774.0. "Baby doesn't like Bottle" by SAHQ::FLEMINGA () Mon Mar 18 1991 11:36

I am trying to slowing wean my baby from breast to bottle. So far we
have thrown in a few bottles but she just doesn't like to drink from
it. It is almost as if the nipple is too big and she doesn't know what
to do with it. I am using the standard evenflo nipples and bottles. I
am going to wean her totally off soon and am worried about her not
eating. Any tips or suggestions on nipples, bottles, etc.? She is now
almost 5 weeks and has done very well on breastfeeding but I am
returning to work full time soon and want her to be on formula.

    Thanks,
    Anne

Have you tried different shaped nipples ? When I was weaning my
daughter, I was trying to use the playtex nursers with the nipples they
come with - she hated them. I had to try different shaped nipples
until I finally found one she would take. She preferred the Nuk
nipples. (She also prefers the Nuk pacifier).

I had better luck with the NUK nipples as well, something about
working the same as your breast.

Mine uses the Playtex nurser (large) nipples during the day, and does fine.
She didn't think much of the bottle at first, but does tolerate it. I don't
know how she'd do if it had formula instead of breastmilk, though....

I started giving my daughter a bottle at about 4-5 weeks, for the same reason.
Or, I should say, my *husband* started giving her a bottle. She would *NOT*
take it from me. She'd get all PO'ed and pitch a major fit if I did it.
(It's that red hair!!)

What I've read says that the baby smells you and the breastmilk and wants it
instead of the bottle.

It was a battle for my husband to get her to eat it, but he was great. If I was
in the room, she knew I was there and would stop sucking and start crying.

So, try getting someone else to do it. Elise only fussed for two days, then
accepted that the noon feeding was a bottle, and would take it from me, too.

I add another vote for trying a different nipple. When I started ny
daughter on an occasional bottle at about 3 weeks old she took the
Orthodontic nipple OK, but the formula came out too fast and it gushed
all over. I switched to the Playtex nipple (thanks to the advice of my
older, wiser sister) and the restricted flow was just the right answer.
Other mothers told me of different results, but many tried different
nipples before finding the right one.

I have also heard it is best for someone else to give the bottle -
unfortunately my little one took it from me - how disappointing that
was at first! Also - pick a feeding when the baby isn't extremely
hungry - right - they're always hungry. But for instance late
afternoon or evening instead of first thing in the morning.

One thing I learned in my mothers' class was the earlier you try a
bottle the easier it should be for your baby to accept one. So keep
    trying.

774.6Try Gerber nipple on PlaytexWORDY::STEINHARTPixillatedTue Mar 19 1991 11:198
For the Playtex nurser try the Gerber nipple. It is smaller overall
than the average, and was well accepted by my petite 6 week old.

The Playtex nursers are very good. Baby gets less air, hence less
burping. I change the liner bag daily, just rinse and dry it between
    feedings.

re: .6 You use the liner for more than one feeding? Wow, never
    heard of that!

Maybe the baby doesn't like formula - another thing to try
is to pump, and put your breast milk into the bottle. . .
Mine would not take formula at all, and I've heard of other babies
who were the same way. My daughter weaned to a cup and regular
    milk at 6 months!

Try smearing some breast milk on the outside of the nipple.

My mom suggested warming the nipple. It helped us...
