948.0. "Is DFS going away? What is the replacement?" by GUIDUK::SOMER (Turgan Somer - SEO06 - DTN 548-6439) Thu Feb 27 1997 02:17

A customer of ours has just upgraded one of their Alpha machines to VMS7.1,
and in the process discovered problems installing DFS.

They were eventually able to install it, with the assistance of a fellow at
the Support Center, but they were told that "DFS appears to be going away".

Can someone tell us what DEC's plans are for replacing DFS, if in fact it
will not be supported in the future?

Thanks for any help.

948.1On OpenVMS, it's not DCE DFSSTAR::MORRISONWho is John Galt?Thu Feb 27 1997 02:378
I'm interested in hearing the answer to this one as well. Since we don't
have a DCE DFS product on OpenVMS, it looks like customers might be left
with no solution at all in this space (or at least, none from Digital) if
the statement in .0 is correct.

948.2V7.1 soon.MOVIES::BRANKINThu Feb 27 1997 12:538

A TIMA kit DECdfs V2.2-3 will be made available which will work on
OpenVMS V7.1.

It should have been out the door by now but we have it problems in
testing and might not be available for a few weeks still.

948.3alternatives to DECdfsMOVIES::BRANKINThu Feb 27 1997 12:587

I guess the alternatives to DECdfs are NFS and FTAM. I don't
have any experience of using either but I would guess that
they do not integrate with OpenVMS as well as DECdfs does, since
they are supposedly file system independent.

    Thanks for the replies. But, we still don't have a definitive answer
    regarding the future of DFS. Is there Product Manager we can contact
    to find out more ?

Any status on this? I have checked with our TIMA folks but they have no
record of it.  I
