634.0. "Rash caused by metal snaps?" by JUPITR::MAHONEY () Wed Jan 16 1991 12:43

    My 4 month old daughter has a rash on her front side. A little patch
    under her neck, a patch on her chest and one just above her diaper.
    The Pedi said that she may have an allergic reaction to the metal snaps
    on her sleepers. It is exactly in the spot where the snaps contact her
    skin. The doctor said to keep a t shirt under her sleeper to protect
    the skin. She also said, maybe the baby would have a reaction to jewlry
    when she's grown. Has anyone either had this problem or heard of it?

634.1i have this problem!TIPTOE::STOLICNYWed Jan 16 1991 12:5213

    I have this problem as an adult so suppose it's possible in an
    infant. I have to "paint" the snaps on my jeans and the inside
    of my metal watch band with clear nail polish periodically to keep
    from getting a rash and can't wear earrings made from anything but
    surgical steel without getting a rash (even 24kt gold!!).

    For what its worth, I've always put a 100%cotton t-shirt under
    baby's clothes (provided it's not too hot). They're so much softer
    and nicer to have next to skin.

634.2My Daughter was the Same!OFFPLS::STARKEYDoreen StarkeyWed Jan 16 1991 13:159
    When my daughter was about the same age as your daughter, she also had
    an allergic reactioin to the metal snaps on her clothing. She would
    break out in a rash under her chin where the snaps on her sleepers
    rested as well as in the leg area where the snap crotches were. When
    this happened, I would use and anti-biotic ointment on the rash and it
    would go away. I do remember using corn starch also as her skin is
    ultra-sensitive like mine.  I had my daughter's ears pierced 1 1/2
    years ago and she has had no reaction to jewlry thusfar and she's now
    four years old (Birthday girl this month!)

    My son had the same problem as an infant ..I remember the red
    spots down his back exactly where the snaps went! I just
    used the t-shirt under his pj's, too.

    You can also get sleepers with pastic snaps...I believe Gerber makes
    some like this. May be best in warm weather when it's too warm to keep
    a T-shirt underneath.

634.5A lot more common than people think...AUKLET::MEIERCollector of Glass InsulatorsWed Jan 16 1991 15:4227
I have the same general problem. My earliest memories are from junior high,
when I broke out on the back of my thighs from the metal rivets they used to
make the seats! (this was back in the old days, when wearing pants wasn't an
option--I brought a pillowcase to sit on). I have sewn small pieces of cloth
to the back of the snaps on my pants when it's been a problem.

I also have some problems with jewelry, though not as bad as at least one
previous noter. I can wear gold, and usually steel (stainless, surgical)
and silver are ok (though I've been warned about them). From what I've heard,
the "allergy" (my allergist said it wasn't really an allergy) is to nickel,
which is often used in jewelry, like in the non-gold part of 14k gold, the
non-silver part of silver jewelry, and probably more frequently in less
expensive items, which have caused me the most problems (watches and necklaces,
especially).

As other noters have suggested, putting something between the metal and the
skin, avoiding the metal in the first place, or replacing the metal with a
non-metal substitute (plastic, a button, velcro, etc) are all good ideas.

By the way, I've found that when my skin is damp (due to warmer weather, for
example), an item that is usually not a problem can cause a reaction; for
example a 14k gold chain around my neck in the summer.

Be extra careful with pierced earrings. Irritation around/inside the hole is
no fun even when you don't have allergic reactions.
