1274.0. "No Red Blood Cells Scare" by MR4DEC::DSULLIVAN () Wed Jan 08 1992 10:49

Hi, I'm wondering if anyone has ever heard of this or do you know
anyone it has happened to. When I took my son for his 6 month checkup
for his shots, etc. the doctor noticed that he looked pale. He
requested that the lab take a blood test and come to find out, his red
blood count was drastically low...so low...that he sent me to a
pediatric hemotologist at Mass General. Of, course, I never expected
to be heading there. I was so nervous. Well anyway......the
specialist decided to do a bone marrow test to see what may be causing
his marrow not to be producing red blood cells. (The only thing I
could think of it that he is checking for leukemia, etc) The results
came back good except there was no sign of new red blood cells being
    made.

The next day we had to go back for them to do a blood transfusion so
his levels would be back to normal. I had to go back weekly for blood
work to see if his red count had risen. The first
    week....nothing....the second week.....3.4%....ya!!!...the third
week....8.6%...the doctor thinks that whatever he had was just a virus
that stopped him from producing his own cell. Now his bone marrow is
    doing the job.

His coloring is much better. Red cheeks, etc. What a horrible month
of December I had. Worry after worry.

I'm wondering has anyone heard of this before. As I tell people about
it, someone always seems to say...Gees...I know someone that happened
    to.

Donna, I haven't heard of this but I do have a 5 month old son (who is
having some problems) so I can just imagine what you've gone through.

I'm so glad to hear things are better now!

Wow....bravo to you and your pedi for catching it early enough to be treated.
I know what you mean about December 1991...it wasn't the greatest holiday season
for us, either. 1992 just HAS to be better than 1991!
