1094.0. "February vacation activities??" by WMOIS::PINEAU_C () Thu Feb 08 1996 15:50

    With February school vacation almost upon us, does anyone have any
    suggestions for activities for the kids? Although both my children
    will be in daycare that week, I'm thinking about taking a day or two
    off to spend some "quality time" with each. I have a 3 and 7 year old.

    Any suggestions? Remember MA has their vacation the week of 2/19, NH
    has their vaction the week of 2/26. So if you're offering a particular
    activity that is only held on that date, please state so.

    Thanks,

    Chris

1094.1play June Cleaver for a daySTOWOA::SPERAThu Feb 08 1996 16:526
    You may want to call Childrens' museum in Boston to see what they have
    planned. I know it will be crowded but may be worth it.

    On the other hand, you may just want to stay at home and bake cookies,
    make a snowman, walk to the library, or just pretend you're June
    Cleaver for a day.

    Ask your kids if they have special wishes. My daughter loves
    arcades but we don't do that on a regular basis, so we would
    treat her to a day of Fun World or Bonkers. She also loves bowling,
    which we the adults have no interest in, but we would take her
    and her friends there. We also bring her to the movies, most of
    the time they'll have a PG/G movie playing during the vacation week.
    In short, we try to let her have fun, just ole plain fun, during
    Feb school vacation, since summer is so far away (or it seems).
    We don't even bother with anything educational during that week.
    This year, we are all taking off to ski slopes.

1094.3Train-riding in and around BostonDELNI::CHALMERSFri Feb 09 1996 12:0815
    One of the things my boys *love* to do is ride on trains, so on at
    least one of the days, we'll head to a commuter rail or T stop and take
    the train into Boston, and will spend a couple of hours just riding
    around. They especially like the section of Red Line which crosses the
    Charles River and the Orange Line southbound as it passes by the B&M
    and commuter rail depots.

    We'll probably get off at Harvard Square for lunch, or maybe take the
    Blue line over to the airport and check out things from the observation
    tower. Maybe get off the Green Line at Arlington and check out FAO
    Schwartz (sp?). Once we get started, we sort of just play it by ear,
    depending on their moods and energy level. We head back home by 3PM in
    order to beat the after-work commute.

    All-in-all, it's an off-beat (and cheap!) way to have some fun.

    Check with your library for museum passes.
    You will need to reserve them for the day
    you are interested, so you really have to plan.

    I like to take my kids into Boston and walk around.
    I make sure when we finally sit to eat that it is
    interesting, such as the Hard Rock Cafe, in the
    tourist-filled food court at Faniel Hall, or a
    hot-dog cart near the swan boats.

    This vacation I'm thinking of heading out to
    Worcester. I'd really like to take them to the
    Higgens (Wing) Museum with that largest collection of
    armour in the United States (even some for dogs!).

    If not, maybe we'll head for the coast-line, Newburyport,
    Glouster, Rockport or something that has different scenery.
    I just love bumping into a local and chatting. The only
    down-side is that it seems to re-enforce with my children
    that it's OK to talk with strangers.
1094.5Try this sometime.ROCCER::MORRISONFri Feb 09 1996 17:3312
    You might consider Good Times roller skating rink in Merrimack N.H. if
    you live in N.H.. They are usually open during school vacations during
    the day and my kids usually have a good time when they go. They rent
    you the skates for about 3.00 and admission is about the same. The
    facilities are reasonably clean and the environment is very safe. They
    have some people on the floor supervising to make sure noone gets run
    down. We haven't gone in a year, but I think we'll be going there
    soon, since they mentioned it the other day. They have a good sound
    system and usually play pop40 songs. They also have a snack bar,
    pizza, etc..

    re .4 Higgins Armory
    Depending on the ages of your children, you might want to reconsider. I
    took my 3 and 7 yr olds sons there recently for Founders Day and was
    disappointed for their age levels. The armor is strictly NO TOUCHING
    and they enforce it fully, so it was a challenging visit.

1094.7CALENDAR SECTION - Feb 14th- Boston Globe ??EVER::LALIBERTEPSG/IAE - OGOMon Mar 11 1996 12:3711
    Does anyone still have a copy of the BOSTON GLOBE's CALENDAR section
    dated February 14th ? (the week before vacation...)

    It listed several places to take kids for factory tours, etc. in
    anticipation of school vacation....

    I have misplaced my copy and would like to hear from anyone who hasn't
    thrown out their newspapers yet !!!

    thanks,
