1251.0. "Red Circle on Forehead?" by TRACTR::MAZUR () Fri Dec 13 1991 13:52

    Hello Parents!

    	I feel kind of silly writing about this, but you never
    know--someone may have heard of it!

    	My sixteen month old daughter has a 2 - 2 1/2 inch
    red circle on her forehead! I don't believe it is swollen
    although my mom says it looks like it is to her. As far
    as I know she has not banged her forehead recently--my
    husband is home with her during the day, so I checked with
    him. The spot is very warm to the touch at times --sometimes
    it's darker than other times. It has been there for about
    2 weeks or so.

    	I called the pedi today and they want to see her (partly
    because she had her MMR 3 weeks ago). Alexa has no other
    spots anywhere else.

    	Has anybody ever heard of this?

    Thanks in advance,

    Sheryl

    Was the circle of slightly raised dots ? One of our daughters
    had something that looked like this on her leg and it was ringworm.

1251.2Nope no raised dotsTRACTR::MAZURFri Dec 13 1991 14:039
    Hi Stuart,

    	Nope, no raised dots--it looks more like your skin looks
    when you get flushed for some reason.

    Does that sound familar?

   She hasn't been playing with any toys that have suction cups has
   she? Not sure how long that would last, but I know we've seen red
   circles like that resulting from having a suction cup toy stuck to
   your forehead  (aren't siblings fun!!)...

   Just a thought..

1251.4No, but good suggestion!TRACTR::MAZURFri Dec 13 1991 15:5212
    Thanks for your thought, Tom, but she has no siblings, doesn't go
    to daycare and doesn't have any suction toys.

    She does have a knit hat that she pulls down over her forehead
    alot lately--I wonder if it's an allergy.

    My appointment with my pedi is at 3:00 today--I'll write
    the diagnosis on Monday!

    Thanks for the suggestions so far!

1251.5Maybe the start of uncommon rash??WONDER::MAKRIANISPattyFri Dec 13 1991 16:0010

    Since it's been there for two weeks, that probably discounts this, but
    when I was about 10 I had an uncommon type of rash. I had one big round
    red spot on the back of my calf and then a regular rash in other
    places. I remember going to the doctor's and being stripped to my
    panties and having all the student nurses and med students coming in to
    check me out since it was so uncommon a rash. I forget what it's
    called.

    About the spot appearing on the head.

    It may just be a birthmark. Just because they are called birthmarks
    it doesn't mean they only come at birth. My birthmark appeared when
    I was in my teens.

    Could she be leaning on something warm with her forehead? (just
    a wild guess)

    I vote for a reaction of some sort - since the area is warm.
    This could be something she is ingesting or something she is in
    contact with, or even as Bonnie suggested, a bite of some sort
    (although you can usually spot a mid-point where the bit actually
    occurred)

    Remember however. we're not the doctors, these are only suggestions.

    Does it seem to bother her?

1251.9A note from the base-noterTRACTR::MAZURMon Dec 16 1991 11:5918
    Hi Gang,

    	Well, we went to the Pedi's on Friday and learned that the
    round red area on Alexa's forehead is a slight case of eczema (sp?).
    I guess she has a little on her ears too which leads us to believe
    it is from her hat or shampoo--we're leaning more toward the hat.

    	I never knew that eczema changes colors but it gets lighter and
    darker red with changes in activity or temperature.

    	Anyway, it's nothing to worry about ...the doc gave me some
    cream and told me to switch shampoos and discontinue the use of
    the hat! Poor Alexa--it's her favorite hat!

    Thanks for all of your ideas!

     Tom!! That made me laugh because a couple of years ago my 10 year old
    had a red spot on her forehead. Neither my wife nor I could figure it
    out. My mother saw it that evening and she didn't have a clue either.
    My daughter then said maybe she's allergic to rubber. When asked why,
    she said that while playing with a friends baby at our house that day,
    she stuck a toy with a rubber suction cup to her forehead! Well, we
    all burst out laughing!! She gave herself a hickey!!!! :^)

    Too bad I haven't been in this conference up to now. I would have told
    you that it was excema (not that you shouldn't have seen a dr. anyway).
    I had a couple of those red dots on my forehead when I was younger.
    BTW, excema is not "caused" by the hat or the shampoo. I still have
    bouts with excema once in awhile, especially around my ankles. I
    believe it's a blood disorder rather than an allergy.

Actually, I just took Elise to the doctor and she had a round red spot diagnosed
as eczema.

He said there are several possible reasons she got it. The most common is
milk allergy, which we could rule out easily. Another strong possibility, the
most likely one in our case, is dryness. Our house becomes very dry in the
winter.

I believe the shampoo *could* cause the eczema, if the person is allergic to
some ingredient.

    What medicine, if any, was prescribed?

    My son (4) has had a persistent spot of eczema all winter and the
    dr. just prescribed 1% cortisone ointment (which is not available
    over the counter, although the cream version is). He says five
    days of this should do the trick.

    Last winter's version just went away by itself (I think we used
    .5% Cortaid every night and morning) but this year's is worse.
