I am looking for a therapist who is skilled both with families and
individually with elementary age children. I prefer that the therapist be
in the greater Maynard area, but I am willing to go to Cambridge,
Leominster, Nashua, or Worcester, if needed.

Please, please help.

1248.1Are you with an HMO?SHRCTR::CAMPBELLTue Feb 04 1997 13:195
Are you with an HMO? Most HMOs have their own therapists. I
have had some experience with Fallon therapists, and could comment
on them if you were part of the Fallon HMO.

Thank you for your question. I am not confined by an HMO.
Please let me know about any therapist or counselor you could
recommend, whether or not they are associated with an HMO.

1248.3Dr Zimmerman, Nashua, NHHAZMAT::WEIERTue Feb 04 1997 20:1926
Dr. Alan Zimmerman, with Northbridge ?Health Center? in Nashua is
wonderful working with kids, and more specifically, working with the
parents to help deal with their kids' problems.

We see him for guidance with my 11-yr old son, Chris, for his ADD and
    also for his extremely-sensitive personality.

1st session was Chris, his father and I. From here on in, it's pretty
much his father and I, and explaining certain behaviors, and getting
some recommendations, and insights into how to be HELPFUL, and most
particularly harmful. In Chris' situation, he felt that there was
nothing that the Dr himself could do simply by talking with him - that
we all need to learn how to handle his personality better, and that is
best mediated through his parents (us).

The Dr. was willing, but generally didn't agree with, meeting Chris
individually, and we just sort of "drop and run". Though he states
that he hasn't found that to be particularly effective for kids, and
that they really need their parents intervention to work through this
stuff. He prefers a more rounded "family" approach to the problem --
and after only a few sessions, the information we've gathered has been
TREMENDOUSLY helpful to all of us!!

    Good Luck!
    Patty

Our need has become urgent. I will have to decide on a counselor right
away. Please send any and all suggestions asap. I am especially interested
in finding a counselor who is a man who works with children.

It might be easier if you gave some information regarding the nature
of the problem. It might facilitate getting _the right kind_ of
therapist for your problem. Let's say your problem was chronic
bedwetting. If you said that then someone else who had the problem
might be prodded to respond with someone they used that provided
effective therapy for that. I understand your need for privacy, that's
only natural, but as urgent as this problem seems to be, it seems like
you'd be better served in giving out some information as to the nature
of the problem so anyone who might have been in a similar situation or
someone who might make the connection between your problem and someone
they know or may have heard about whose specialty is in range.

Your pediatrician should be able to recommend someone based on what your
child's needs are.
