972.0. "RUBELLA during pregnancy" by USAT02::HERNDONK () Tue Jun 18 1991 13:07

I just had my first blood tests and it turns out I am not
vaccinated against Rubella (German Measles). I am 9 weeks
    along now.

I was wondering if anyone else found this out while pregnant.
    (I'm real nervous.)

My OB told me to stay away from small children especially
during my first trimester. (I guess no more pool!)

Rubella can cause heart defects, retardation and hearing loss.

I guess I'm one of those women that was vaccinated before
1 year and its not working now.

So, has anyone else gone through this 'panic' and survived
successfully ??? Is it really safe after the first trimester.

My OB said, since I do not work with kids, the risk is real
    low....

    Thanks for any support...Kristen

Kristen, I didn't have this problem but my mom did when she was
pregnant with my older brother. She was exposed and caught german
measels from a friend of her's son. He OB out in Calif. (where we
lived at the time) gave her a shot and she was fine and my brother was
born just fine. The only problem he has is a slight heart mermer.

But take your OB's advice and stay away from small children cause there
is a case of measels going around.

    Take care and good luck

    Kristen,

I too found out that I did not have any immunity to rubella when I was
about 8 weeks pregnant. I received the same instructions as you did.
I did not have any problems and I did stay away from small children.

My daughter is scheduled to have her MMR (at 15 months) in August. I
have to receive the vaccination within 24 hours of her having her shot
or I may infect her or may be infected by her. My OB told me that I
should have had the vaccination while in the hospital after I had given
birth. I guess I would make sure that you stay away from anyone who
has just had an MMR shot.

I also need to have a pregnancy blood test done the day before I
get the shot and to make sure that I don't get pregnant for at least 4
    months after the shot.

I was also told that I would probably get sick after the shot.
Actually we both would have a very sore limb (wherever the injection is
given), get a fever, and generally feel pretty bad for a couple of
days. The doctor said that I would probably feel much worse than my
    daughter.

After I had found out that I had no immunity, I checked my immunization
records and found out that I had been vaccinated. My OB said that many
times the vaccination didn't take. Today they give multiple MMR shots
over time so the chances of that happening to our children is probably
    slim.

Also, the rubella vaccination is must more costly than the MMR
vaccination. Our insurance requires that you receive the MMR instead
    of the rubella shot.

This might be a little more than you wanted to know, but...

    Hope this helps!

    Kristen,

My first blood tests also showed I was not immunized for Rubella.
My doctor did ask me if I was around children a lot, such as a
Day Care setting. I was concerned but he reassured me that the
chances were slim to none in contracting the disease. It all boils
down to the severe risk in giving you the vacine during the pregnancy.
There is too much risk in doing so. My Doctor was completely
against it. Try not to worry. When your healthy baby is born,
    then you can get vacinated.

    Best Wishes!

972.4< I have been there and survived >GANTRY::CHEPURIPam ChepuriTue Jun 18 1991 15:3360

    Kristen,

I have survived two pregnancies without Rubella immunity. Both my
children (aged 3 yrs and 1 yr) are fine. But, I did live with a
nagging fear at the back of my mind. With the first pregnancy,
I was not immunised because of ignorance on my part. I learnt about
Rubella from the OB when they did the bloodwork on me during pregnancy.
They said that they would immunise me at the hospital after the
delivery. I did get a shot after the delivery, I thought it
was the Rubella, but it was apparently a shot to speed up the
contracting of the uterus - it did not seem to be contracting too well
on its own. Anyway, I was not immunised and I did not realise it.

When it was time for my firstborn to get her MMR shot (Measles. Mumps and
Rubella) at 15 months, I knew that I might be about 2 weeks pregnant
(wasn't sure, but we had been trying). Just to be on the safe side,
I decided to call my OB to enquire about my Rubella status. What
a shock!! I was very angry at the OB too. We postponed my daughter's
MMR shot and I went into panic mode. More panic than the first time
because my child was now an additional risk to me (children are great
    "carriers" !!)

From a practical perspective, this is what I did:
(some things may sound a little paranoid, but I decided to take
    paranoia over risk !!)

    1. Never went to the pediatrician's office - my husband went.

    2. Avoided shopping areas - malls, grocery stores etc. This had
some added benefits - spent less money and passed on the
responsibility for grocery shopping to my husband - he still does
       this !!

    3. Avoided public recreation areas.

    4. Told all my friends and colleagues to warn me if their children
were getting the MMR shot. In general, kept away from sick
children (except my child, of course !!)

    5. Kept away from daycare situations for my daughter - fortunately, I
had grandmother care for her in my house, so that was one BIG
factor out of the way. In the OB's opinion, this was the biggest
       risk.

    6. Prayed a lot.

    7. Prayed a lot.

I hope this helps you some. Yes, life was a little restrictive. But
I did not mind the restrictions too much. I understand your state of
mind and I wish you all the best.

    RE: .0

You might consider getting re-tested. My first blood test too showed
that I was without Rubella immunity, but since I had fairly recently had a
booster shot my OB said "let's take another one, the lab might have
made a mistake." Sure, enough the next one came back showing I *did*
    have the immunity.

