124.0. "When it all falls into place!!" by MAJORS::MANDALINCI () Thu Jul 12 1990 14:54

I just wanted to comment that it feels SO GOOD when things click with
your children. This weekend we were at a barbeque at some folks we met
on a ski trip. These people are retired and run a ship-shape home,
including an immaculate yard. When we first got there, we showed Berk
(almost 2.5) that he had to take a big step over these flowers planted
very close to the step down off the patio in order not to crush them.
Every time he came near that step he made sure he stopped and took a
carefully placed step and the flowers were still standing when we left.
He also used all his "please and thanks you's" without encouragement
and politely asked for anything he wanted.

We were so proud of him. It was great to see all of our efforts
(parent's and child's) come together and not need to worry that he was
going to be thought of as an unruly/mis-behaved/ill-mannered little
boy. It's also very frightening to think that he really is growing up
so fast and turning into a little gentelman. He's into holding doors
    for Mommy now!!!

Congratulations to all parents who see their successes and here's to
many more for all of us!! It does feel very good to be so proud of your
children. It's the little success stories like this that make the
difficult moments of parenting fade so far away we forget them.

    Andrea:

Sounds like you and your husband have done a super great job raising
    your son!

Sometimes it can be so hard to stand firm and strong ... BUT if you
'hang in there', the long-term payoff is so much more rewarding!

    Congratulations!!!!

PS: Maybe I can send JA to Summer-Camp AT YOUR HOUSE! Sounds like
you son could teach JA a few things.

Andrea -

I'm so glad you entered this note. I too had that type of experience this
weekend, and I am just dying to brag about my boys.

With DECWORLD these weeks, thinks are a little crazy - meaning MOM had to
work all weekend (8-6 sat and 12-9 sun). Meanwhile, Dad had a massive bug,
and we passed in the hall as one came in and the other left. I was feeling
really bad that I wouldn't be able to see the Kennedy with Mike-3.5yrs
(with the BUG being found on Friday, hubby couldn't gaurantee that he'd be
able to pick Matty-17mo up at daycare on time).

Anyway, after Rick (hubby) came in at 5am Sunday morning after an allnight bug
hung, I decided to brave it and take BOTH boys to see the Kennedy. It would
give me a chance to have some individual attention with them, and give hubby
a chance to sleep.

So, up eary sunday morning, and on the road by 8am. I packed grapes, juice
boxes, match cars, coloring books, and two mini coffeecakes. We arrived at
the World Trade Center at 8:45, and I packed the boys in the stroller, and
off we went (Mom also got exercise!). We were in line for almost 3 full hours.
And my boys were ANGELS! They ran around the perimiter of the line where it
was feasible, coming to me whenever I called. There were some people in line
who were rude, and would step right ahead of us if I had to stop for a second
to put someone in/out of the stroller, but most people were fairly nice, About
halfway through, one woman (teresa) and here neice started talking to us, and
volunteered to stay with the stroller in line while I sat with the kids on
the grass, took Mike Potty, etc.

When we got to the ship, I had an older women (probably 50-60), walk back about
10 people to comment on how good my children were, and how proud of them I
should be. To say that I was beaming was mild. I was so thrilled to be
able to spend the time with them on a really neat adventure, and know that I
could do it anytime, and have them respond so nicely. They are SOOOOOOOOOOO
good.
