My son, Matthew, has been in a bed since he was 1-1/2. He adjusted
very well. The reason we went to the bed was that he was jumping
out of his crib at night and we figured it was alot safer for him
to get out of the bed rather than jump out of a crib. He never
really wandered around the room in the middle of the night much.
We did however, notice that he had a hard time getting into the
bed by himself so we placed a small wooden stool at the head of
the bed. Thus, if he gets out of bed in the middle of the night
he can easily get back into bed. He still has the problem where
I sometimes find him in various positions in the bed, but if he's
cold enough, he'll just cry and I will find him and put his covers
    on.

My first son was in a bed at 2 years of age. What we did is put
the mattress and box spring right on the floor. This way, he could
easily get into bed by himself and if he fell out, it was just a short
ways down. He did not do too much wandering around and if he did, he
was told firmly to get back in bed. Once the newnest of having a new
bed wore off, he just stayed in bed for the night.

    Denise,

Are you concerned about him wandering around the house or being all
over the bed in unusual positions?

I have no experience in this area but, here's my two cents...

Maybe your son is "looking" for the same comfort he had in his crib
(you don't mention it so I assume that this was not a problem in the
crib). If he slept with his head in the crib bumper, or up against
them maybe a pillow or two around him might help.

Or, maybe the bed mattress is harder/softer than the crib mattress and
he's not use to it yet. Some people don't sleep as well when they're
away from the bed they know and love.

    Good Luck!

Some kids are just squirmy. Kat still squirms around and
sometimes out of bed and she's 17 now. If she drags the quilt off
with her, sometimes she won't even wake up; if she gets cold,
    she'll crawl back in.

We did quit putting the bed on a bed frame to make the fall less
sudden and decrease the likelihood of us being awakened . . .
