703.0. "Bottles, Nipples" by KAOFS::S_VLASIC () Tue Feb 12 1991 18:22

    This is a real shot in the dark. I am looking for unused obsolete
    Playtex nipples that went out of production about 1986. I am trying to
    keep my not-so-well off sister supplied with plastic liners and
    nipples. The nipples have lasted quite well but are on their last
    legs. If there's a way, I'd like to be able to replenish her supply
    rather than tell her to throw the bottles, caps, etc. and buy new.

    I am located in Kanata, Canada. My mailstop is KAO4-2/7A.

    Thanks, Susan

703.1I've seen many Playtex nipplesJURAN::QAR_TEMPI LIKE MIKE -- ABCWed Feb 13 1991 12:0910

    I'm not sure where you are located, but, C.V.S. carries the single
    package of nipples for the playtex nursers. I also saw them at grocery
    stores where the jars of baby food etc. are. Good Luck, but I don't
    think you should have "any" trouble finding them, for my son was on
    playtex for 14mo.

703.3May still have some...CRONIC::ORTHWed Feb 13 1991 14:3712
    Am I correct that you are looking for the "old" style? The ones where
    the nipples pull over the top of the bottle and then a plastic ring fits
    over it to hold it tight? They are very different from what is
    available in stores now (CVS included) which fit into a ring and then
    the whole ring and nipple assembly screws onto the bottle. We used to
    have some of the old style ones, which were passed down to us. We went
    out and bought new ones anyway. I'll check at home and see if we still
    have them, although we may not. As I recall, we bought new bacaue the
    old style ones were pretty beat...stretched out and getting sticky. If
    I do still have 'em, I'll let you know!

    I'm located in Mass. The nipples that I'm describing has a ring that
    you instert over the nipples till in place, then the ring (cover) screws
    onto the bottle. If these should be the wront ones, couldn't you just
    replace them with todays. Is the bottle any different then the new
    playtex ones??

These are DEFINITELY different and incompatible with the new style.

The old nipples were shaped like this and actually pulled down over
the liner and bottle holder. :---

They were VERY distinctive. NUK made some replacement nipples after Playtex
stopped this style .. I somehow doubt that they are still around. There were
numerous promotions on about the time the change was made and kits of the
new style could be had for just a few dollars. The old Playtex ones
disappeared from the shelves INCREDIBLY quickly ... almost as if they'd
been recalled.

I suspect they were trying to make their bottle compatible with the other
major brands.

703.6maybe break down and buy a new set??CNTROL::STOLICNYWed Feb 13 1991 15:3417

    Hmmmm....if Stuart's suspicion that the withdrawal was almost
    like a recall, perhaps it's not in the best interest of the
    *baby* to continue the search for these obsolete nipples.

    The new nurser sets or the individual starter kits really aren't
    that expensive. I think the companies give the consumer a "break"
    on the bottle kit and make their money on the bottle liners and
    replacement nipples. So, maybe the best thing to do in the
    basenoter's case is to discontinue the search for the old-style
    and buy outfit her sister with a new-style set.

    For what its worth (and I think I've mentioned this elsewhere),
    I personally have found the quality of the Gerber and Evenflo
    disposable bottle liners to be better than the Playtex product.

    Not to drag this whole subject up again on the goodness or badness of
    nuking (microwaving) formula (there's a note in V2 on this, and let's
    please leave it there!), but we found that some makes of liners
    regularly leak after being nuked ... (hmmmmmmmm) where Playtex didn't.

    Generally though, we bought what was cheapest, or on sale ... usually
    Playtex or a generic brand.

This base note was entered by mistake, and was intended to be
a reply to 4.*, where "Wanted" notes go (and where she has since entered
a reply). However, because of the additional helpful information contained in
these replies, I am changing the title to "Bottles, Nipples".

If you wish to reply to the basenoter's request for nipples, to tell her where
there are some, or offer her yours, etc, please send her mail.

703.9Microwaves did wonders for me!DEMING::QAR_TEMPI LIKE MIKE -- ABCWed Feb 13 1991 17:218

    I always microwaved my sons formula ("I never put the bottle in there
    with the bag though")! I use to fill the bottle with the 8 ounces of
    formula then pour it into a coffee mug and nuke it till it was warm
    enough.

703.10I don't think it was a recallCSSE32::RANDALLPray for peaceFri Feb 15 1991 19:4111
To defend Platex's reputation -- the change in nipples was not a recall
in the safety sense. There was no danger to the baby in the old style.

It was a marketing decision. The old style tended to leak, I think (my
brother and sister-in-law used them), and they weren't even remotely
compatible with anybody else's system.

Part of the reason they disappeared so quickly was that current users
stocked up on them.
