342.0. "Another bandaid P-L-E-A-S-E !!" by THEBUS::JENSEN () Tue Sep 18 1990 15:41

I'm beginning to wonder if "I" will survive Julianne's childhood --
as she'll probably survive it just fine!

I read Steve Resende (and other NOTERS) notefile on "childproofing"
your home. Well, it seems that no matter HOW WELL you childproof your
home (or the kid's environment), they will ALWAYS find the weak link in
    the process!

And ... JA will ALWAYS injure herself on "my shift", so the guilt over
the injury isn't enough ... now you have double-guilt yourself knowing
it occuring "right before your eyes"!

JA just turned a year and has managed to:

. loosen her front two teeth (fell forwards on the kitchen floor
while playing with the dog and a beach ball)
. burned her hand (touched the lawnmower muffler pipe AFTER
Dad put it in the garage!)
. stuck her finger in the bucket seat locking mechanism
. belly-surfed down three stairs (and wrapped herself around
    		the hurricane plant's pot)

NEVER once has she tried to test the things which ARE child-proofed!

I'm beginning to question if I have the minimally-necessary-skills-set
    to be a Mother!

    Another bandaid please!

Now DOTTIE -

Relax, take a deep breath, and go ask your mother and mother-in-law what you
and your husband got into at that age. You will probably find out that that's
where your mom got her first few gray hairs.

I have finally come to the conclusion that all I can do is laugh, and use the
criteria my mother set (a RN) for getting upset:
1) Have you bled and collected a pint of blood?
2) Is the bone sticking out?
3) Is there a 104 (or higher) termperature?

NO?? Good, we'll live!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

With both of my boys (one past it, one entering), I came to the conclusion that
what is the most terrible about twos is that they are really Tumbling Twos. My
boys would (Matt still does) trip over their own feet in the middle of a
carpeted room - and Cry for a half hour. It is amazing what ear plugs will do
(only joking)

Hang in there - and remember that their little bodies are very resilient for
a reason - they are kinda expected to get into scrapes.

Just remember, "when they're little, they have 'little' problems,
when they're 'big' they have big problems" 8-)
342.3Be glad it's band-aids!!MAJORS::MANDALINCIWed Sep 19 1990 08:1923
Another vote for hang in there - JA is completely normal.

Why should she play with something child-proofed? That wouldn't be any
fun. I think we must have kids to get gray hair - it's a rite of
passage for parents! Luckily, I'm blonde so they don't show.

I know my "standards" of what I would (and still will) let my son do
are very different from my husband's - mostly because if I'm watching
Berk I'm also attempting to do 20 other things at the same time. We
happen to have a pretty level headed kid even though he's only 2.5 now.
    Let's hope it sticks!!

At JA's age she is so excited to do new things. Even though they appear
dangerous to us, they are "fun" to her. Kids don't have fear - we
instill it as parents. So do hang in there - you can always make her
wear a helmet and hockey goalie padding around the house!!! Don't laugh
    - my neighbor did that for her son's knees because he was constantly
    skinning them!!!

Be glad it's only band-aids you're asking for.

Dottie:

I just had to laugh while reading your note. My almost-1-year-old is
also into everything ! I just try to remember that everything is so new and
exciting to them so they can't help themselves.

Yesterday, Cory pushed the stepstool over to the kitchen counter and
climbed up on it. He then grabbed hold of the counter and started swinging
his body side-to-side. Of course, he knocked the stepstool across the room
and then let go of the counter and landed on the floor with a loud thump. I
thought for sure it must have hurt but he wanted no part of Mom's cuddles -
he just wanted to stepstool back for another chance to climb !

Andrea & I were just talking about grey hairs this morning. I thought
mine were from age; come to think of it, I spotted the first one while I was
pregnant. Perhaps an omen 8-).
