1164.0. "Different "form" of formula" by ICS::NELSONK () Tue Oct 08 1991 13:18

    I did a dir/tit=formula, but didn't really find what I was looking
    for, so here goes:

Did anyone's baby ever react differently/badly to using a
different "form" of formula? I usually use the Isomil liquid
concentrate for Holly (heavy to carry but big savings over the
ready-to-feed), but this time I couldn't find the liquid concentrate
and had to settle for the powder. I mixed it very carefully, told
my sitter to shake/stir it *very* well before feeding, but I wonder
if the different "form" could cause any problems. Thanx.

I went through this for a different reason, and as a result I believe
what my pedi told me - it doesn't make any difference.

My daughter abruptly started spitting up at about 8 weeks - and
continued until about 6 months of age, when it tapered off. I was using
Enfamil powder - rather thin compared to the ready mixed. I switched
to the ready mixed thinking that the heavier consistency would keep it
down, but it didn't make a bit of difference, as my pedi had told me.

Personally, I wouldn't worry about it.

I also had switched from the Enfamil ready mixed to the powder and my
daughter didn't have any reaction. She is now 6 months old and will
hopefully be switching to milk soon.

1164.3I liked powder formulaMIVC::MTAGTue Oct 08 1991 15:5311
Jackie was a spitter from birth to 8 months. It didn't matter whether
it was breast milk, water, or formula. I used Similac powder formula.
She seemed to spit up much more with the ready made. At around 7 or 8
months, I switched to Carnation (dr ok'd this). She did much better on
this formula. It mixed better than the Similac and she really liked
it. I think the ready made (not the concentate) was a bit heavy for
her and did't digest as well. Also, with her being a spitter, the
powder milk formula didn't stain like soy or ready made.

I switched William from Ready to Feed to Concentrate. He is a spitter
if he does not burp. The reason I switched is that is that Ready to
feed is a dollar more a can. All you have to do is boil water and
let it cool. I have heard the the powered formula is very watery, and
    doesn't mix well.
Is it time to make the bottles??

my son has been drinking powder formula, but every once in a while
i get the ready to feed or concentrate, depending what is on sale,
and he does not seem to mind. I do add a littl water to the ready
to serve, because it is heavier, but he has never had a reaction.

1164.6Maybe it's the water?16BITS::OLEARYWed Oct 09 1991 14:137
Ryanne wouldn't drink the powdered or the concentrate -- only the
redi-to-feed -- which wasn't too bad at first as it was a supplement
to breast milk. After she was weaned, however, it did get expensive.

The pharmacist suggested trying different waters to mix. I tried
boiling our water (well water), spring water and distilled water.
None worked for her, but maybe for somebody else?

All three of my children have used powdered formula and I've never
had any problems. I also don't have a problem with mixing it, as
long as you use *warm* water. Cold water and the powder don't mix!
Also, the powder doesn't stain as bad as the concentrate/ready_to_feed
    stuff.

My daughter currently uses Similac powdered formula. We
started her off on the Ready to Feed (RTF) only because
at 2:00am I didn't feel like mixing a bottle. We went to
concentrate for a little while but I didn't like having
to worry about the bottle staying warm/cold, etc. so we
switched to powdered...no problems at all.

However! One afternoon we were out and I didn't have any
bottles with me (not anticipating we'd be out that long)
so we just swung next door to the local supermarket and I
decided to get Carnation Follow-Up Formula. The label
indicated it was for infants 6-12 months who were eating
solid foods.... she spit up more with that particular
    	brand than Similac.

Her pedi said that 99% of the cow-milk based formulas
are the same but the consistency or flavoring may have
    	not agreed...

1164.9Reactions with Nursoy FormulaJUNCO::LROSSFri Oct 11 1991 14:5119

My son, Jeremy, is on Nursoy formula. He normally takes the
concentrate which I mix with boiled water. I went to powder since
my older son used Enfamil powder/concentrate/ready to feed with
no side affects from any. Jeremy ended up developing a nasty
diaper rash which turned into a yeast infection. I attributed it
to the powder formula which was causing him to have 2-3 times the
number of bowel movements (and very loose). As soon as I went
back to the concentrate his bowel movements were normal and I
was able to combat the rash. I did notice that both the poweder
and concentrate had the same amount of iron, but the powder said
something about having Corn Syrup Solids - the concentrate doesn't.
I think this difference contributed to the reaction. If the
ingredients were exactly the same, I would not have expected any
      bad reaction.
