284.0. "Decorations for nursery" by RANGER::PELHAM (Hey, don't I know you?) Fri Aug 24 1990 14:53

I am expecting my first child in the spring of 1991, and I was
wondering if any parents out there could help me find a store or gift
shop that sells Beatrix Potter nursery accessories, stuffed animals,
mirrors, picture frames, music boxes, story books etc??? I've even
seen clothes and linens w/Beatrix Potter, but I can't remember where!

I live in Leominster, MA and I'm willing to travel for some "unique"
     pieces.

Being our first child we want to have a nursery that we won't be
changing drastically when/if more babies arrive.

    Thanks,
    Melissa :^)

Well, I'm in South Carolina so I can't help you with stores, but you
might check out the Right Start Catalog. (Note 8.* has catalogs and
address/phone numbers.) I can't remember if they have any BP but, even if they
don't, it's a great catalog and you'll find SOMETHING of use in it.

I know you can get wallpaper with B. Potter animals and ABC's on
them in pastel colors. I got a roll of coordinatinng border from
a discount wallpaper store in Westboro (at the Factory town mall
on rte 9) for $4 and it normally sells for $20! I have been looking
for more each time I'm there but they seem to be out. I know you
can get it at the regular price.

You can also get fabric with B. Potter characters. My mother made
a really cute dress for my daughter out of this. You could make
adorable curtains from this. Try Piece Goods in Milford or Worcester
(or try any fabric store..maybe than can order it for you).
Unfortunately Mom bought it in Maryland, so I can't refer you to
    the store.

Good luck, and let us know what you find because I am interested
    too.

I have seen a small collection of Beatrix Potter in the layette
department of Jordan Marsh at the Burlingtom Mall. I think they
have stuff animals, figurines, music boxes and maybe something else.
I didn't pay attention but maybe you can call JM to find out.

I've seen alot of BP stuff in stores like Filene's and Jordan Marsh -
not a huge selection but some stuffed animals, clothes, etc.

You might even want to start calling some of the baby speciality stores
like The Baby Room, etc that will order from various manufactures. They
usually have all the catalogs in the showrooms for you to look through.

Most bookstores will have the BP books, especially the sets that come
in the case. Also check some "china" stores or departments for the BP
music boxes. I got one for a shower gift.

    Andrea
284.5I checked Filene's already....RANGER::PELHAMHey, don't I know you?Fri Aug 24 1990 16:5712
I have already been in Filene's, and all they had as far as Beatrix
Potter items, was stuffed animals of all sizes.....I am looking for
more "original" or "unique" pieces....ie: step stool, plate sets,
picture frames, even coat hangers or mirrors....I don't even know if BP
manufacturers such things. But if they're out there, then I want to
    know where.

    Mel :^)

PS: I knew about the wallpaper, although that was a great price Dot, I
like the idea of the border more than the WALLpaper....I'll probably go
w/plain walls and a BP border.
284.6Searstown?DELNI::SCORMIERFri Aug 24 1990 17:3913
    Mel,
Have you tried the Searstown Mall? They have a store that sells
those types of items in the new section (Donnelly Place??? I may be WAY
OFF on that name, but it's something like that). Also, I found a lot
of those gift-type items in O'Coins in Worcester. I''ll check this
weekend and make sure they have those specialty items you wanted before
sending you there, or you could give them a call (508-701-3411).
Most places that stock that line would have a buyer's catalogue from
which they can special-order items for customers. I used to work at
Jordan Marsh, so I know they are good about special orders.

Mel, You might want to try Luv-a-bye Baby in Harvard, MA. I know they
have some BP stuff there becasue when I was expecting my son I went to
look at the baby stuff there and they had a lot, they also have a
catalog that you can order BP stuff from. I know this because my
friend did her daughter's room in BP. If I see her this weekend I will
ask her where else she got most of her BP stuff.

YOu might want to also trys Norms Discount, I know they have the
    feeding sets.

There is, or was, a store in Harvard Square that has a lot of
Beatrix Potter stuff. I'm afraid I can't be more specific because
    I don't do Boston, but a friend got a Squirrel Nutkin coffee/hot
    chocolate cup there.

The gift shop At Wit's End in the Royal Ridge Mall just off exit 1
in Nashua usually has a lot of nice things like cups, spoons, baby
starter sets, etc. I don't know if they have Beatrix Potter in
    particular.

Melissa, I'm not very good at directions, but Norm's Discount is on
Airport Road in Fitchburg, off John Fitch Highway? Not far from
Rich's, and Heartland, if you are familiar with that area of town.

Liz can probably give you more specific information - but if I can find
it, anyone can! The store doesn't look like much from the outside, but
it has quite a selection of baby stuff. We ended up buying our baby
bureau and crib comforter, sheets, etc. there.

