204.0. "Dreams while pregnant" by MAJORS::MANDALINCI () Tue Jul 31 1990 14:58

Has anyone had any experiences of increased awareness to dreams while
    they were pregnant?

I'm pregnant with my second now and despite that fact that I'm in bed
enough hours, I am constantly dreaming and can vividly remember them
and never feel rested. I've only had only had one "awful" dream where
my son got hurt (he actually did later that day - call it intuition) but
no nightmares. I know I normally dream but usually only in the
early morning. Of course the medical books don't note this as a "side
effect" of pregnancy. I haven't seen it mentioned in any of my
reference books with the exception that some tribe of Indians didn't
believe you were pregnant until you had a dream about an egg (or
    something like that).

Any other pregnant dreamers out there???

I forgot about that--but yeah, when I was pregnant I had the strangest,
most bizarre dreams ever!

I also was much more affected by books & movies; I absolutely couldn't
watch anything violent or heart-wrenching. If I did by mistake, besides my
emotions being upside down, my dreams that night would be incredibly weird.

That is, of course, when I could sleep: pregnancy also brought my first
bouts with insomnia. A weird time--go to sleep and wake up feeling
completely displaced by the dreams, or on the other hand not being able to
sleep at all!

    Hi Andrea,

The only dreams I had was of having a beautiful little girl and I did
have a beautiful girl! I thought that was kinda nice and thought I'd
    share it.

BTW - I had no idea of the sex and it is my first.

    Good luck,
    Pam

204.3Lots of dreaming for me, too.FIVE5::MIKKOLATue Jul 31 1990 16:5622
    Hi Andrea,

I've got 10 weeks to go before my baby is due, and I've had lots
of weird dreams throughout my pregnancy. I've read this is quite
common. In the book "What to Expect When You're Expecting" there's
even a list of common pregnancy-type dreams, and what the dreams
mean you could be thinking/worrying about. Like you, I've been
    waking up feeling tired.

I think I also read that the dreams are probably caused by the hormonal
changes. This makes sense to me, as I also get weird dreams right
before my periods, another hormone-changing time.

One interesting dream I had - I dreamed I had a toddler boy (this
is our first child, so I wasn't dreaming about any we've already
got). In my dream I was calling the boy. I woke up and told my
husband that I really liked the name I dreamed I was calling this
boy. He liked it too, so if our baby is a boy, it will get the
    name I dreamed - Jeremy.

    Good luck, and pleasant dreams!

It is well established that virtually everyone spends considerable time
dreaming, but that few dreams make it beyond very-short-term memory,
and are thus forgotten on waking. It seems likely that physical and
hormonal changes in pregnancy would lead to more frequent waking, and
thus cause more remembering, rather than more dreaming. Of course,
dream content would also more likely focus on birth, children, and the
    like.

I've noticed that as birth gets closer (I now have 5 weeks to go) my
dreams have increased and they are more so about the baby. Of course I
never dream what the sex is or anything like that, but they revolve
somehow around the baby and it's birth. Very strange.

My doctor said that with the excitement and anticipation AND
nervousness about the baby and motherhood (i.e., will I be a good
mother, how will I know what to do, etc), it's very common that the
dreams become more and more prominent and even "weird".

I also have been reading the "What to Expect When You're Expecting"
Book and it's really great. If you get a chance borrow it or pick it
up. It's great for baby #1 but as a reminder when 2 and 3 come along
also. You always refer to it.

    Good luck.

    Hi Andrea,

I have a little less than a month to go now and my dreams have
become much more vivid and always revolve around labor and the baby.
In my latest I had taken my new born baby for a visit back to MA. to
see my mom. I put the baby down and forgot about him. The rest of
the dream was me looking for him in a state of panic and no one else
seemed worried or cared to help me find him. I was climbing up this
mountain and the earth gave away and I found caverns with lots of
children living in them. After a frantic and endless search of all
the caverns I found a stuffed animal I had for my baby in a corner
of an empty cave and through further exploration, found my baby.
He was all dirty but not hurt and I remember him looking up at me
and smiling. I woke up relieved and teary eyed that he was ok and it
was just a dream. Talk about a strange one!

Since I've been pregnant, I've had 2 dreams that we took the baby
out (of the womb) and got to know it for a while. Then towards the end
of the dream I would start to worry about how we would get it back in
so it could finish "cooking" ... but we always managed. None of the
babies had a sex, but last night it was twins!

