781.0. "Recommendations on bike seats ?" by USEM::SENA () Wed Mar 20 1991 11:57

    I am considering getting a toddler bike seat so I can take the baby
    on bike rides with me this year (she's 14 months). Does anyone
    have any suggestions or recommendations for this type of seat ?

    Thanks in advance,

781.1Fisher Price!!!UCOUNT::STRASENBURGHWed Mar 20 1991 14:196
    We bought the fisher price bike seat and we love it.

    You can buy it at Child World or at Lechmere's. I can't remember the
    price, but it wasn't too expensive.

    Another vote for the Fisher Price. It has the familiar breastplate
    to hold the child in place and comes up high behind the head. Our
    son has enjoyed many a nap in his seat. I believe it's o.k for
    a kid up to 40 lbs.

781.3Fisher Price Seat - $59.00FSOA::DCAKERTWed Mar 20 1991 18:588
    I just bought the Fisher Price one - it was $59 at Spags but was the
    same at Toys R Us. It's not the cheapest seat, but it's great. They
    have a good price on that Shell/Bell - whatever it's called - Helmet
    that Consumer Reports recommends.  $29.00.

    Have fun!!

    We've bought two (don't remember the brand of either one), and found
    that you'll use them for about 1 year max, and then the child is too
    big to hold comfortably on the back of your bike. If you've never
    ridden a bike with one on, it'd be worth trying a friend's first - it
    *REALLY* make the bike unstable, and if you have 30 lbs behind you
    twisting and jerking to see around you, they can toss the bike pretty
    good - you also don't have as much stability when YOU turn around to
    see what's behind you.... at least get a mirror for yourself!!

    Not sure about brands, but one thing to check for is how easy it is to
    take the SEAT off of your bike so if you want to ride without it you
    can. One of ours comes off E Z, the other barely at all - it came off
    and stayed off by the middle of the summer. Also, what happens to the
    kids' feet ? One of ours has a little 'cup' type thing for the feet to
    go in - we outgrew it. The other has a plastic shield that goes around
    the wheel spokes, and feet just hang - a *REAL* pain in the butt to set
    up, but lasts longer once it's done.

    One other consideration may be the 'bike trailers'. They're *VERY*
    expensive, but basically what it is is a 2-wheeled sort of side-cart
    that actually hooks to the back of the bike. The kids (holds 2) ride
    close to the ground behind you, facing away from you. There's LOTS of
    safety issues with those (including flying stones), but it does
    stabalize the bike a lot....

    Good Luck!!

    I guess #4 addressed my question a little. I have been wanting to get
    one of these seats as well. We have 3 younguns ages 4, 2, and newborn.
    Is the FP seat compatible with bigger kids as well as smaller kids? Is
    it easily removable?

    Peace,

    Mike

    Yes, the FP seat is easy to remove and re-install (simple lever)
    and it fits kids from the time they can hold up their heads (plus
    helmet) til 40 lbs. My son who is 3+ and 38 lbs still goes for
    rides, although my husband does the hauling. He claims it's not
    hard to compensate for all that extra weight in the back.
