67.0. "Hats?" by ELMAGO::PHUNTLEY () Tue Jun 26 1990 00:03

HELP!!!! How in the heck do you keep a hat on a very active 1 year
old? We spent the weekend at the lake and Josh refused to keep
a hat on, making himself miserable from the heat. I rubbed sunscreen
into his hair (yuck!) and scalp to avoid the sunburned head but
think he would have been so much more comfortable with a hat on.
We've tried every hat you can imagine-tie-ons, elasticized strings
under the chin, baseball caps, sailor hats, etc, etc, etc. He will
put the hat on himself, so he knows what it is for but will not
keep it on. His daddy wears a hat most of the time but it doesn't
seem to matter to Joshua. Out on the boat we had to wet down a
t-shirt and wrap it around his head like a turban (he DID keep that
awful thing on!) to keep the heat down.

    Suggestions?

Pam,

Sam hates anything that goes on his head. Our only other option
was to keep him in a play yard in the shade. Here at high
elevations, kids gets sunburn easily.

About sun block in the hair, how about a butch cut and use the
sunblock to give him a little "punk" look?

67.2Put it on when he's busySCAACT::COXKristen Cox - Dallas ACT Sys MgrTue Jun 26 1990 03:089
I have to put Kati's hat on when she's VERY busy and doesn't notice it.
Then she will leave it on until someone brings it up ("What a cute hat"
or "I like you hat, Kati") then it immediately comes back off.

Other times (especially when *I* wear a hat) she insists on wearing one
and won't take it off for the world. Just when you think you've got
    them figured out.....

67.3Try one with snap chin strapCHEFS::MANDALINCIATue Jun 26 1990 09:0226
    Pam,

I do agree with Kristen that you have to put it on when they are
busy and then keep them busy. When my son was 6 months and we were
on the beach I had a sun hat that snapped under the chin (actually
by his ear) and it also had small ear flaps to keep them from getting
sunburned. I did try one with an elastic under his neck. He grabbed
at it once and got the surprise of his life when it snapped back
at him. He didn't dare touch anything around his neck from that
    point on.

I did coat my son up with sunscreen on his head just in case the
hat came off but with the snap by his chin he had to figure out
that to get it off, he had to pull it up from behind. Otherwise,
when he pulled at hat the chin strap just pushed up on his throat.
He eventually gave up. I bought this particualy hat at Lord & Talyors
but I have seen then in Filene's and Jordan Marsh. It was about
    $6.

For the future (my son is now almost 2.5), put a hat on him as often
as you can. My son loves his baseball cap because I used to think
he looked so cute in it I would put it on all the time. He just
got used to it and I haven't had many hastles even with his winter
hats. Mittens are a different story!!!

67.4try a scarfTLE::RANDALLliving on another planetTue Jun 26 1990 12:0417
With Kat, I always used a variation of the turban idea -- a scarf.
Well, actually, a men's bandanna handkerchief, which is cotton. I
tied it around the back of her head since having it under her chin
    seemed to annoy her.

It was great because I could soak it for extra coolness.

Steven wouldn't wear any hat with a strap, but he'd let one just
rest on his head. We had to put it back on frequently when it
dropped, blew, or was tugged away, but it wasn't a struggle.

My conclusion is that it's the elastic on their chins that most
kids don't like, and if you can figure out a head covering that
gets away from the strap, they'll be much more cooperative about
    it.

67.5We put the straps under her chin AND behind her ears.HPSCAD::DJENSENTue Jun 26 1990 12:5222

Yeah, this has been a battle of ours with JA, too.

We, too, "beached" it this weekend and I agree ... do it when they're
    busy AND do it quickly!

I found if I got the elastic strap under her chin AND behind her ears,
if she did tug at her cap, it wouldn't come off easily, so I could
distract her again, adjust the hat ... and if we were lucky, this would
last about 2-3 hours before JA gave it that much needed extra tug to get
the straps from behind her ears.

Does the "heat" ticker the kids out quicker? We walked Martha's
Vineyard for about 3-4 hours and JA was in her Daddy's backpack. She
slept the WHOLE time! And since she's still kind of small for the
backpack, she slid deep down in it and didn't get overdosed by the
sun. (NEVER does she nap for 3 hours!)

We had such a nice time ... but I'm wondering ... why was JA so
content and sleepy? -- I can only think of thanking the sun's heat.

I'm glad somebody entered this... we've been struggling like crazy trying to
get Alex used to a hat in anticipation of a vacation to the beach July 4th
week. No such luck so far. And his 16-month-old dexterity has him with
the advantage, I'm afraid!

One thing we learned the hard way with sunblock on the head: when Alex was
8 weeks we went to visit friends in south Florida. Since it was May, it
was really hot and bright, so we gooped him up good. No sunburn! But...
after three days he developed what I thought was really bad cradle cap.
The friends we were visiting have three young ones, and they took one look
at him and laughed. "That's not cradle cap, it's baked-on sun block!" Sure
enough, and it took about 6 weeks to finally get it all out (I didn't like
rubbing too much at any one time). So, for parents of kiddies without
hair yet, beware of the sun block scalp! (Ever see the TV show Alien
Nation... think of what that guy's head looks like and you've got it!)

Well, we've got the same problem!! Michael is 10 mo old, and will not
wear a hat. I try to sneak that darn thing on when he's busy and no
luck. Michael has very, very little hair, so I've been putting sunblock
on his scalp as well. I guess that is what I will have to continue to
do as I battle with putting his hat on.

P.S. Marty -- thanks for mentioning in the "sunblock scalp" syndrome
at least I'll know what it is if he get's it.

In re: headgear. This might not work because of the age difference,
but I gave Eric (4) a bike helmet recently, and he was so thrilled by
it he wouldn't take it off for three days, except to sleep; and he
doesn't normally like hats, either. It also has good ventilation, and
    is very securely buckled on.

In re: sleep (.5). Probably the motion. Kids will often sleep three
times longer in a car or a backpack.

67.10Hats with no brim work for usTOOK::GEISERThu Jul 05 1990 20:119

I discovered this about my very fair red-headed 1-year-old daughter
yesterday: she hates hats with ANY kimd of brim. I could keep a hat
on her for up to 20 minutes (MAJOR progress!) if I put the baseball
hat on backwards. Evidentally, the brim catches the corner of her
vision and she's curious at to what it is and pulls the hat off.

67.11Like Father, Like Son - AJ Style!!NRADM::TRIPPLWed Jul 11 1990 16:2915
In our house AJ copies adores his dad in everyway. Dad (and many of his
friends and their sons) wear some kind of cap a good portion of their
liesure time. In taking advantage of this idealism he absolutely won't
leave the house unless he's got a hat on. Our friends know of his love for
hats and have started passing their extra company logo caps AJ's way.
We've also started getting him hats as souveniers of places we escape
    to on occation.

We did go through a phase about 2ish when the had wouldn't stay on.
Fortunately he can be reasoned with and also hated the sun in his eyes, so
we explained it would keep the sun out of his eyes-he liked that idea.

Does anyone have an opinion on sunglassses for the little ones? This
seems to be a very big fad this summer, they're just everywhere you
    look.
