1288.0. "A nipping nurser" by VERGA::STEWART (Caryn....Perspective is Everything!) Mon Jan 27 1992 15:24

My 6-month-old has recently begun testing out his two new teeth - on me!

When we nurse, he will now end up nipping me, and I think most anyone can
imagine the discomfort, to put it gently.

When he nips, I stop him from nursing (after the initial shock wears off)
and say "OUCH! - NO BITING!". I'm sure the words mean as much as
"$@*! - )&$&*@ &(^%#@%*&!, but the tone is pretty stern. He just looks at
me for a moment, then smiles and sometimes even giggles a bit.

It's hard to not laugh myself when he smiles, but honestly, this has to
stop. I don't want to stop nursing yet, but I'm afraid he's gonna draw
blood here pretty soon (those suckers are SHARP!).

Any suggestions????!

Thanx

~Caryn

    Caryn, I've read a couple articles and what they said (might have been
    Parents magazine at least) it to do exactly what you are currently
    doing. You might, however, limit what you say to one syllable phrases
    like "NO! Hurt Mommy" (at least I think that's what I remember the
    article saying)

    Is he doing it because he's anxious to get to the milk, or is he doing
    it when he's had enough and wan't to play? Can you translate his
    actions? I'd say if he's not doing it to be (well for lack of a better
    word) malicious, then it may just be an accident caused by him being in
    a hurry to nurse. In that case maybe I'd just ignore it, if you can,
    and see if it stops by itself.

1288.2not intentional from what I can tellVERGA::STEWARTCaryn....Perspective is Everything!Mon Jan 27 1992 17:326
Thanx, Lyn. In answer to your question, he's not doing it intentionally,
and he doesn't seem in any particular hurry - often it's when he's dozing
off, or just "munching" right along at his usual relaxed pace.

    Occasionally Alex would clamp down on me and then wiggle her jaw side-
    to-side (aarrggh!) without loosening her grip, so it wasn't really
    nipping but more like a continued pinch. I gave her a tap on the
    noggin (don't worry, I stayed away from the fontanel & "seams") while
    saying "NO!" sharply--kind of like a rolled-up-newspaper for a puppy.
    That always startled her enough to detatch and frown up at my own frown
    (it *is* hard to keep a straight face!), but it didn't hurt her, and it
    worked. I think, too, that she only did that nonsense when she was
    full and just wanted to play; I don't remember if she ever persisted
    after the tap, but if she did, I'm sure I would have declared the
    nursing session OVER.

1288.4sleep related movements?MCIS5::TRIPPMon Jan 27 1992 18:119
    Interesting point, Caryn, when AJ was an infant and just nodding off,
    he would sort of make a jerky sort of movement. I wonder if that could
    be what's happening. Sounds more like something involuntary.

    It actually didn't alarm me at all, since hubby says that I too do this
    frequently when dozing off. Sort of a signal that I'm just very over
    tired.
