904.0. "Allergic to milk... Alternatives?" by ESRAD::PANGAKIS (Tara Pangakis DTN 287-3551) Wed May 15 1991 12:48

    A dir/key=allergies and dir/title=soy haven't provided me with an
answer, so I request a pointer to information about alternatives
to soy formula (which is expensive) for an 2 year old who is allergic
to milk (actually, all dairy products).

I don't have an answer for you, but I do have a question; What are the
    symptons of the allergy?

All dairy products, or just cow's-milk dairy products?

You can get yogurt and such made from goat's milk or sheep's milk
in most larger health-food stores. It wouldn't surprise me if
they also carry alternate formulas. They often have bulk-buying
arrangments that will reduce the cost, too.

904.3Milk banks??GOLF::TRIPPLWed May 15 1991 14:2116
Where are you located? If you are *diagnosed* with a milk or dairy
product allergy, is your child able to drink breast milk. The basis of
my question is the Milk Bank of Central MA, which is located at
Memorial Hospital in Worcester can provide donated expressed milk to
you. If you're not in this area contact whatever hospital in your area
that has a Neonatal ICU for referral to the nearest milk bank.

I do remember, however, when I donated almost 6 years ago that that
milk bank was sending supplies to a youngster in one of the deep south
states (Tennessee??) who was something like 5 at the time. Her case
    was probably quite extreme though.

If it's a lactose intolerance you might try the lactose free milk sold
    in the supemarkets.

904.4Rice, soy, goatWINDY::SHARONSharon StarkstonWed May 15 1991 14:3516
There are so many alternatives! For beverages, there are soy and rice "milks".
They are usually in asceptic packaging.

And, as noted, goat's milk, which tastes very close to cow's milk. There are
frozen desserts, margarine spreads and cheeses.

For calcium, use greens (collard, beet. kale, brocolli), figs, sesame seeds and
tofu made with calcium.

Take a walk through a good sized health food store. You will find cookbooks
with diary free recipies to give you more ideas.

And don't worry...from someone who has eliminated various common foods to
control allergies and health...it is not hard to find delicious things to eat.

904.5RE: .1 symptoms and pedi prescribed medicationESRAD::PANGAKISTara Pangakis DTN 287-3551Wed May 15 1991 15:207
    RE: .1

This is my niece I'm talking about here so, I'm not entirely sure
of the complete symptons, but *I* have observed her lips, moments
after sneaking some yogurt, swell and turn blue. My sister-in-law
immediately gave her some medication prescribed by the pedi and all
    was well...

my previous daycare provider who is also a foster parent has a foster
boy who is allergic to all milk products (he has a lactose intolerance)
and he can not even eat cookies that have milk in them. So she found
these animal crackers that are called Fookies. They have no milk of
any kind, shape or form in them and they are pretty good. She has to
give him soy formula until the doctor tells her differently. You might
want to mention to your sister-in-law about the goats milk. I have a
friend who has a friend whos kids are allergic to cow's milk and she
has to go to a farm and get the goats milk for her kids.

Remember that there is a big difference between allergy and
    intolerance.

An allergy will produce a histamine reaction, varying from a
very mild skin rash to life threatening swelling of the airways.

An intolerance will produce a digestive tract reaction, varying
from mild stomach ache to vomiting to diarrohea and is usually
non-life threatening in teh short term.

My daughter also developed an allergy to milk products at this age
(they caused a lot of fluid in her head which led to many ear
infections). .4 sugested that you go to a large health food store, and
I agree. We shopped for her at Bread and Circus (a chain of natural
food stores in the Boston area) and found many varieties of soy milk,
soy cheeses in several varieties, even "Pizz-soy" - pizza made with soy
    cheese (actually quite good).

Also, don't forget that there are two good and easy calcium
supplements: (1)calcium fortified orange juice (a recent article said
that the formulation of Citrus Hill was very effective) and (2) Tums.

    RE: .4 and .8

You don't even need to go to Bread and Circus! Star Market (North
Reading, MA anyway) has a fairly impressive "Natural Foods" aisle.

Boy, it's amazing what you can find when you know what you're looking
    for ;-)
904.10Prescription & Dairy EaseTOTH::HILDEBRANDTue May 21 1991 18:4910

My husband has had problems with milk for years. He tried some Dairy
Ease and he can now eat ice cream. he told his doctor this and the
doctor also gave him a prescription which he can put in milk and
    drink it without having problems.

You make wish to consult with you physician and see if you can use
either Dairy Ease or get a prescription.