I have a wholesale baby clothes catalog at home, and I know it had some
cute BP baby clothes at very reasonable prices. BTW, I ordered some
clothes for my daughter and was very satified with the prices and
quality (I usually don't trust catalogs because you never know what the
quality will be!). I will check this weekend and get the name and
telephone number for you, in case you would like a catalog.

    Good Luck,

Try Country Baby & Maternity in Littleton, Mass. right near the center.
They have some really cute outfits, sweaters, etc. with the Beatrix
    Potter embroidery.

Also, BJ's Wholesale Club in Marlboro, Mass. sells the set of little
    books for about $ 16.00.

The owner of Country Baby is really nice and helpful. Perhaps you should
give her a call and see what she has, or what she can order for you.
The telephone number is (508) 486-1048.

To the best of my knowledge, Wedgewood has the rights to Beatrix Potter
illustrations on china (childrens cups and bowls, for example). While
you can find it at many stores (Jordan Marsh in particular), there is
also a Wedgewood outlet store in one of the outlet malls (the Maine Mall?)
in Kittery, Maine, right of the first exit of I-95 when you cross into
Maine from Portsmouth, NH.

284.17There's lots of BP out thereSCAACT::RESENDEJust an obsolete childSat Aug 25 1990 19:4435
We decorated Michael's whole room in Beatrix Potter. However, we live in
Texas so giving you the names of stores won't help much.

We got the crib set (bumper pad and quilt) in a baby specialty store.
There are a number of different BP versions, so we had quite a choice. As
mentioned in previous replies, any baby specialty store will have books you
can look through. The set we got also had a stuffed rabbit made out of the
fabric to match the crib set, so we bought that. And we also got two
pillows to match, even though it isn't safe to put them in the crib with
the young'un -- ours sit on top of a bookcase on either side of the rabbit,
a focal point in the room. Pat made a balloon valance for the window out
of a light blue and white candystripe chintz. She also ordered extra
fabric to match the crib set and made a wall hanging out of it. Most of
those sets offer a matching wall hanging you can buy, but the one that went
with our particular set wasn't what we wanted, so Pat just made one. We
also bought a stuffed Peter Rabbit that sits on top of a covered table in
the room, and a beautiful hardback BP story collection that also sits on
the table. We didn't get the BP lamp because it was so exhorbitantly
priced, but Pat found a light blue ceramic lamp, and got a BP shade for it
to match our crib set. She also got the matching diaper stacker. It all
worked out quite well.

We've since been on a constant lookout for BP things, and recently found a
cache of it in a gift shop in a mall in Rochester, NY. They had the little
BP paperweights that you turn upside down and when you right them it snows,
and we also got a BP "Baby's First Christmas" tree ornament as a keepsake
for Michael.

The BP china is sold in many nice department stores and baby stores; we got
ours as a gift.

I think you'll be surprised at how much of it you find once you start
really looking. Good luck!

Steve

I've thought for awhile about entering a response here and finally
decided to go for it...I don't mean to start a rathole; but just
wish to offer my personal experience.

While waiting for our baby's arrival, we decorated the nursery in
beautiful pastel chintz on a bears&balloons theme (I collect bears).
It was gorgeous. Now comes the however part....when Jason was about
9 months old this nursery didn't really suit him any more...it was
just too sedate. Well, we just completed decorating a new room for
him in *primaries*. He loves it!! and get so excited about playing
in his room!! If we were to have another child, it would be primaries
from day one - boy or girl.

I now have about $300 worth of pastel comforters, bumpers, crib skirts,
wall hangings, teddy beds, etc. in the attic....which is why I'm
    entering this response.

Beatrix Potter is *loveley* stuff, tho.

I'm in England for a while now and have found that most of the BP stuff
that is unique is in those "country" type stores that sell cute
nick-nacks or handmade articles. Maybe just stop into a few in your

offer to ship things back to you. I will keep my eyes open for things

FWIW, there is (or at least was up until last year when I moved)
a store in Carmel, CA called "Beatrix Potter and Friends." They
had a huge selection of everythig conceivable (no pun intended!)
with this motif. I don't have the number with me today, but try
calling information in Carmel and I'm sure they'd be happy to send
you a catalog. I got stuffed figures, pencil boxes, a "Tailor of

have spent a fortune then, but not even being pregnant yet, couldn't
    quite justify it...

    Mel,

If you're still looking, I came across a couple of sources of
    Beatrix Potter things this weekend.

The Early Learning Centre in Greendale Mall, Worcester has a modest
selection of Beatrix Potter - mostly stuffed animals and books -
and the cutest BP crib mobile I've seen!

Also, I believe that there is some BP bedding, wall paper, etc.
    available in the JCPenney catalog.

