699.0. "Clingy child after illness" by AIMHI::MAZIALNIK () Tue Feb 12 1991 13:22

Eric, 18 months, is just getting over the bug that's going around.
He had the high fever a week ago Sunday and Monday, Tuesday the fever
was much lower, Wednesday it was really just a cold which lasted several
more days. We did tons of nothing but cuddling when he wasn't feeling
well. He went to daycare on Thursday and Friday where he seemed to
do just fine. The only difference is he ate less than usual.

Eric was fine at daycare again yesterday (Monday), but when we got home
he was like I've never seen him. He cried almost non-stop. He threw
his cereal on the floor and I asked him to pick it up (which he normally
would do), but he refused and just screamed and cried. I tried
to get him to pick it up for maybe 20 minutes off and on and towards the
end I felt terrible because it got to the point where, although he was
clearly very upset and cranky, I just wanted him to do as I asked. He
wouldn't give in and I didn't want to give in. I finally did pick up
the cereal.

He said "night night" so I put him in for a nap at 6:00. I figured he
might have napped less than usual during the day. After resting 1/2 hour
or so he got back up. He wouldn't touch his supper (which could
have been because he was given snacks late in the afternoon...daycare
said they will stop giving him snacks at 3:00). When I put him in
the high chair he reached up to me crying and said, "out out".
He was pretty good after that. He kept his pacifier in his mouth
from 6:00-8:00 which is unusual - he usually only uses it to go to
sleep. He seemed okay this morning. But I just called daycare and
she said Eric was sitting there with the whole box of Legos - which he
loves - and all of a sudden started crying. She cuddled him for a while
but he kept fussing. She thought he was tired so she put him down for
a nap and he fell asleep. She also said if anyone looked at him sideways,
he'd cry.

My heart is breaking. I'm here at work and my baby is feeling sad
at daycare. I believe she gives him enough attention because she does
hold him - especially when he's like this. I believe my husband and
I also give him enough attention. Maybe it has to do with just coming
out of this illness where he got constant attention, maybe he still
has a little upset stomach. We have his 18 month check up tomorrow which
we will change to a regular office visit in the morning if he is still acting
funny.

I just am wondering if this has happened to anyone else's children. Is
it a phase and it is just coinciding with his flu? The only other change
I can think of is two little girls joined daycare yesterday. They used to
come to this same daycare months ago and Eric always got along fantastically
with them so I don't think this is the problem.

Signed....a sad mommy,

Donna

699.1Sounds like he's still a bit sickMINAR::BISHOPTue Feb 12 1991 14:039
    He may still be a bit sick--when my son (16 months) has a cold, he
    acts in much the same way: clingy and crying, wants to lie down but
    won't sleep for a long time, doesn't eat as much as usual, etc.

    When he's over the cold all that behaviour goes away. I think that
    there is still some pain (sore throat? stuffy nose? sinus pain?)
    for some time after the fever and other more obvious symptoms are
    gone.

    Donna - I think Eric might still not be feeling well. See note 672
    regarding a bug that has been going around. Spencer had the fever,
    vomitting etc. for a couple days, but after that it was just winey,
    crying, inpatient, and forget about asking him to do anything, and
    wicked loss of appetite. It took about 9 days for him to get totally
    back to being himself. I was getting worried too. So maybe he still
    isn't feeling well but can't communicate to you where he doesn't feel
    good??

    Good luck

    I agree, it sounds like he's still not completely recovered from the flu.
    It took my kids (and me, too!) well over a week to get back to normal,
    even though the obvious symptoms - fever and achiness - only lasted
    a few days. They were grumpy and had much smaller appetites than usual
    for quite a while. It sounds like everybody's giving your son plenty of
    good care - hope he's back to normal soon!

