278.0. "Early MIscarriage?" by BUSY::DKHAN () Thu Aug 23 1990 14:23

What does a very early miscarriage feel like (at 2 weeks or less)?

I am asking because I have had a back ache for 2 weeks solid, and
my period was 4 days late. I had mild cramps for three of those days,
and my period is heavier than normal. Usually I never have cramps
until it starts or is on the verge of starting, and I am NEVER late.
I am always 28 days exactly. Would it have hurt more if it was
    miscarriage?

    Thanks.

278.1It's quite possible...CRONIC::ORTHThu Aug 23 1990 15:0128
This happened to my wife once. Her period was about 3 days late (she
like you, is "never" late) and only lasted about 12 hours...we assumed
this was a likely pregnancy since this can happen. Then, about 3 days
after that, she began to bleed very heavily, with moderate cramping.
Nothing really worse than bad menstrual cramps. She did go to the OB
and he examined her. He said there were some indications (was not
specific) that she may have been pregnant, and had a very early
miscarriage. He said that this is probably far more common than anyone
can ever imagine...he felt it could be up to 50% of "late" periods in
otherwise very regular women. There is really not a good way to tell.
They did do a pregnancy blood test, but it was negative....but it may
very well have been at that point anyway, even if she had been
pregnant. So....its hard to say. She said it didn't hurt, and she and I
both know of other's who have had early miscarriages (confirmed as
being pregnant and then miscarrying, usually within a week or two of
finding out they were pregnant), that said there was very little
pain...just like menstrual cramps. There is nothing they really do,
particularly this early. The OB said that if it was a miscarriage (and
he felt it was likely in my wife's case), that it was probably a
problem with the embryo's implantation in the uterus, and that it, for
whatever reason, could not attach properly.
I'd strongly recommend you call your doctor if you are
concerned/worried/curios...whatever. There is little they can do to
tell if you were pregnant, but he may have more current info on this
happening (our info is about 6 years old...and lots can change in 6
    years!)
Hope all works out for you!

I've had this happen twice -- I'm very irregular, so I have to be
pretty late before I notice that I'm late. Both times I had the
general feeling of spaciness that I get in early pregnancy, and
both times I had reached the point of thinking, "If my period
doesn't start by Monday, I'll have a test." Once we were on
vacation so it was quite a delay, the second time my period
started the next day. Both times the flow was heavier than usual
and the cramping was much worse.

My OB says it's very likely both were early miscarriages -- the
medical types call them "sponteneous abortions" -- and likely
related to the same hormonal fluctuations that cause me to be
    irregular in the first place.

278.3Maybe it's all in my head...BUSY::DKHANThu Aug 23 1990 17:5212
The other thing I was feeling was kind of a stitch in my right side
in the "ovary area", and now I am feeling pretty nauseous. Don't
know if that has anything to do with it or not. There is definitley
more clotting with this period, although it isn't really a painfull
one. Just cramps for more days than usual.

Who knows, I may be associating to much of what I'm feeling right
now with it. It could just be a screwed up period. I've only been
late one other time (6 days late...a record for me.) but I had none
of these feelings. I may have miscounted the other time.

Call your doctor. None of us are physicians and if there are any
complications I wouldn't want to be the one who "put your mind at
    ease".

I am sure all will turn out well, but call.