One more source....saw a couple of cute BP items (baby's first
year calendar and a growth chart thing in addition to stuffed animals
etc) in the infants department of Jordan Marsh at the Worcester
Galleria. They are going out of business at this locatin and
everything in the store is 20% off ... not much of a discount off
their normally high prices but the discount may get bigger with
    time.

    Carol,

I am going to the greendale mall first chance I get (after reading your
note about the BP mobile) Just what I'm looking for.

    I already have a baby's 1st and 2nd year calendar(s). But I still
think I'll hit JM for the stuffed animals anyway, those are usually
    expensive.

I went to order the wallpaper for the nursery and for a 10'X 9' room
the paper was going to cost $250 (after a 30% discount)!!! Can you
believe the HIGH cost (for designer paper)???? It isn't even vinyl!!
I think after seeing the price, I am going w/a vinly plain paper
w/small dots or something and use the BP border around the room. That
way if this child ever decides to take a crayon or pen/pencil whatever
to the walls, I'll be able to use cleaner to get it off (with luck
    it'll work too!)!

    Thanks Carol,

    CArol,

I went to The greendale mall and they had to order it for me cuz
they've had such a DEMAND for them! Anyway, It was cute, you're right
(for $50.00 it better be), but the only thing that we didn't like about
it was that it was more for "people" than for the baby. I mean the
figures hung upright, not facing down toward the baby/crib. Alot of
mobiles are made that way, so that evryone else can see it except the
bay, all the baby gets to see is the bottom of it. I saw some others
in there that were the kind we want. So I am glad we went, it's a neat
    place for kids!

    Thanks for the tip,

I don't know where you are located, but have you tried Spag's "Ye Old

I bought mine from a baby store in Worcester then saw the same thing at Spag's
for about 1/3 less.

If I remember correctly, Spag's just carried samples. You need to order

How about Raschelle's in Westboro, or Calverts in either Shrewsbury or
    Westford (I think?).

If you're out shopping for the holidays, consider some of the "Outlet
Malls", in the South Shore of MA, or the one in VT just north of
    Springfield.

284.41sheets are too small.KAOFS::J_MACDONALDFri Dec 06 1991 13:0214
Well I did a dir/title search for a place to put this question,
    and this best fits it.

We have bought a second hand crib, which is a bit larger than the ones
being sold today. We bought a mattress for it and it was too small
so we are returning it for a larger one.

My question is: The sheets that I bought for the crib just fit the
current mattress (the one that is too small), What should I do to
fit the sheets on the larger mattress? The sheets I have are the fitted
ones, and I notice that you don't have a choice in size.

Just another little obstical before due date. JOAN...

Joan, I'm having a little trouble following what you are saying.

Is the crib bigger than the mattress, or you've just found the sheets
don't fit right? If the mattress has ANY gap between the rails and
mattress, DON"T USE IT!!! there is a definite hazard of the baby
slipping between and suffocating. If it's only the sheets not fitting,
consider making your own, by cutting up standard flat sheets.

Personally I've always like flannel sheets anyway.

Good luck in the "waiting game"!

284.43I tried to explain it.KAOFS::J_MACDONALDMon Dec 09 1991 13:0914
Sorry Lyn, sometimes I tend to babble on and make no sence.

Our mattress is too small for our crib so we are buying a larger one.
The problem is that the sheets that we bought (cotten) just fit the
current mattress (the one that is too small for crib).
And when we get the bigger mattress the sheets wont fit at all. All
the sheets we've seen are one size, small...

I guess the only thing we can do is to buy regular sheets and sew them
to fit... I was curious if anyone else had this problem and what they
    did to solve it.

    Thanks for any imput

    Joan,

Try the knit crib sheets. They have some stretch and give to
them, so they'll fit on a larger mattress. If it's only an inch
or two's difference, that should do it.

284.46where are you?MCIS5::TRIPPThu Dec 19 1991 13:3610
Yolanda, where are you? I remember seeing some Paddington Bears, not
sure what else at the Early Child Center (I think that's the name) at
the Greendale Mall in Worcester. I'm not sure but Raschelle's may have
PB crib accesories too. I think I saw PB wallpaper, borders and
material in one of the books at the Discount Wallpaper places, one is
in Westboro on Route 9, near the Burger King, the other is on Route 12
in Auburn, near the intersection of route 20.

    I'll keep my eyes open!

I am in Richmond, VA. I have friends that will buy/ship things to me
that live in GA, TN, MD, D.C., LA., NC, SC, and the Boston area. So
if you see Paddington Bear stuff I am sure that I can locate a resource
to buy/ship it to me. Even some of the stores are willing to ship to
me (at least that what I was told in PA.).

I will check at the Early Learning Center in Richmond.
