839.0. "Hiding things from kids/yourself" by SUBPAC::SKALSKI () Wed Oct 26 1994 20:20

Here's a topic on the slightly lighter side of things.
Anybody ever heard the saying, " When hiding something from your
kids you're invariably hiding it from yourself. " Well we have
a fenced in yard with a gate that is locked, the lock is a key
type and of course we keep the key "hidden" so that our 3 yr
old can't get it and either open the gate or lose the key. Well
come time to mow the lawn and need to open the gate for the mower
and presto who hid the key. Thus ensues a frantic search for the
key that we (adults) hid from the kids. Dooooooooooooooooooooo.
End result, the backyard was cut a week later when the hiding
spot was remembered. Anyone else hide something from thier
    	kids (themselves)?

My mother did this once with some of our Christmas presents.

Hid them, forgot all about them, and then found them a couple
    of months later. *8^) *8^)

I did this with a Barbie Doll. Bought in September for Christmas.
I did remember it but geeze - where did I hide it. Never found it
before Christmas. Still haven't found it. We did do a move a year
and a half ago and thought - OK - I am touching everything we own,
the house will be empty - I will find that darn thing. Guess what?
Never did. It fell into the black hole and never came out!

Let's see...

1) The Christmas present for my sister that I found when I
cleaned my room to go to college 10 years later.

2) The ski bag I got for Christmas from my brother, that
when I put it away in my condo, I thought "Don't put it
there, you'll never see it again", and I haven't.

3) The book-and-tape sets I found on sale, so I bought
a whole bunch to dole out over the months, that I hid
in my bedroom closet, except I asked Elise to get the
brown paper bag out of my closet, meaning the pantyhose
I had just bought, but she found a different brown paper
bag and triumphantly ran into the kitchen, shouting, "LOOK
WHAT I FOUND! LOOK WHAT I FOUND!"

Yes, I've done that....

Oh does this bring back memories...

When I was younger, my mom use to "hide" our X-Mas presents. One
afternoon her and my dad left us with Memere babysitting. While playing
Hide-n-seek, I hid under Mom's bed. Lo and behold, there were 5 boxes
of roller-skates for us for X-mas.

Well, we (brothers and sisters and myself) took the skates outside
in the garage, put them on and skated that afternoon. We did this
    numberous times before X-Mas.

On X-Mas morning, we opened up our presents, and there were NO skates!
When I asked my mother what happend to our skates, she had totally
forgotten she had purchased them, and hid them under her bed! We
    showed her!

To this day, its always a joke at Mom's at X-mas time to see if she
might have forgotten anything in the closet or unde her bed....

    re: -.1 That's funny!

Last year, we tried to get a head start on our shopping, and actually
began buying in late summer. I picked up some stuff on sale, including
a F-P tape recorder, and promptly hid it in the basement. As Christmas
approached, we were still buying stuff, and forgetting what I had
already bought, I purchase yet another F-P tape recorder! To compound
the gaffe, I didn't realize that I had bought two until I started
    wrapping stuff a few days before Christmas...:^}

We "hid" some toys for my son's 4th birthday and Christmas in the trunk of the car
("Heck, he can't get into there!"), but made the mistake of not putting them in a
plain bag. Believe me, he *knows* what a Toys-R-Us bag looks like! One day as
we're unloading some groceries, his eyes just able to peer over the edge of the
trunk, he sees the bag. We quickly shut it as he says, "Hey, I saw somepin!" All
the way into the house, "Mommy, I saw somepin in there!". So I run out the
basement door, grab the bag and take everything to the basement (mad dash to find
temporary safe haven), stash the goods and leave one little toy in the bag. I take
this up to the kitchen and say "Look, we got a surprise for you!" And of course he
is ecstatic as we wipe our brows over the close call.

This story has nothing to do with kids, but I can remember when my dad
got his 3 weeks vacation pay and forgot to go to the bank to deposit
it. So he hid it so that he didn't have to take it all with him on
vacation. We came home from vacation and he couldn't remember for the
life of him where he hid the money. We tore that house inside out and
    still couldn't find it.

Sure enough 4 months later I sliced my finger on one of my toys, and
mom told me to go and get a band-aid. When I didn't return from the
bathroom, mom came looking for me. She found me...on the bathroom
floor playing with lots and lots of money. Dad had hid it in the
    bandaid box!

    I don't think I ever did get that band-aid!
