1027.0. "What is/are the HOT Christmas toys this year?" by NPSS::CREEGAN () Mon Sep 25 1995 15:33

I probably shouldn't be asking this question,
because asking it might cause a rush/panic.

What are the toys I should be looking for now
(for Christmas) that might not be on the shelf
    come November/December?

    What are the hot items?

Well, Aaron will be 11 months in December... I may skip the toys and
give him boxes (since that is his preference these days!)

So far, what I've been asked for is...

Boy, age 3 - A real crane (he'll have to settle for Tonka)
Girl, age 9 - A milk cap (POG) maker, some kind of cup game that times
how long it takes to stack and unstack them.

I'm sure the suggestions will be coming in quite rapidly once they
    realize how close Christmas is.

We usually go through the fliers on the weekends.

1027.3Aiming for a simpler ChristmasAKOCOA::NELSONTue Sep 26 1995 18:4126
My 4-year-old daughter is doll-crazy (especially Barbie) and loves
horses and "houses" for dolls, horses, etc.

My 7-year-old son loves electronic games of all kinds, plus sporting
    equipment (i.e., basketballs, footballs, etc.).

Last Christmas, the most popular presents in our house were
kaleidoscopes, the Sonic the Hedgehog hand-held electronic game,
    Barbie's jeep, and Colorforms.

We've been going through the catalogs/circulars every weekend, too.
I tend to wait till December to do the "Santa Claus shopping," however,
because tastes do change fast, especially with the younger set.

Right now, we're thinking of bikes and helmets for each kid, plus
books, a couple of videos, etc. We noticed last year that the kids
seemed to actually get bored opening presents. (I'm good at making
a little bit look like a lot.) This year, we're keeping it at 8-10
presents each plus stockings, and we'll let the kids pause to play with
their "stuff" if they want! Christmas lasts longer that way!
Besides, my in-laws are truly generous with them.

Don't know how we did it, but I am proud to say that even though the
kids seem to have a lot of toys, they play with virtually everything
    they have.

hmmm.. gave my almost 8-yr old the Bradlees flyer this weekend and
asked her to circle what she'd like...needless to say it's almost all
circled!! my kids tend not to go for the "hot" toys, fortunately. Lots
    of dolls, legos, k'nex...

My 8 year old too wishes to have the POG maker.

1027.6ALTERNATIVESSTOWOA::SPERAFri Sep 29 1995 13:5810
My 4 year old daughter just got the video "Beethoven Lives Upstairs".
She already had and loved the audiocassette.

The cassette series includes Bach, Tchaicovsky, Mozart, Vivaldi .

You won't find stores and TV commercials pushing this stuff but it is
    one of several worthwhile alternatives.

Others: a plexiglass birdhouse butterfly garden globe
    	    Hallmark Series videos (Secret Garden)
1027.7Here's what we're getting ....BROKE::WEIERPatty, DTN 381-0877Mon Oct 02 1995 14:0726
    All boys, unless otherwise stated;

2 yr old - THOMAS anything, particularly movies, books, "POP"ping toys,
blocks, beads (those things on a wire that you push the
    		wooden beads around).

4 yr old - EVERYTHING. Books, board puzzles, blue-ranger anything, and
any kind of gun (I think not!)

7 yr old - Bike, POG maker, hot-shot basketball, anything to do with
    		crafts.

    9 yr old(girl) - Perfection, k-nex, knitting/crocheting books and
stuff, a kids cookbook and a sewing kit. NO books!

10 yr old - Chemistry set, ANYTHING for his bike, woodworking
tools/kits, Hardy Boys' books, mixes for an EZBake oven

The three older ones also want "Hot Beads" - those things you make
    designs w/ and melt.

I'm finding the older they get, the more they want "traditional" toys.
And the younger they are, the less they want the same thing they SAID
they wanted .... tastes seem to change ~1 wk before Christmas!!

    ...thanks for this note - now I have my x-mas lists done!! (-;

My daughter hasn't mentioned the POG maker but it sounds like something she
would want. Where are they sold and for how much?

I assume that the POG craze will last for a while it seems to have taken over
from Trolls anyway.

I have made two big mistakes in the past. 1) I didn't buy it when I saw it
early enough so it was sold out (last christmas it was a magic eight ball). 2)
I bought it early and it dropped from number one on the list to not being on
the list at all by the time Christmas came.

Actually the second is not as big a disaster as the first as it can usually be
taken back.

1027.9Boys' Toys - Ages 4 and 6VIVE::STOLICNYMon Oct 02 1995 18:129

I gather that Power Rangers are in the NOT HOT category this year?

What's might be good "alternative" toys for 4-7 year old boys?
I'm pretty much sick of action figures.... I was thinking about
a "star station" that projects the solar system on the ceiling,
maybe a skate board (a lot of good that will be in the winter 8-(

1027.10TLE::C_STOCKSCheryl StocksMon Oct 02 1995 23:0620
Based on my 5-year-old and his friends, I'd say that the Shadow is the
current favorite, with Batman and friends (and enemies) next, and
Power Rangers 3rd. Oh, and Gargoyle (is that one character's name or
a generic name??) is also popular. I think they don't care much which
character they have as long as the toys have lots of complicated small
moving parts, which they can leave all over the floor to poke holes in
    parents' feet!

