797.0. "Baby curls>>>Adult curls?" by WFOV12::MOKRAY () Tue Mar 26 1991 18:17

If a child has curls at 18 months, do those curls stay? The
hairdresser says there's something called "baby curls" and if
we cut them, that's it. This may mean that Daniela NEVER will get a
haircut if true. I'm a curly-headed person, now proud of it, having
gone through everything one could do to make hair straight for years.
I'd love for Daniela to also have curly hair. As she's adopted, we
don't know if genetically she could be ending up with naturally curly
hair; it's just wishful thinking on my part that she will. If we don't
brush her hair at all after a bath, it curls over her head. If we
brush it, there are curls at the back and waves over the top. As it
gets longer, is slept on, or gets dirty, the curls diminish.

Do "baby curls" exist? Or is this another of those myths?

My sister's youngest had "baby curls". Once her hair was cut above
shoulder length, the curls were gone for good. My son has very wavy
hair and if his gets below neck length it will curl under and around to
    his ears.

My oldest son had 'baby curls'. As his hair grew longer it came in
straight. After I cut it at about 14 months it was straight.
Interestingly enouh his daughter now has curly hair. I wonder if
    it will also grow out.

My daughter, Jade, now 5, still has gorgeous curly hair. When she was
younger it appeared to be alot curlier but I guess that's got a lot
to do with the fact it was a lot shorter.

I to had problems deciding if & when to get it cut for the same reason-
I didn't want those curls to disappear. When I did eventually get
around to having it done, the hairdresser layered it slightly & the
result was more curls than ever!

Well whether or not you cut it, isn't gonna to change the fact that it
they will go away if they are "baby curls".

Your hair dosn't stay there forever. Eventually, all the curly hairs
will fall out to be replaced by straight ones. Cutting the hair just makes you
notice the straightness faster.

Bear in mind, sometimes it goes the other way too. My husband had
absolutely straight hair when he was a boy. around puberty , it became wavy.

Bottom line, short of giving her a permanent there is nothing you can
do to influence it. Cut it if you want to; don't if you don't.

My son Alexander had stright hair when he was born and at around 7
months while on vacation down the cape all of a sudden he had curly
hair and it has stayed that way ever since. He is know 16 months old
and has the most beautiful soft curly hair a person could ask for. My
hair dresser says this is due to the fact that my husband and I both
have naturally curly hair. So maybe Daniella's natural partens had
curly hair and you will be lucky enough to have a little girl with
curly hair. I know my mom used to love doing my hair when I was little
and I love to brush Alex's hair when he lets me cuase the curls are
    just so soft and silky.

My second son had wonderful curls when he was a toddler. When he'd
sweat, they would curl into little springs that I'd play with. :-)
I can remember his first "real" haircut at the barber, and the barber
said, "See all the curls? That's because his hair is so long."

That's the last I saw of his curls-- on the barber's floor. :-(

My daughter Hannah was a curly mop as a toddler. I was certain the
curls would be gone once she got a real haircut.

Thank goodness I was wrong. And as her hair grew, the curls grew into
banana curls (they swirl down her back).

I just had her hair cut yesterday--and now her hair is straight. The
hairdresser said as soon as her hair relaxes (probably with the 1st
wash), the curls will come back. I hope so!

Hannah will be 4 in June. She has my husbands hair.

I had a dermatologist tell me once that your skin and hair changes
completely every seven (7) years. Not all at once, but by the end of
the 7th year, you will have completely different skin and hair than you
had 7 years ago. I was only 15 at the time, and didn't think to ask
him why or how this occurred, so I don't know if it's even true or not.
With a large grain of salt...

I'm glad you entered this note because I have been worried about the
same thing! Chase is 17 months and I still have not taken him in for a
hair trim. I made an appointment once and then cancelled! I couldn't
bare seeing those beautiful blond curls cut off! I have trimmed his
bangs only twice and the sides once, but the whole back of his head is
all soft, silky blond curls!! I know I'll have to get them trimmed up
eventually, but I'm dreading it!!! Everyone always comments on his
hair - I pray the curls stay!!
797.10Cutting hair young is a recent customWORDY::STEINHARTPixillatedThu Apr 04 1991 12:0010
When my father was a child (born in 1920), his baby hair was not cut
until it had grown very long. That, and putting little boys in dresses
(like baptism gowns, but ankle length), was a common practice at the
turn of the century. Supposed to be very bad for a little boy's sexual
identity, but I guess that when it was very common, it wasn't so
damaging. I do know he was relieved to get it cut finally.

Remember the sixties when very long hair was stylish for men?

Wait a minute....AJ was baptized in a gown, and over coat set, I chose
it and thought it looked beautiful! And oh yes he HAD curls then too!
In fact one person compared him to the kid on the Pampers box, I often
compared him to the boy (oh what's that series name???) with Buffy and
Jodi. He had the same blond curly hair.

My hair is extremely kinky, fuzzy curly, his dad's hair is thick and
wavey. As of now it looks like he's going to have dad's hair, which I
consider fortunate for him. I've never like a man with real curly
hair, and for what it's worth I still can't seem to accept the fact
that so many men are getting perms!!

    Just a late day opinion!!