I remember talking about a very strange dream I had while pregnant
back in V2... I delivered a 14 lb. very healthy male cat. All the
nurses were very happy, my OB was very proud and everyone acted like
it was a completely normal thing to give birth to a cat. Oh, and it
was called a baby - not a cat - in the dream. I can remember being
upset because my husband wasn't there for the birth and when he came
into the room I said, "Look honey. He looks just like the Cowboy!"
(our real-life cat). Anyway, I think it was a good omen because I
had a very easy delivery of a very healthy 7lb. 8oz. girl a month
or so later. This was one of many bizarre dreams that I had.

I can't really say that I have too many memorable dreams (nor did I the first
time around), but it seems that all of my friends dream about me and the baby.

I can't believe how many friends call me up ALL THE TIME to tell me their
latest dream. Recently a friend told me that my stomache got so huge they
had to slit it open for the remainder of the pregnancy, and my baby could
poke his head out - I carried it like a kangaroo. Lots of other bizzarre
dreams from friends.

The not-so-funny thing this time around is that ALL of my friends have dreamed
that I had a boy (we really want a girl)! I hope it's just a dream.......
(sonogram showed likely girl)

Sweet Dreams!

When I was pregnant I dreamed my husband was pregnant with (and
delivered) twins. I was *so* annoyed because he stole all my
thunder and he was so casual about the whole thing - "yeah, twins,
    big deal."

We ended up not having twins, by the way, and he ended up being
anything but casual about our son!

I remember having lots and lots of dreams. I kept a journal because
    they were so interesting.

I had three separate dreams in which my belly just "dissolved" and I
reached in and brought out the baby!

I was very hopeful all through my pregnancy that I'd have a girl -
but in my dreams there was never any sense of urgency to determine the
sex. As an afterthought, after I'd lifted the baby out (!) and made
sure it was OK otherwise, I'd check, and it was always a girl.

(My first prego-dream about the baby was nursing my newborn *kitten*!)

Anyway, Alexandra was born by caesarean section...

I didn't have many dreams while I was pregnant with Eric. But
I did have lots dreams in the first few months after Eric was
born. I think it has something to do with the stress of being
a new mom. Most of the dreams were similar. I remember for
several nights I dreamed about taking Eric out shopping and
losing him in the shopping mall. I asked people whether they
saw my baby and no one seemed to care. The worst thing was I
forgot about what he looks like. So when I went to the police,
I couldn't come up any descriptions. It was terrified. This
kind of dreams always waked me up. There were nights that I
have to check Eric serval times, just to make sure he is still
in his room. The dreams did go away.

Dreams of losing a child (especially your first) are pretty common....
    and normal!

I read a lot while pregnant, and so spent a lot of time at the library.
I remember a very vivid dream during my 9th month of pregnancy where I
delivered the baby, still completely dressed, while sitting at the
entrance to the library. When I told my husband, he forbade me going to
the library again til I had delivered.

And I was 2 weeks overdue.....

I had a dream when I was very pregnant that I had a baby boy with
blond hair and blue eyes and he spoke to me. He said, "hey what's with
you anyway, you've had me for over a week and haven't given me a bath
    yet."

I guess you could definitely call that a case of new mother jitters.
Besides the fact that the baby was a brown haired, brown eyed girl
(Looks just like her dad). I have blue eyes and was very blond until
    about 10.

I don't recall any of my dreams personally, but here's a real strange
one that my sister had that really "stuck". She dreamt that she had a
roll of film developed and in it was a group family portrait. Besides
she, her husband and several other family members was our father holding a
baby girl. Now just as explaination, my sister *did* in fact have a girl
several months later, but our father had died several months *before* my
    sister even became pregnant.

My sister actually had a roll of film in her camera at the time, but
refused to have it developed until *after* the baby was born, which by
the way was *Exactly* a year to the day after my father died, the
doctor told her they could tell it was overdue. She said something about
being supersticious(sp), or some wierd explaination of ghosts and spirits.
She always has been intrigued by the supernatural as a kid.

An interesting sidenote, my cousin's wife (My father's brother's son) had
her first child on the same date as my sister's daughter (2 weeks early)
and as I said is the same date as my father died, kind of wierd as I see it!

    This is all *so* true....