    Kristen,
I was told I was not immune at 8 weeks, we were going thru
a measle epidemic at the time, so needless to say, I did all shopping
at off hours, no weekends and also stayed away from areas normally
    populated by children.
Other than the inconvenience of having to make sure that I
did my shopping either in the early morning or late evening, it wasn't
all that bad. The day after Shayne was born I received my immunization
    shot.
Just follow your doctor's orders and don't worry too much,
you don't need that extra stress.

    re. 5

I was tested twice....the first time was when I went to my GYN
to tell her we are planning to have children and is there anything
I need to do. She had me tested for Rubella but when the tests
came back, they were unclear and I should re-test. Needless to
say, by that time I was already pregnant...guess 'it' was
happening while I was having my pap....who'd it thought it would
    work the first time ???

I just found out my hubby isn't vaccinated either...that's ok I
guess but he's a paramedic so the likelihood of him contracting
it and giving it to me is pretty good....I am waiting to hear
from the Doc to figure out what we should do.....(WHY DON'T
THEY TELL YOU THIS STUFF BEFORE YOU START HAVING KIDS ??)

    Re. 7,

You are absolutely right!!! They SHOULD tell you this before you start
your family. I was married in Massachusetts 6 years ago, and when we
went for our routine blood tests, they asked me if I planned on having
children. When I said yes, they ran an additional suite of tests for
rubella, mumps, etc. immunity. The test results indicated that I was
NOT immune, so I had some innoculations for these diseases.

I was told not to conceive for three months, and didn't. This was a
wonderful way to handle this! When I did get pregnant, I felt I had
one less thing to worry about!

Kristen:

I had the rubella titer done several months before getting pregnant. My OB
suggested it when I told her that I was thinking about getting pregnant.

Anyway, the result indicated that I was immune to rubella. When the same
test was run after I got pregnant, it indicated that I wasn't immune.

My OB gave me the following advice: stay away from small children
and immediately report the appearance of any red dots/rashes on my body.

Everything turned out fine & I had the MMR after I delivered.

Try not to worry !

Just to confirm what others have said, the test by my OB told me I
had never had it !! Monday-morning-quarterbacking, he told me if I was
THINKING of getting pregnant, I should have had the test and been
vaccinated before-hand !! Oh, well, following all the standard advice,
    everything came out fine.......

one side-note, though, the OB told me that, after delivery, he'd
give me the vaccine in the hospital "in case I wanted to have another
child later on"......but he/I forgot all about it !!! Since I'm not
planning another one (single-parent), no big deal, but if you think you
may have more this one, GET THE VACCINE so you won't have to go through
the worry all over again !!

    	Good luck !

    Hi,

I have a few questions about Rubella.

I'm 20 weeks pregnant and haven't been vaccinated against Rubella
(or had it has a child). After reading these replies I'm now even
more concerned than I was before. The blood test showed that I a
    not imune.

My doctor didn't tell me what to do or not to do, to avoid Rubella
but I could sort of figure that out myself. I did however go to the
Christmas market and had to do some shopping on a Saturday :-)

Q: can a "grown up" carry the virus even if he or she has a protection
    against it?

Q: Is it dangerous to catch Rubella during the whole pregnancy, or
are there any critical months (weeks)....I think the first trimester
was mentioned in the base note.

I'm trying to tell myself that "If I haven't cought it in 29 years, why
should I now?"...but you still worry, don't you?

    	Regards

Lena,

Unfortunately, I can't answer your questions, but just wanted to sympathize !
When I was carrying Matt, the dr. told me the tests showed I had never had
Ruebella either and hadn't been immunized. I believe the critical period
is if you're exposed in the first trimester, but it's been 7 years since
Matt was born, so my memory of what the dr. said is fuzzy :-( sorry !!

One sidenote - the dr. suggested but we forgot to follow thru - AFTER you
have the baby, if there's a possibility of having more, talk to the dr. about
getting immunized !!! My dr. was going to do it right after I delivered Matt,
but we both forgot ! Since I doubt I'll be having any more (even tho' I'd
love to), I haven't followed up on it, but you may have a different plan !!

Good luck and try to not worry too much !

    Lena,

    I typed the base note....

I asked my Dr. the same thing once I entered my 2nd trimester.

From what he said, getting rubella in the 1st tri would/could
result in congentital hear defects....2nd/3rd, hearing loss
    and a few other things.

I am 34 weeks now and the only time I think about not being
vaccinated is when I see kids....I had my hubby check out the
daycare, and usually avoid areas where there are lots of kids.
I believe you have to 'HAVE' Rubella to pass it...it cannot be
passed unless a person has it. So adults can pass it only if
    they actually have it.

I still go shopping and sometimes am around kids, but my Dr.
told me, If I haven't had it yet, when I was around these types
of areas all the time, the chances are low that I will get it
just because I am prego. But I would definately, avoid schools
    and daycare areas...

I'll sure be glad when I have my baby, so I can get my shot and
    never worry about this again!

Try not to worry (easier said then done, huh?)

    Hi,

    Thank's for the replies.

I'm staying away from children and "kindergartens"/Schools as well.
It's difficult to avoid going shopping or running into kids every
now and again though. Those little creatures seem to be everywhere
    nowadays :-)

re .12 Another child? Well who knows. I'll try and handle this first
one, and then we'll see :-)
