're just settling in so nothing is really set up (they
have to be out of the old place by the 1st).

They have a new color machine develop/print machine on order (old one
is still there as well). They will do black and white hand printing,
etc. They have an on-site photography studio in the new store. They
are a good source for Polaroid stuff (they supply Sanders, Digital,
State of NH, and a bunch of other places).

P.S. They're a really good place to get passport photos. Cheaper and
better than anywhere else ($8.50 vs $9.95). Make sure you say what you
want it for (passport, dive card, etc.) since they know what they're
doing and will adjust the image size as appropriate.

Does anyone know if there's a Wolfe (or "Wolfe" ???) camera store
    in the Nashua area?

They have what seems to be the best deal/arrangement for viewing
    your prints on the web.

I stopped by a store in the Atlanta area, but I can't seem to find
    any up here.

Harvard Camera in Harvard Mass has quite a bit of high end
equipment. Its only a 20 minute drive from south Nashua.

The store called Fotomart on Main St. Nashua went out of business (not
bankrupt the guy was moving on) a year ago in case anyone was thinking
"Weren't there two stores in Nashua?" Cameraland is just up the street
a block from the old Fotomart location. (There also used to be a
Perfecta branch down the street aways.)

You would have to go 80 mph to make this trip in 20 minutes. 30-40 minutes is
more like it.

Cameraland bought out Photomart. Go around behind of Cameraland and
you'll see a couple of temporary trailers full of Photomart's
merchandise. They are taking the time to inventory the stuff and
relabel it with new price tags.

Rivers Camera Shop may be able to help you. They can be reached in
Dover at 1-800-245-7983 and I believe they have other locations. I do
not think you will find a similar store in the Nashua area.

I tried the 1-800 number but it doesn't exist (at least in the Nashua
area). Are you sure thats the right number?

    Thanks,

1-800-NikonUS can tell you the names of authorized Nikon dealers in the
area, but Hunt is probably the closest place that might have a decent
    selection.

Whoops and thanks. The number in .14 was incorrect so I have deleted
that note and am reposting it here with the corrected number:

3639.18Camaraland updateDECC::SULLIVANJeff SullivanMon Mar 03 1997 21:3219
I went in there on Saturday. They are still doing a lot of remodeling and still
have lots of stuff to put out on the shelves, I was told. They do B&W developing
(don't know how good or how much), which is seomtimes hard to find. They also
have one of those Kodak do-it-yourself enlarger machines (from negatives). The
sizes range from 5x7 to 11x14, I think. The price was about $5-$10 per print.

I have a Minolta X-700 and am looking for a wide-angle lens. Probably a 28-70mm.
The older gentleman explained a lot to me and they had a Tamron lens for about
the price I've seen in mail-order ads. I asked if I could bring in my camera and
try it out, which he encouraged. I figure that even if it's a little more than
mail-order it would be worth it to buy from a real person you can talk to.

The guy told me that Camaraland has been in Nashua for 49 years, but at the
previous location.

I expect to go back often...
