842.0. "Cottontails Cloth Diapers?" by NUGGET::BRADSHAW () Mon Apr 22 1991 15:47

    Has anyone had experience with "Cottontails" cloth diapers?

    I had a saleswoman come to the house last week (I couldn't resist her
    phone sale pitch, she was so nice!) to show me the diaper. They come
    in light blue, pink or white, have a cotton/polyester filling with a
    vinal covering and soft elastic gathers on the back and at the legs,
    plus really nice velcro closings. Besides the obvious quality of the
    diaper, what really interested me was the fact that you can use an all
    paper/biodegradable diaper liner/doubler that makes the diaper that
    much more absorbant AND easy to clean. (I assume you could do this
    with similar diaper products, too.) They cost $7.95 each, which when I
    did the math, breaks out to around $7 a week (with the liners, buying
    enough to wash every 4 days, they're guaranteed for 100 washes, etc.) but
    that price does not include increased water bills and hot water costs.

    I bought just one to try it out this weekend and it worked great. At
    first I hesitated because I hate to do laundry, but then remembered that
    what I really hate is the sorting, folding and putting away which would
    really not be a factor with the diapers.

    Have any of you used or are using the Cottontails or similar diaper?
    Did they work well? Any rashes? Was the laundry a real pain? Increaed
    water/fuel bills significant?

    What did you think? A reference to other notes on the subject welcome!

    	Thanks,
        Sandy

    I got a phone call from these folks a few weeks ago, with a promise to
    send info in the mail, which they have not sent. I used cloth diapers
    and Nikkis with my first child 3 yrs. ago so I'm curious to know what
    Cottontails are like.

    I'm also curious to know what mailing list they got my name from, to
    know that I'm expecting another one!

842.2Looking for those cute diaper coversGRANMA::DHOWARDHe who laughs, lasts!Mon Apr 22 1991 19:3117
    Speaking of diapers, I've decided to go with a diaper service for this
    baby (due in July). What I'm looking for and am having trouble finding
    are the adorable diaper covers that are cotton on the outside with cute
    prints, and plastic on the inside with velcro fasteners. I live in
    Maryland, and while I remember seeing them in Calverts in the Boston
    area, I have had no luck in finding the same quality and assortment
    around here. (Could be I'm looking in the wrong places!).

    In any case, a phone number of a distributor that may have a catalog or
    just a lead on a store to call would put me leaps ahead from where I am
    now!

    Anyone have any ideas?

    Thanks,

    Dale

    re: .2

    I use Diaperaps, that sound pretty much like what you are looking for.
    They are cotton outside, nylon inside, with Velcro closures. They come
    in solid colors, and pretty prints, and on Saturday I saw new ones -
    pink or blue stripes like the disposables!

    The company is in Southern California and I have purchased through the
    mail as well as in local stores. I don't have the ordering information
    with me but I'll get it for you tonight. We have used them for 8
    months now and I'd recommend them highly.

    They are in Granada Hills California

    Mail order prices are much lower than dept stores. JC Penney carries
    some of them, also a local baby store. Don't know about Maryland, but
    you can call and find out.

another possibility:

The Right Start Catalog  (1-800-548-8531)

They have the diaper wraps you described (I think they're Diaperaps, they don't
list brand names). Price $8.95 each.

    One more possibility is to call your diaper service. Mine had
    information on diaperwraps and where to get them and also had some in
    the newborn size available.

842.7Biobottoms or NikkisWR1FOR::BREAZEACATue Apr 23 1991 16:0819
    Biobottoms in Petaluma, California (mail order) carries the wool or
    cotton diaper wraps that you lay a folded cloth diaper in. Then the
    close with velcro. Nice because you don't have to take their pants and
    shoes all the way off to get the clean one on. 707-778-7168.

    We have also used Nikkis with either a cloth diaper folded inside or
    the Dovetails, which are biodegradable rectangles that lay inside the
    Nikki. Nikkis are diaperwraps that come two ways - one is cloth on the
    outside and waterproof polyester inside and the other is just straight
    polyester (waterproof). We like the straight waterproof polyester.
    they seem to leak the least of any, including Biobottoms. We order
    those from the Family Club House and I don't have a phone number for
    them here at work. Will type in tomorrow. By the way, both companies
    ship very quickly - I sent a check to Family Club House and it seems
    like the case of Dovetails came in three days! I used them when we
    went on trips instead of cloth.

842.8Nikkis wool diaper coversPHAROS::PATTONTue Apr 23 1991 16:3811
    Just a comment on Nikkis - they also make a 2-layer 100% wool
    felt diaper cover that really keeps kids dry. I used these for
    2.5 years with my son and was really happy with them.

    Upside: breathable (cuts down on diaper rash); actually cooler
    than the ones with synthetics; very good at keeping clothing dry
    even when the diaper inside is soaked.

    Downside: expensive, and ideally should be handwashed.

842.10Gerber wraps are good.WONDER::BAKERWed May 01 1991 14:128
    I use the Gerber diaper wraps and have had good luck with them. They
    don't have any cotton but I haven't had any rash problems. I have
    had bad luck with the Diaperwraps brand because the velcro doesn't hold
    and always opens up. Maybe it is an immitation brand, but I thought
    it was the real thing.

    Cheers,
    Karin
