886.1Camp Alton - boys campJUPITR::LUSKEYThu May 09 1991 16:2914
Camp Alton, on lake Winnipesauke (horrible spelling), is a wonderful
    boys camp.

My husband and I go there for either one week or two weeks per year,
where my husband is the "camp doctor" for those weeks. The people who
run and own the camp are wonderful, and we can't wait to have children
so we can send them there.

It's a sports camp and the food is wonderful! High morals and
    beautiful grounds.

If you want more information, let me know.

Have you checked with the Boys/Girls Clubs in Marlboro,?? Or the
Recreation Dept for the city???? I know I attended summer camp in
Marlboro (on the lake by the old Keepers II) when I was 10. Its
been 15 years...but you never know! I've seen the place packed in the
    summertime...(and not to the public..)

Give em a call...what can you lose.

886.5YMCA and Church campsNRADM::TRIPPLFri May 10 1991 11:3319
I'd suggest you check with the Worceste YMCA. I work out there several
times a week and know that they have a very active after school and
summer recreation program. They do have an outdoor camp in(I'm fairly
certain) Berlin, if not it's Clinton, on a lake. I've also been told
that the Y offers "camperships" for families who qualify, you must
apply for these. I know they take the preschooler's there during the
summer two mornings a week. Also you might check with whatever church
you're affiliated with. The church where my son goes for daycare has
already got the brochures up for summer camp, and we just received
information in our church bullet in this past week.

Does your son belong to the boy scouts? A friend of mine has an 11
year old and he is given the option of staying overnight for up to two
weeks, or going to a boy scout camp for day only sessions.

GEE is 4 too young to ship them off to camp for a MONTH??? (just
kidding! it's already been a "challenging" morning on the homefront!)

Paul, I live in Holden and for the past 2 summers, my stepdaughters
have gone to the YMCA camp in West Boylston. Both have enjoyed it a lot
and liked the curriculum and the schedule. Also, there is a program of
"counselor in training" type activities (for a reduced camp fee) for
pre-teens upward.... 11 may be the lower cutoff age, or it could be
    higher.

Isn't there a camp in Groton somewhere?
886.9ChewonkiEXPRES::GILMANThu May 23 1991 13:3315
Camp Chewonki, Wiscassett, Maine. Its an EXCELLENT summer boys camp
with co-ed off season educational programs. Chewonki has had
environmental core activities since its founding back in the 1920's.
I went there as a boy and later as a counselor for years. It on a
penninsula on the Maine Coast surrounded by salt water inlets. The
surroundings are woods and salt water. The camp owns the penninsula
so its private and has an away from it all feel. I consider it one
of the most creative appropriate camps for kids in the U.S. today.
The environmental core attitude instills environmental responsibility
right up front in a kids life. The activites are all the typical ones
PLUS all sorts of extended tripping programs in additional to the in-
camp activities. This is a 'four star' camp, TOP notch, but not
    necessarily top price.

886.10Summer day camp in Temple, NHMOIRA::FAIMANlight upon the figured leafThu May 23 1991 15:2630
I'll just quote this verbatim. Kirstin Kantner is our favorite babysitter,
and I know several of the other organizers or their parents, but I don't
have any personal connection to this.

	-Neil

--------------------------------------------------

Summer day camp for the month of July for Monadnock region children ages 6-10
is being planned at the Kantner's beautiful hilltop farm (Derbyshire Farm) in
Temple. Four enthusiastic young people would love to take your child for a
two or four week session at this 75-acre expanse of fields and forests. Each
week will focus on a central theme; primary activities will include drama,
singing, dance/movement, arts and crafts, organized and free games, hiking,
fort-building, romping, and swimming.

We are... Barry Lewis, 19 is studying creative dramatics at Cape Cod
Community college and has much experience both participating in and leading
children's theater groups. Lana Bessey, 18, High Mowing and Pine Hill
graduate, loves singing, has had extensive childcare experience, and plans
to major in child studies at college. Kaeli Sutton, 17, is a member of BRIAH
dance company and teaches young children's classes at Hypaxis studio [Wilton
NH dance studio]. Kirstin Kantner, 16, also a graduate of Pine Hill and
member of BRIAH dance company is interested in integrating nature and the
arts into everyday life. She has spent many summers hiking and camping and
knows every magic nook and cranny of Derbyshire Farm.

The camp will run from July 1-29, 9am to 3pm, Monday-Friday. The cost is
$150 for two weeks. Please contact Lana at (603)654-5463 or Kirstin at
(603)654-2523 for registration details.
886.11Camp Nashoba, Littleton DaycampWONDER::BAKERMon Jun 03 1991 15:3013

For a day camp in Littleton try Camp Nashoba. I attended it as a
child an loved it. They seemed to have more activities than many of
the other day camps. They have lots of water activities and are located
on Fort Pond. I worked there as a counselor for a year too.

I'm not sure of the cost but I have a feeling it is an expensive camp.
I really enjoyed it was much nicer than the other 5 daycamps I
attended in the years before I went to Camp Nashoba.

Sorry I don't know the phone number.

Sandy, in Merrimack there's the Naticook Day Camp (9:00-4:00) offered
    thru Wasserman Park. $200 for a two-week session with a $25.00
registration fee ($50 for non-resident). Too expensive for my pocket
book :), however this is a beautiful camp. At an additional fee you
can drop the kids off earlier and have them stay later.

Facilities include: lake, pool, tennis courts, volleyball, basketball,
    little theatre, game room, etc.

For more information or to arrange for an appointment call 882-9895.

