911.0. "Genetic Defect= Problem Pregnancy " by MATT::DAVIS () Mon May 20 1991 16:05

Hi Folks,

I would like to get some feedback on a problem that I have had in my past
pregnancy. I would like to make this brief as possible - because I have way
of rambling when I get going. I was born with a (Double Uterus) and as
a result of this when I became pregnant for my first child I started
showing signs of miscarriage at my fifth week and was confined to total bed
rest for my first trimester. I was then limited to very little activity
until I started going into labor around 23 weeks and was hopitalized for
2 weeks and put on Tebutilin(sp?) which stops you from going into labor.
I was then ordered to * full bed rest w/ medication* until I was approx 37 weeks
along. I was taken off the medication and I went into labor at 37 1/2 weeks-
and as result- I had a beautiful Little Boy. I showed signed of miscarrage
through almost all of my pregancy spotting, cramping etc... I guess what
I'm getting at is- does anyone know of someone who has had similar problem-
Double uterus? I spoke to my OB/Gyn and he told me that it's not operatable
and the possiblity of having this problem again when pregnant is good.
My husband and I would like to have another child- my son is now 3 yrs
old and being confined to bedrest is one this but having a 3yr old and having
this kind of restriction would probably put me in the nut house.

I'm hoping that I won't have to go through this again- since it was a very
long and difficult pregnancy. Hope to here from you.

911.1My sister-in-law didTANNAY::BETTELSCheryl, Eur. Ext. Res. Prg., DTN 821-4022Tue May 21 1991 07:1517
My sister-in-law had this problem. She ALWAYS carried twins and always
miscarried. Finally she had to have a histarectomy (sp?) (this must be about 50
years ago). During the operation they discovered she had two wombs and they
only needed to take one out. She finally was able to become pregnant at
least twice more and delivered two daughters. Both children were twins and
their twin sibling miscarried during the pregnancy (fairly early if I'm not
mistaken). I think she also lost both twins once or twice after that.

During her second pregnancy she also contracted German measles although late
enough into the preganancy that the effect on the fetus was minor if it caused
any problem at all. Monica has strong astigmatism (but then so do I and my
mother's pregnancy was completely normal :-).

I think my sister-in-law feels blessed to have been able to have children
at all.

    Is fetal exposure to rubella said to cause astigmatism?
    (I am very very astigmatic and am the only one in the family with it)

    I have never even heard of double-uterus! is this rare?

    (yes, another astigmatic Monica)

911.3Two or bi-cornuate? WFOV11::MOKRAYTue May 21 1991 17:247
    Is the condition truly that there are two separate, complete uteruses
    (uteri?) or that one is split, which is called bi-cornuate (sp?). The
    latter is when there is a septum or division between the two halves.
    This is medically correctable via laser surgery. You may want to ask
    about this.  I've had experience with this kind of laser surgery;
    contact me off-line if I can answer any questions. I can also
    recommend an excellent doctor whatever your condition.
911.4Rare?TANNAY::BETTELSCheryl, Eur. Ext. Res. Prg., DTN 821-4022Wed May 22 1991 05:3812
Regarding .2

I have no idea how rare it is but my sister-in-law's case was sufficiently
rare to be written up in (German) medical journals.

Also re. .2

I don't KNOW if rubella causes astigmatism but, I imagine that if it is
contracted during the formation of the eyes it could result in a deformed
eyeball which could result in astigmatism. But that's a lot of could's...

911.5Double UterusMATT::DAVISWed May 22 1991 14:1218
Hi,

re:3 I have two seperate Uterus's One that is normal size and the other
is smaller than normal- consequently, I can bear two fetus up to three months
apart in age... which is very possible if I were not careful when I was
already pregnant for one. They would not be twins giving the fact that they
come from two diffrent wombs. This sounds really strange- but my Doctor
thinks it's the best thing since apple pie...He is very interested in my
condition.. But did not recommend surgery... that was three years ago..

I probably should check into it further- 9 months is a long time to
be on your back- yet I feel I'm fortunate to have had a healthy baby.

also re:3 I would be interested in talking to you off line regarding this..
and Dr. recommendations.... Pls call me dtn:291-9125 or Esis::davis

Thanks, Dianne

    Speaking of strange cases... the uncle of a friend of mine had three
    kidneys. The doctors loved speculating on that too.

    Three kidneys.....hmmmm.....

    My niece has three, one is NON functional. Not a problem for her she's
    heavily into gymnastics and dance.
