298.0. "Looking for Help with School Starting Times" by BOSOX::DKYMALAINEN () Thu Aug 30 1990 13:59

    I have a question I need help with. Starting on October 1, the
    elementary schools in our town will be starting school at 8:40 a.m.
    which means I need to find someone willing to watch two children
    between the time my husband and I leave for work and the time that
    my children go to school. Yesterday I called the school department's
    office to voice my opinion due to the added daycare I have to provide,
    and I was told that all the elementary schools in Massachusetts
    start at that time.

    Do they really? Please respond with the starting time of your
    elementary school if you know it as I need backup information to
    take to the school committee meeting. I really believe they are
    going to inconvenience a lot of parents with this new starting time.

    Thanks

Ha, you don't know how bad it can be. Last year our (Southborough, MA)
K-1 school started at 8:30 and our 2-5 started at 9:00. This year they
cut back on busses, which are used for K-12, and as a result, our
K-1 starts at 9:00 and our 2-5 starts at *9:30*. Talk about inconvenience,
both for parents and kids!

298.2Elementary late in ShrewsburyISTG::HOLMESThu Aug 30 1990 14:4010
    While I was in the Shrewsbury school system, the schedules were
    	7:45 - 2:00  => High School
        8:30 - 2:30  => Junior High School
        9:00 - 3:00  => Elementary School.

    I'm sure this was due to bus scheduling. I suppose the schedules could
    be flipped around to send the little kids first, but the high
    schooler's probably need to get out early for sports and/or jobs.

    In Palmer Elementary starts at 8:40 and High School later (not sue
    exact time) because some High School students could watch little ones.

    In Worcester the Elementary starts at different times, depending on the
    area. They implemented this last year, I believe because of buses.

    Lexington elementary schools start at 8:40. I don't know the times for
    the high school.

    8:40 is occassionaly too late for me, and I find that driving my
    daughter to school and leaving her there, either outside *with* friends
    (the cafeteria is open in inclement - rain, snow, or very cold -
     weather) works. There are always children there by 8:15, so I can
    save a *few* minutes, and make those 9:00 meetings.

    Nashua elementary schools start at different times -- Steven
    catches the bus at 7:55 and starts school at 8:10. He's home by
    3:00.

    My daughter, who's in high school, catches the bus at 6:50 . . .
    which is no fun. She has to get up at 5:30 and we see her for
    about two minutes in the morning before she dashes out the door.

    The junior highs have yet another starting time.

    This is done to reduce the number of busses they need. Each
    individual bus serves three routes, one after the other.
