65.0. "fruits vs vegetables" by MCIS2::DUPUIS () Mon Jun 25 1990 17:05

Does anyone out there have a chart of some kind that compares the
nutritional values of fruit and vegetables?

I have a 3 year old who is currently refusing most vegetables. I would
like to give her some fruit in place of the vegetable we are eating,
until this "phase too, shall pass".

    Thanks in advance,
    Roberta

Penelope's advice, which worked pretty well for us: Give her a
multivitamin pill daily, and don't pay much attention to the vegtables.
The purpose of the pill is to prevent parental anxiety, so that
mealtime doesn't become a battle of wills. That's a much more common
problem than any actual nutrition deficiencies. It is amazing how
little they need to eat when not in a growth spurt. When their bodies
need the food, you won't be able to keep them away from it.

Exposure to multiple kids lends useful perspective. It seems one of my
boys is always partial to meats, the other to veggies, but never with
the same partiality at the same time. They switch sides every few
months. I do my best to pay little attention (with only partial
    success).

I think it would be a mistake to think that vitamins can do the same
thing as food. Try eating vitamins and no food for a month. You'd be
    dead, or close to it.

I have a pretty thorough book about food composition. I'll try to
remember to look up the title tonight.

The pill is to decrease parental anxiety. Offered a variety of
reasonable foods, it is extremely rare for a kid to end up
malnourished. They instinctively tend to balance their own diet. Not
at every meal, or even every day, but quite nicely over time. Almost
all parents manage to substantially overestime what a kid really needs.
I have a niece who went several years eating either a carrot stick or a
cracker in alternate weeks (a bit of an exaggeration, but it really
seemed like that). She did fine; 98th percentile on height.

As the dates show, the book was published a while ago. I don't know if
it is still in print, but I hope it is. It has a wealth of
    information.