699.4Make a trip to the Dr's32FAR::JBOUCHERTue Feb 12 1991 16:3410
    I would bring him to the doctors for a check since it sounds like
    he is still not feeling well. At that age and similar symptons,
    my cousin's son had mono. He was at the same sitters as my son and
    normally a very friendly active child. But during this one week,
    he pretty much kept alone and was not acting himself. She took him
    to the DR's and after a few tests, found he had mono. I never
    heard of anyone getting it that young but it happened. A quick
    trip to the drs will rule out physical problems. Good Luck!

    My daughter (14 months) had the flue the end of January - beginning of
    February. Kati who is definately not a clingy baby, very independent
    wants to be held and rocked (which Mom doesn't mind since its been about
    8-9 months since she would let us hold and cuddle her). She crys at the
    drop of a hat, and if somebody looks at her funny she falls to the
    floor and sobs. Her usual healthy appetite, has also diminished.

    I can totally relate to you, about being sad. I breaks my heart to see
    her like this. She is also at a sitters, and gets tremendous amounts
    of attention there.

    My sitter noticed that Kati is just about to cut a tooth, I am sure
    this is adding to her fussiness. Do you think your little one could
    also be working on a tooth of his own.

    I guess we just need to ride this one out. Good luck!
699.6ThanksAIMHI::MAZIALNIKTue Feb 12 1991 18:0617
    Thanks for the replies so far. I feel better hearing everyone else
    who had this bug ended up acting this way. I visited Eric at lunch
    and he still seemed a little different, but he was upset because he
    thought I was there to take him home and he wanted to stay! When I
    picked him up he started crying. When I put him down he was better.

    He did do that awfully sad/hurt feelings cry when a couple other boys
    were holding his shoulders doing a follow the leader type thing, but
    that was about it. Maybe I'll take this opportunity to cuddle some
    more. It was nice to be able to just lay with him for as long as
    I wanted last week when he was sick.

    re: mono. I know of several people whose kids/husbands have mono
        right now or just got past it. I hope it's not that.

699.7ear infection?WR1FOR::BREAZEACATue Feb 12 1991 22:247
    We have that flu out here in CA, too, and its wicked! Just when John
    (2.2 yrs) seemed to be getting better he started the weepies, too.
    Turned out he had a sinus infection and an ear infection. Those ear
    infections can be really sneaky and painful. Took JM about two weeks
    to get better and start to eat again.

699.8I vote for an ear infection too!NEWPRT::WAHL_ROWed Feb 13 1991 13:465

    re .7 That would be my guess too! Check for head shaking and ear
    pulling, also sleep disruptions. Those ear infections are sneaky!

    Chase too! 4 and 1/2 days of fever and now a very bad runny nose.
    He is still cranky and eating light. I would give it some more time!
    Luckily you have a Dr. appt. to make sure its nothing else.
699.11Eric's all betterAIMHI::MAZIALNIKThu Feb 14 1991 12:2313
    Eric is at about 98% of his ole self again. Tuesday night he seemed
    much improved. No crying, just wanting to be held a lot. Wednesday
    he seemed very good. The doctor checked his ears and they are fine.
    I was afraid because he got many ear infections when he was an
    infant and I dreaded them coming back. Looks like he's outgrown
    that problem.

    So as they say, if you want a problem cured, enter a note and the
    next day your child will be fine.

    Thanks,
    Donna

    The other thing that I found (we went through a week home with the flu
    last week) is that the first few days back at daycare are exhausting -
    it's getting back in to the schedule etc that is tiring, so at 6 pm,
    their fuse is a little short....

Your note could have described David (16 months) a couple of weeks ago.
As with Eric, David's doctor proclaimed his ears and sinuses clear, but
he kept having bouts of weeping when it seemed that all efforts to
comfort him only made it worse -- no appetite from a kid who normally
eats like a horse -- back to three bottles of milk and one of juice when
he was nearly onto the cup -- and cutting four teeth at the same time,
poor kid.

He still has bouts of this when he's tired, and his appetite remains
erratic about three weeks after he was sick. So don't be surprised if
you have another couple of bad days.
