822.0. "Defective snaps on infant clothing" by PROSE::BLACHEK () Tue Apr 09 1991 16:43

    Is it just us, or do others have problems with snaps on baby clothes?

    Three of my daughter's outfits have had the snaps break during the
    first wearing. I presume the snaps are defective, and not Gina's
    moving around too much. (The clothes have not been too tight.)

    I'm considering buying a snap-installing machine at a sewing store. My
    sister told me they are under $10 and I think it is worth the
    investment.

    Are these machines easy to use?

    The snap "pliers" aren't difficult to use unless the fabric is very
    heavy. They're very similar to regular pliers except that there is
    a rubber "washer" which holds the pieces of the snaps on the ends of
    the pliers. You then squeeze the pliers over the fabric where you
    want to install the snap. It takes some hand strength but not alot
    unless the fabric is heavy.

    They do come in several sizes. Check the boxes of replacement snaps
    for the size which most closely matches the ones on baby clothes.
    Those sizes will also be listed on the pliers. Usually, each plier
    will install several size snaps.

    Hope this  helps,
    - Terry

    You can also get sew-on snaps. REAL cheap, pretty easy to sew on.

822.3Go w/ the hammer route...AIMHI::SJOHNSONThu Apr 11 1991 12:165
    I have the snap gun and don't like it at all the snaps never go on
    right. I think that the best kit to buy would be the type that you use a
    hammer, a rubber piece & wood I believe. It's very inexpensive & have
    been told it works a lot better.

    We had some outfits where the snaps broke off. We brought them to the
    tailor and she replaced them with velcro! Stayed better and much less
    dangerous than open snap prongs!!