I've never been one to remember my dreams, but now, at nearly 8 months
pregnant, I am having the wierdest, most vivid dreams. It's like a
re-run of the day's events, all inter-mingled and confused. Nothing
awful, but like in the dream a colleague and a member of my family will
be talking about when the baby arrives, although it is impossible that
they could ever meet. Or a conversation I've heard is twisted around
and there seems to be no real meaning to it - strange!!

I must admit it's been quite fun, cos I tend to have flash-backs when
anything happens that I've dreamt of, and I might be in the middle of a
serious conversation and want to laugh at something I've just
    remembered!!

    Maybe I'm going nuts!!!!

I remember once in Psyche I learning that everybody always dreams.
Whether or not [and how vividly] dreams are remembered is another
    story...

Perhaps the fact that sleeping has become less and less natural [e.g.,
as you have a harder time trying to get comfortable towards the last
few months of pregnancy], combined with the fact that you are anxious,
excited and apprehensive about having a baby... cause the dreams to
    become more vivid and... "imaginative!"

Well, thank YOU Doctor Marcia! Sorry for getting boring with my reply.

It is really funny because I go to sleep thinking what will I dream
tonight. Most of my dreams involve my first child and me needing to
protect him (last night we were caught in a tidal storm at a Marriot
Resort in a state beginning with "Miss"). I'm usually with people
that are very unlikely combinations to be together as well. The
thing that bothers me is that, since I'm never really in a deep
sleep, I'm constantly waking up and never get to finish my dream.
I'm now working on training myself to get back into the same dream
because I hate to leave things unfinished.

This is going to be interesting to see how things progress through this
pregnany - only 5 more months left!!

I too had dreams during my pregnancy. I which I could say they were
as funny as the ones I've read here, but all mine where related to
birth defects. I went through my last month so terrified! When my
daughter was born I counted everything, 2 legs, 2 eyes ect... She is
beautiful! Ok, so I am her mom, _BUT_SHE_IS_ !!! ;-)

This reminded me of my nephew. When I was pregnant, my sister's 5 year
old showed ALOT of interest in me, he was always asking to feel the
baby and asked one question after another, one night our conversation
    went something like this:

Bryce:	Auntie M, when your baby comes out of your tummy it
    		will be naked won't it?

    Me: Yes it will.

Bryce:	Your baby is naked, cuz if it had clothes on it would
tickle your tummy and you won't be able to stop
    		laughing,huh!!??

Well...the latest dream I've had,(and I think the weirdest so far), was
just last night.... In this dream, the baby started to come out early,
"out of my belly button".....it was breathing and everything, and I
kept telling everyone to call the doctors, and no one would listen to
me. It was a boy. So, then as the baby is 1/2 way out of my belly,
somehow it changed to a cat!!!!!! And I thought to myself,
"oh no, I'll have to go through this all over again!" (being preggo)
    :-)

Once last week I had a dream that my husband came home, and got all
showered/shaved, dressed up etc, and a friend of his showed up, but he
wouldn't tell me where they were going. And I was all upset because he
wouldn't tell me...then finally after balwing my eyes out over and over
again.. someone finally told me that they were just going to a.....

Talk about weird dreams! And they are so vivid too.

About a week ago I had my first dream about my baby (due end of March)

I have felt ever since I knew I was pregnant that it would be a girl,
and in this dream it was. I went into labour at home, but a doctor was
there, and the only thing I remember was him saying, "Well here she
is..", no pain, no feeling, nothing! And the baby looking up at me was
about 2 years old with lovely curly dark-red hair and dark blue eyes.

After she was born, some people strted to chase me (it was like I was
on a weird sort of board game) and Morgan (the name we've decidede on
for a girl) was telling me what to do and showing me how to escape -
and she was right every time !

What do you make of that ? I thought it was really weird!

After reading all those dreams I was going through some flashbacks
myself. I had similar ones, actually almost exactly the same. The
one about having a kid through the belly button.
The one about having a kid that came out at age 2. and on and on..

Last night I had the most tiring and weird dream yet.
I dreampt that I was on vacation with my husband and friends and that
everyone was having a good time but I had to lie down (and miss the
party) because I was in labour. Well, this labour lasted about
3 days (the entire vacation) and still no baby.
I woke up this morning totally exhausted and worn out.
I guess it has to do with the anticipation the baby.

This morning as I was making sandwhiches I was so tired that I forgot
to put in the meat. Oh well.
