950.0. "Looking for a good price kitchenette" by AKOCOA::BOLAND () Thu Jun 06 1991 13:16

    I'm having a small problem with my 'big'-little girl. Courtenay is
    15 months and no longer wants to sit in her high chair. She will only
    eat on Dad's lap or if you sit with her in the kitchen. Our kitchen
    has a breakfast bar and we don't have a kitchenette. So now it's time
    to buy one since the bar only fits two....

    Does anyone know where I can get an inexpensive dinette/kitchenette
    set? I'm trying to stay around the $350 price range but it doesn't
    seem possible. I've called some factory outlets in Athol and Gardner
    and it looks like the cheapest will be $450 - $750.

    I don't want anything fancy just a well made table that will last even
    though it is going to get beat up from kids. Is this possible?

    Did you try Montgomery Ward? I don't know where the nearsest
    store to you would be.

    They usually have something sturdy and usable for well under $350.
    Sometimes it's the floor model -- we got a table and 6 chairs for
    $179 several years back because it was a discontinued model and
    they wanted to get rid of it.

    	RE: Montgomery Ward

    	If you live in the Gardner area (where I'm originally
    	from), the closes Montgomery Ward would be in Nashua
    	but I'm not *exactly* positive where the store would
    	be...

    	A few suggestions, although I have no idea on how much
    	they run, (you can always call)

    	What about a Rent-a-Center type place that would be
    	willing to rent to own??

950.3that's quite a ways!CSSE32::RANDALLBonnie Randall Schutzman, CSSE/DSSThu Jun 06 1991 17:575
    The Montgomery Ward in Nashua is across from the Nashua Mall,
    off exit 6. Isn't there one in Fitchburg or something????? Seems
    like even Worcester would be closer.

    I was just over a friends house last night and saw their new kitchen
    set. It was nice, butcher block type top, etc... Should be plenty big
    enough for your family, but not "overpowering". Really nice looking
    I thought. She said they got it at the FAIR, in Worcester. I think she
    said it was $99 for the table, and the chairs were seperate. Oh, and
    there was assembly required. But it sure was sturdy!

    Good Luck.

    They have the same set at Bradlees. It looks pretty nice for an
    inexpensive set.

    Also..a few back. There isn't a Montgomery Wards in Fitchburg any
    more. It's been gone for years.

950.6maybe a kiddie table will solve your problemCNTROL::STOLICNYFri Jun 07 1991 14:0412

    I've been trying to figure out what this note has to do with
    "Parenting" :-). So, I'll try to keep my reply in tune with
    the file...

    Maybe you'd consider getting a children's table and chair set or
    a kiddie picnic table (only ~$30). I know some people that have
    had never-ending battles trying to get their kids to eat in their
    high chairs and/or at the table and have ended up having them eat
    at their "own" table. No more fights!

    If you're only interested in "new", disregard the rest of this
    note.......

    I moved recently, into what was my Dad's home (he passed away
    last year).....because I was combining 2 households into one,
    naturally, you end up with a "few" ( :-} ) duplicates !!

    Anyway, I have an extra kitchen set that I'd be willing to
    sell, very reasonably - seats 4, has leaf to expand to 6,
    along with four chairs.

    give me a call or send mail if interested

    We used the small Fisher Price table set in our kitchen when we moved
    in to a house with a dining room and an eat in kitchen last winter. My
    boys were 2+ and 4+. I did it because we needed something in that spot
    in the kitchen and couldn't afford a regular size table at the time.
    It worked out great for us - they had breakfast and lunch there and the
    floor was much easier to clean up.

    Now they are 4+ and 6 and we have a regular size table and chairs.

    Regarding: .6

    If you look at the first line in my note you'll see that I state that
    I'm having a problem with my 'big' little girl. You see she will only
    eat dinner on Daddy's lap. I was hoping for any additional insight on
    this also...but also could use some advice on the cost of a kichenette
    since kids are tough on everything, I didn't want to spend large
    amounts of money. :-(

    We did purchase a table with 4 chairs at the Bradford warehouse
    liquidation sale (one day only), we purchased a rock maple table with
    4 chairs (new) for $299.00.

    Thanks for the help!

950.10Don't let her out...HYSTER::DELISLETue Jun 18 1991 13:2816
    Re .9 -- It's been my experience that most children go through the
    phase of not eating unless they are sitting on your lap. And it
    happens around 1 1/2 years old. My son, 22 months has recently gone
    thruogh the "hold me on your lap while I eat off your plate" phase, and
    it reminded me that the others had gone through it too.

    The cure? Like many other things with children, you simply don't do
    it. If you want to eat your dinner in peace, insist on the child
    sitting in his or her own seat while you eat. I have taken Josh out
    and put him back in his high chair 5 or 6 times during dinner,
    recently, because he was screaming to sit in my lap to eat. My answer
    to him was you either eat in your high chair, or you are excused from
    the table.

    Hang in there. Don't start any habits you don't want!

950.11ditto .10CNTROL::STOLICNYTue Jun 18 1991 17:1913

    I agree with .10. If you don't want to get in the habit of her
    sitting in your lap, try not to allow it at all. Some nights Jason sits
    in his highchair with no fuss, other times he wants out from the
    minute we put him in (this happens mostly when he's just not
    hungry). His choices are to sit in his high chair or to get down.

    As far as .9 re: my .6, I was responding to the note title "Looking
    for a good price kitchenette". I thought I was reading
