1230.0. "Where to cut your own tree" by MCIS5::TRIPP () Tue Dec 03 1991 11:27

    I am looking for suggestions on where to cut our own Christmas Tree.
    We live in South west Worcester County, near the Thompson CT line and
    do own a pickup truck to bring it home.

    Locations, directions and prices would be helpful.

    I have also added this to the Massachusetts Notes, but not much
    response there, unfortunately.

    For what it's worth I found what would seem to be the Ultimate in home
    Delivery....a garden Shop in Webster has from 6 to 16 foot trees at
    "resonable Prices", you call them, specify what height you want and
    THEY delivery to your home! Nice idea, but I thought half the fun was
    picking out the perfect tree! (I'll post the info here if anyone is
    interested)

1230.1Scotch Pine Farm in Pepperell, Ma.HPSPWR::HPSPWR::RENEno static at all..Tue Dec 03 1991 14:1515
    Lyn,

            Scotch Pine Farm in Pepperell, MA is exactly what you're
    looking for. I'm just not sure if you want to drive that far. It's very
    close to Nashua NH. I know the family that runs the farm and they have
    nearly 5,000 trees. Their forte is the Scotch Pine. They also have
    firs, spruces too. You get there, park your car, pick up a saw and head
    out to the 10+ rolling acres. It's really a nice place. The owner
    personally shears every tree each year (during the summer) to ensure
    a perfectly shaped tree. They also have a Scottish tea shop and gift
    shop.

    	Hope this helps!

1230.2FARMERS DAUGHTERIRONIC::BRINDISITue Dec 03 1991 14:1718
    Farmers Daughter which is in Auburn/Millbury, off rte 20. If you are
    coming 20 East take a right onto McCracken Rd (I think this is the
    name). Actually, if you know how to get to the Auburn Mall (the left
    off rte 20 at the set of lights) well... you take a right at that set
    of lights instead. At any rate, I would suggest calling them to see if
    you needed to "tag" your tree and at the same time get the name of the
    street!

    Sorry I don't have better directions, but I'm terrible with street
    names. BTW, this place is great... they have hot cider, a beautiful
    christmas shop that sells ornaments, etc... and the man that runs it is
    a peach.

    We get our tree there every year (we don't cut it down though) and his
    prices are very reasonable and the tree has never dried out on us.

    Good luck!

1230.3In Harvard, MA ...MR4DEC::DERAMOTue Dec 03 1991 14:4510
    There are two cut-your-own-tree places on East End Road in Harvard MA.
    East End Road is off Route 117, just two miles east of Rt 495. If
    you're coming from 495, East End Road is the first left after Bolton
    Springs Orchard.

    I don't know the names of the tree farms. They're practically next door
    to each other, about 1.5 miles in from Rt 117. Last year, one farm had
    a limited selection of blue spruce. The other farm had many hundreds of
    regular spruce trees. We got ours at this farm. All trees were $25.

1230.4Amato farms in Upton Ma.KUZZY::KOCZWARATue Dec 03 1991 14:5213
    Amato Farms in Upton, Ma. on the Hopkinton line right off Rte 495 is
    advertising cut your own tree. Unfortunately, Hubby is not into
    cutting your own tree.

    From Rte 495 take to Upton Main St. exit. Go approximately 1 to
    2 miles at the top of the hill take a left at the Water tower. Amato
    Farms is on the right about a 1/2 mile down the road. There are
    signs along the way.

    Happy Tree Cutting,

    Lynn,

    Another place a bit closer to you is Pell Farm in Grafton.
    It is right off of Rt 140...I can get you better directions
    if you decide to go there.

    All trees are $37. They had a nice selection when we went 2 weeks
    ago to tag our tree. We'll be cutting ours down on Saturday.

1230.7Great fun is cold and muddy!!!GOZOLI::BERTINOWed Dec 04 1991 14:458
We go to Pell Tree Farm in Grafton as well.

Here's a word of advice that I seem to forget each year until it's too late.

Wear your boot and jeans!! I always end up with mud up to my ankles before I
remember!

Last year we went to Maki Tree Farm in Sutton and enjoyed the whole experience.
My wife was 7 months pregnant and it was a riot, riding on the wagon, tromping
through the mud, warming up with free hot cider.

They are a little hard to get to as they're off in the sticks but not impossible
If you live in the Webster/Douglas area then I-395N to Sutton Ave exit, take a
right on Central Tpke towards Sutton. Follow Central Tpke about 2 1.2 miles and
take a left on Century Farm Road. Go about 2 miles and you should see signs for
Maki on your left. If you get to Lake Singletary you went too far.

    I just called since I live in Oxford also. They are called Star of the
    East, the owners are Robert Maki and his wife. So look for signs for
    Star of the East.

    They are open 7 days a week 9-5. $30 for 6 ft and under, $35 for over
    6 ft.

1230.11Riley Farms in Milford, NHXCUSME::BARRYMon Dec 09 1991 16:589
    If you live in New Hampshire, try RILEY FARMS in Milford, NH. They
    have Acres and Acres of beautiful trees and all are $30. We got a
    7+ footer this weekend. You can buy food, crafts, santa is there,
    and they have a tractor pulling a flatbed so if you want a ride back
    after you get your tree, you can.

    This is a nice place.

1230.12Lahti Tree Farm - Lunenberg, MATLE::FINANShe can wade in a drop of dewThu Dec 12 1991 20:249
    Off Rt 13 in Lunenberg, Mass is Lahti tree farm. There are
    signs from 13 to get there. You can cut one down or but
    one that has already been cut. Lots of trees, reasonable
    prices.

    Robyn

    P.S. There's also a way to get there from 119 in Townsend -
    again I think you can just "follow the signs"
1230.13A less expensive alternative ...MR4DEC::DERAMOWed Dec 18 1991 00:2815
    I had posted reply .3 to this note about a cut-your-own-tree place in
    Harvard. Last year their trees were $25; this year they are $35. We
    decided not to spend that much.

    On my way home from work tonight I found a good price on already cut
    trees -- $10 to $18. The place: Walnut Street Auto Body, just across
    the street from the Mill in Maynard. The owner said he will be getting
    trees in daily this week. He had balsam, scotch pine, and douglas fir.
    We got a beautiful douglas fir -- very full, nicely shaped, and still
    fresh -- for $18.

    If you haven't picked up a tree yet and you're convenient to Maynard,
    this is worth checking out. You might want to call first to see what the
    selection is: 897-8752.

1230.14It was precut, from Webster MAMCIS5::TRIPPWed Dec 18 1991 10:4821
    Just to tie this one up, (no pun intended) we found a precut tree over
    the weekend. Since we didn't think AJ was up for a long trek through
    the trees only a couple days after surgery. I did check out the place
    on Sutton Av, Oxford/Sutton Line. Their trees were $20 and 30, and
    looked nice, but the weather over the weekend wasn't. We ended up at a
    place we had gone to the first year we moved to Oxford. The Webster
    Nursery which is on Route 12 at rte 16 across from Cranston Print Works
    has their own source for trees. This year they cut from Woodstock CT,
    which is just a couple miles down the road. Next year they will be
    cutting from their own farm in Charlton, MA. They told me this tree
    had been cut the previous Tuesday, the first year we used them it had
    been cut that morning. We paid $25, which is about average. Some were
    higher and lower. It is perfect, nice, moist and green. Maybe it
    wasn't as much fun as cutting it ourselves, but the tree is fresh and
    the people there were nice. Their wreaths are also reasonable, and
    freshly made daily, most under $10 decorated.

    Thanks to everyone for the suggestions, next year for sure we'll tag
    and cut early!

    Lyn