Saw this in the local paper. Juli's daycare instructor mentioned she
is sending her 9-year old son here, but also added that she "recommends
it for children who don't require assistance" (eg. toddlers?).

Sign-up is underway for Summer Day Camp '91 at the Hudson Youth Center.
The 10 one-week sessions will begin on Monday, June 24 (1991) and conclude
on Friday, August 30. The Day Camp '91 will be open Mon-Fri from 8 am - 6 pm.
Each Tues and Thurs the campers will attend field trips. A sampling includes:
a whalewatch, Hampton Beach, Red Sox baseball game, Canobie Lake Park,
York Beach (Maine), Mystic Aquarium and Seaport (Connecticut) and many
other places. Mon, Wed and Fri the campers will have a program of
indoor/outdoor games, arts & crafts, cooking and a time for free swim.
Day Camp is open to all boys and girls age 5 (who have completed kindergarten)
to 16 years old. The cost is $55 per week per child.

The Youth Center summer program has also expanded to include the preschool
children. "Camp Little Sprout" will focus on the 3-5 year olds
(5 year old children who have not completed a year of kindergarten).
"CLS" will be held on each Tue and Thur morning from 9:30 am - 12:30 pm for
the 10 weeks. Linda Kane will be the lead teacher. Cost is $25 per week
per child.

Call Val Comeau, Program Director, at (508)568-8528 or stop by the Youth
Center at 49A Lincoln Ct. (off Route 85) in Hudson to register.

All youths from Hudson, Marlboro, Stow, Bolton, Berlin and any other
surrounding towns are invited to join in the programs. There is a
$5 registration fee for all children who are not presently members of
the Youth Center.

Founded in 1968 as the Girls' Club of Hudson, the Hudson Youth
Center is now in its 23rd year of programming.

Mod. Please move this note if required.

I have chosen two day camps I may be sending my son to in Merrimack.

Naticook $250 for two weeks

Camp Sergeant $150 for two weeks

Both have openings, both seem to have good programs and are about the
same in price. I would like to hear from anyone who have sent there
children there. My son is eight and enjoys sports and computers.
Thanks,

I've checked other notes and did find what I'm looking for, hence the
    new note.

I'm trying to find information on a baseball summer camp. Possibly
even a basketball camp. One week, overnights. I'd like to find a camp
that includes some citizenship and/or scholarship along with the
    athletics.

Any pointers to other conferences or suggestions would be greatly
    appreciated.

Marv, I know this is going to sound vague, but here's the best I can
    offer.

My cousin, who lives and grew up in North Reading MA, always attended a
summer "hockey camp", which was somewhere in Canada. It was held
during summer school vacation, and I believe sponsored by the Boston
Bruins. (My aunt said something about a lot of the Bruins' players live
in or near No. Reading, fact or fiction I don't really know).

I think that if you contacted the director of atletics for the school
department they could give you some advise.

    information you want.

886.24POWDML::SATOWThu Feb 20 1992 15:1526
Marv,

What geographic location are you looking for?

For baseball camps specifically, I'd suggest HECKLE::BASEBALL and
VAXWRK::RED_SOX.

And in addition to what Lyn suggested, I'd ask people in your local youth
baseball program.

One thing to remember about many of the sports camps, especially teenage
level residential camps, is that many of them are for kids who are SERIOUS
about the sport, have played it for years, and are very good. Some are more
rudimentary. So it's important that when you are looking into it to make
sure that the level of play and instruction, and the skill level of the other
campers, is appropriate for you.

For something related, namely camps that include citizenship and scholarship,
but have sports also, I'd guess that most YMCA and Scout camps would include
a lot of sports in their activities.

I have a neighbor (former Major Leaguer, currently a college baseball coach)
runs a non-residential camp in the Greater Maynard Area. If you want more
info, send me mail.

I don't have the details yet but I got word of a basketball camp run by
Providence College. The kids stay in the PC dorms and work out with
the PC coach and players. I was told it was not very expensive and
Providence, RI is close to where I live in Nashua, NH.

When I get details, I'll post them.

Also, the Nashua Parks Dept, in conjunction with the Nashua High School
holds a daycamp in the summer. Very cheap. When that info is

We're considering sending our 12-year-old son to Space Camp/Space
Academy. Has anyone had any experience with this?

He needs something to spur him to work harder at the level of his
ability in school. He's interested in rockets and airplanes. We
thought that this might give him some academic motivation, as well as
help develop some independence and teamwork skills (and be fun).

Is Space Camp or Space Academy worthwhile? Can you tell me something
about the program? (we have brochures on the way - interested in actual
experiences of other kids). Which program is more appropriate for a
    7th grader?

Our son went to Space Camp last summer. He had just turned 13. He went
to the one in Florida, but I think they are both the same.

He is a LONER - so much so, that we worry about him. After we dropped
him off, we spent the next week worrying about how he was going to get
along in a camp/dormitory environment. NO PROBLEM!!!!!!!!! He loved
it and absolutely raved about it for weeks afterwards.

They do encourage team work. It is both educational and fun.

I have nothing but praise for Space Camp.

I am looking for a day camp for my daughter. She will be 5 in May. She is
quite independent, and has been in day care since she was born, and pre-school
for the last 2 years. I found that she was very bored in daycare all day last
summer, so she is ready for camp. I live in Billerica and work in Maynard.
I would appreciate any recogmendations, particularly camps that you have sent
your kids to recently. I have a newspaper with adds for several camps in the
Concord area but I would like to hear from people who have actually used these
camps. Since I work full time, the camp must have some kind of extended care
or an affiliation with someplace that can pick the kids up and keep them until
around 6pm.
