1123.0. "WHAT ARE THESE WELTS ?" by DONVAN::MUISE () Wed Sep 04 1991 11:41

    The past two mornings my baby has woken up with several large red
    bites around her ear, neck, cheek. They don't seem to bother her
    but they bother me!

    She had maybe 5 yesterday morning, and maybe 2 or 3 more this morning.
    The originals are just as prominant and red as yesterday. I would
    rule out mosquito or black fly bites as they do not seem to itch her
    at all.  Any ideas?

    Thanks,
    Jacki

1123.1some thoughts.....JAWS::TRIPPWed Sep 04 1991 11:5721
    A couple thoughts on this, first is it on the side which is touching
    the pillow or linen, could possibly be a reaction to a new soap, new
    sheets, or if she's drooling could be a reaction of the saliva against
    the skin for a period of time.

    Second, could it be either fleas from an animal or sand fleas, which
    can come not only from sandbox, but with dry ground they breed there,
    or worse could an animal in the house have left some fleas in her room
    that have gotten into the bedding? Or I have noticed lately these tiny
    knat(sp?) type things that literally can fly through the window
    screens, they may have the cability to bite.

    Could it be a localized allergy? In by my and my son's case, if we eat
    too much citrus, oranges specifically, we both break out with a strange
    pinpoint rash around the mouth.

    Realistically though I'd opt that's it's environmental. There are
    specialists out there who deal only in pedi dermatology, try contacting
    one.

1123.2Sleep tight, don't let the bedbug bite...A1VAX::DISMUKEWed Sep 04 1991 12:1010
    How do you know they don't itch? My husband and I get them which leads
    me to believe we have a "bedbug". I think it may be a spider or
    something, I really don't know. I do know it isn't mosquito. I never
    hear them. Anyway - I know it comes from our bed because my youngest
    (who likes to go to sleep in our bed before we do) has them, too. The
    other son hasn't been in our bed in awhile - he has no bites! Needless
    to say, I change the sheets and blankets often so I think it's a night
    visitor and not a live-in. YUCK!!

1123.3still could be mosquitos...TENVAX::MIDTTUNLisa Midttun,285-3450,NIO/N4,Pole H14-15Wed Sep 04 1991 12:229
    I wouldn't necessarily rule out mosquito bites. My daughter woke up
    with about 5 small welts (mosquito bite size) on the back of her head
    one morning. They didn't seem to bother her at all. I found out that
    the screen in her room was slightly loose...once that was fixed, no
    more bites. So, I expected that they were, in fact, mosquito bites.
    Maybe they did itch, maybe they didn't. Could be they were too
    inaccessible for her to scratch or maybe she just doesn't know how
    (she's only 8 months old). Who knows? If they're on the large side, it
    also could be spider bites (in my experience, they're larger welts).
1123.4Fleas??JAWS::TRIPPWed Sep 04 1991 14:3310
    From personal experience, my parents had a case of fleas IN the
    mattress. From the advise of an exterminator, get rid of the mattress
    POST HASTE!!

    If it is, in fact fleas there is no other solution, but to get rid of
    the mattress (and pillows possibly) before it spreads to the carpeting!

    By the way, we had an indoor only cat, we still never figured out where
    the fleas came from!!

    Mosquito bites almost never make me itch, and the mosquitos have been
    very bad at our end of town the last two or three days.
