696.0. "Child Development Publication -- Growing Child" by PROSE::BLACHEK () Mon Feb 11 1991 16:07

I know Volume 2 has some information on child development books and
magazines, but I want to know about a publication that wasn't mentioned
    in that note.

My daughter is 9 months old. We get Growing_Child, which has been very
helpful in giving us guidelines about what to expect each month.
Growing_Child has a reduced offer for a subscription for the next 5
    years.

We decided to not get the subscription, because we can't imagine
needing that level of detail as Gina gets older. But I thought I'd
ask here...are we passing up a good deal?

And even if we don't get it for the next 5 years, is it worth it for the
next year or so? (We do have Penelope Leach's book The_First_Five_Years
so won't be totally in the dark...)

    Thanks,

    Judy

696.1We declined the 5-year offer alsoSCAACT::RESENDEDigital, thriving on chaos?Tue Feb 12 1991 02:2718
Well, our Michael is 12 months, and we've been getting Growing
Child/Growing Parent for the past year. We also got the offer to
subscribe for the next 5 years, but decided against it. Our reasoning
was this: they don't give you any sort of price break for signing up
for 5 years; they just guarantee exemption from any price increases
that might occur. Now, since the subscription is just $19.95 a year,
we figured that if the price does go up it probably won't amount to
more than a few dollars. So why commit ourselves long-term to
something we may not even want at that time? We'll just keep
subscribing year by year till we don't feel we need the publication any
    more.

BTW, for those of you who aren't familiar, it is a high-quality
    periodical...

    Hope that helps.

696.2less interest in this kind of thing over time??CNTROL::STOLICNYTue Feb 12 1991 11:3110

Based on my limited experience, I'd guess that a parent's keen
interest in the development milestones (what occurs when) declines
dramatically after the first year (in addition to the fact that
the "milestones" are less tangible and far more variable in when
they occur). This has certainly been true in our case. I'm
assuming this is why they try to lock you in for 5 years....before
you realize you don't need it!

696.3I could have used something like that.CSSE32::RANDALLPray for peaceFri Feb 15 1991 17:5513
I dunno -- I could have used something like this when my first one
was little. I had very little experience with children and didn't have
any idea about things like the living-on-air phase, the temper-tantrum
phase, the I-am-God-and-nothing-can-hurt-me phase, etc.

I'm not familiar with this magazine, so I can't comment on whether it
meets the need. But I suspect that a lot of parents would enjoy watching
their children grow, rather than lamenting that they aren't babies (not
that anyone here has said that), if they had more information about what
is normal for a child that age, what developmental changes they're going
through, and so on.
