142.0. "Extra Teeth " by MAJORS::MANDALINCI () Tue Jul 17 1990 10:46

I didn't see any other notes in either conference about children
    getting extra teeth.

My son has just finished cutting his molars (2nd year) and I think
another one is coming up in back of one of his bottom ones. He was up
to his wrist trying to chew on his finger that far back. That bottom
one isn't completely up so I can't really tell if he just has a huge
tooth that is coming up VERY tipped or whether it is a second 2yr molar.

Any one know if children can have more then the 20 milk teeth they are
    supposed to have?

    Thanks,
    Andrea

Andrea, my oldest nephew had an extra tooth come in between his
top two front teeth. Until the dentist realized what was going
on he had considered putting him in braces. After they figured
it out, he had the extra pulled.

My two year old has an extra bottom front tooth over to one side,
just like I do! Dentist have always told me that extra and missing
teeth (I had no permanent tooth in one spot too, just the baby tooth)
tend to be hereditary. Since my daughter hasn't been to the dentist
yet, I don't know what they will do. My mother can't remember if
I had a baby tooth where my extra one is now. We'll just have to
wait and see I guess. It does make all her other teeth crooked.
I hope that won't happen with the permanent ones. My neice had
weird teeth like this too - missing some I think.
Thank goodness, so far my sons teeth are beautiful.

My daughter had 21 also, an extra incisor on the bottom. She
also had an extra permanent in the same place, which came up
sidewise and had to be pulled.

The extra baby tooth was no problem, came up in slightly fused to
the real one and fell out at the same time. I don't know if molars
would be more of a problem.

The best bet would be to check with a dentist to see what is going on.

I would have a quick check by a pediodontist. It will probably just
allay parental concern, but it might be a problems that will affect
later dental development, and might benefit from early attention.
