564.0. "Need wedding gift for remarrying oldsters" by EVETPU::FRIDAY (This space available for eminent domain) Thu Dec 13 1990 13:41

This note may be stretching the intent of this conference a bit, but
    I figured I'd try anyway.

My Dad is getting married on December 22nd. He's in his 80s, and his
fiancee is a few years older. They finally decided to get married
after going together for over 15 years.

We'd like to get them a wedding present, and have not a clue as to what
to do. They have everything they could possibly want. They just
    finished merging two complete households.

When we ask them what they'd like, they say to not get them anything,
as they have so much (and they really do).

So the kind of gift we're looking for is probably NOT something for the
house. It's perhaps some type of memento that they'd want to keep
out on view, or it could be doing something for them.

    Any suggestions?

How about a nicely framed photo of both of their pre-wedding families
... if folks could not get together to have the photo made, perhaps
a composite photo made up of individual photos of their extended
    families.

Or, hire a videotape person to go and take videotaping of members
of the two extended families to create a family videotape.

Or a gift certificate for a getaway at some B&B or inn?

How about an album of photos of all their kids, grandkids, etc.
at various stages of their lives?

How about tickets to a show or to the symphony if Boston is accessible
    to them?

We've made it a practice of matting and framing the wedding invitation
(sometimes it requires asking for an additional invitation either from the
couple or from someone else who gets one).

Besides all the mentioned ideas, how about dinner gift certificates
with maybe a limo/taxi service, maybe movie tickets, a weekend in New
York with theater tickets, anything to do with their kids and families
(remember they are merging 2 families as well - maybe one of those
collage frames). How about having a tree planted in their name
somewhere? How about getting them a star? Maybe a flower arrangement
or a fruit-basket delivered every month? Arrange for a family photo to
be taken at the wedding and have it framed for them.

    Congratulations to them!!!