Pirates are also popular. And, on a more optimistic side, almost any
kind of vehicle (fire trucks, construction vehicles, police cars,
airplanes and helicopters, ...) and the workers that drive/operate
    them.

Interestingly, there doesn't seem to be a super-popular Disney character
right now. Lots of kids still have a lot of year-old Lion King stuff,
but Pocahontas seems to have been rather a flop.

Then there's my 7-year-old who would be happy forever if all he had
    was books...

For 4-7 ... think "construction" (shortly followed by destruction!).
Snap together models, leggos, erector set (ToysRUs had a Builderific
plastic set for $10.00 last year at xmas time - BIG hit!), small tools,
woodworking sets, Incredible Edibles. When Jason was 5 he got a
monster truck that came with a mold and some mylar pieces, decorated as
cars, and a mold to make it look like a car. You "mold" the cars, and
drive the truck up a ramp, and it crushes the car - that took HOURS of
his life! There's a lot of those leggo-table things that you can get.

Maybe a race track or train set ??? ALL kids (and some not-so-kids!)
    love trains!

BTW - has anyone seen Percy (from the Thomas series)anywhere, for a
    reasonable price??

1027.13Pog Maker and PercyASABET::HYNESFri Oct 13 1995 15:5913
Was going thru one of the jillions of catalogs I now receive and they have the
Pog Maker (19.95) plus Pog refills (5.95) and two plus pages of Thomas the tank
engine and friends.

Patty - they have wooden and wind-up Percy's, plus videos, tracks and everything
else you can think of.

They also seem to have alot of educational toys broken down into different age
groups.

The catalog is Troll Learn & Plan and the number is 1-800-247-6106.

Happy Shopping!!!

I have to ask... what is a POG maker? Does it actually cut cardboard
circles with pictures? Or is it more like a button maker - where you
take button shaped pieces and simply add your own picture? Or
   something else?

Here's what my catalog has to say:

It's easy to make your own Pogs from photos, magazine pictures, homemade
designs - anything you like! Just remove the self-adhesive backing, lay
your design on top, snap the cap into the Pog Maker, and turn. You've
just created a unique addition to your collection!

1027.23Suggestion of Magic CardsCSLALL::DKYMALAINENWed Oct 25 1995 18:4111
I have an 11 year-old son. Erik and most of his friends 11 and older
are into the Magic card game. If you find out that he plays that game,
it is very easy to additional game packs as they always need more and
inside each pack is usually a special card with special powers. Some
of the boys will even trade cards for better cards.

These cards can usually be found at Kaybee toys, some of the bookstores
in the mall and of course the stores that specialize in sport cards.

We already have a Cool Tools Tow Truck stashed in the basement (originally
bought for son's 5th birthday in September, but decided he was getting enough
stuff already).

This year we are cutting way back. Last year my mother-in-law bought my son
practically every Power Ranger figure and zoid known to human and alien. Plus I
wanted to fill out the Brio stuff, and of course there were other odds and ends
that I just couldn't resist (I am dangerous when it comes to getting toys for my
kids!). But it was way overboard. I don't want to build in the expectation that
an 18-wheeler will back up to the house every year loaded with toys, and I want
him to get a little more appreciation out of what he does get.

He is really starting to get into puzzle books and pre-school workbooks (he just
missed out on the cutoff date to start kindergarten this year). He *loves*
crossword puzzles. He "plays" them by filling the squares in with random
letters, or words he sees elsewhere. He has no idea what words he is writing,
but he is learning how to form the letters, and I want to start telling him what
the words are as he does them. He is starting to try to copy words and pictures
out of other things, like a Calvin and Hobbes book, so I will be focusing on his
visual, creative work.

He is also getting into games, although we are working our way through the
extremely painful process of learning that sometimes you win, sometimes you lose
(and you though Candy Land was such a relaxed game!). I found a neat book at
Learning Express, put out by Klutz Press, of classic board games. It has
checkers, 3D Tic Tac Toe, solitaire, backgammon, and several other ancient board
games (15 in all). They are all pretty good, with varying levels of luck and
strategy. The book recommends age levels of 5 to 8 for beginning players. I
think it was $17.95, and would be a good present for any kid.

What else does he want? If it's advertised on TV, he wants it. That narrows the
list down ;)

My daughter is just 19 months, so she is easy to please. Anything that big
brother has in his hand looks fun! But seriously, she is fascinated by the
simple wooden shape puzzles. She probably spent 30 minutes one day removing the
pieces and replacing them on a puzzle with basic geometric shapes. However,
since these puzzles cost a fortune, I will probably put my expensive woodworking
tools to use and make her some. I can also use the scanner on the PC to scan
some pictures to put on the pieces.

My two kids have suddenly gone puzzle crazy, too (3.5 years and
19 months). I'm thinking Christmas this year will be puzzles
and more Duplo blocks, with one big present for each (or to share,
like an easel). We're keeping it small, as next spring will
    	probably be swingset time!

1027.28trying to keep it simple!CONSLT::CHRISTIEMon Oct 30 1995 12:3120

My son saw the batman batcave in the bradlees flier this week and
said he doesn't care if he gets anything else that's all he wants.
(yea right!) So that will be his big present and then we'll probably
get some things he can share with his sister, like duplos and building
    blocks.

I think we might get Laura a fisher price doll house. She'll be one
dec 27'nth and I know she's a little young for it but we already have
a lot of baby toys from her brother. I'm not sure what else we'll get
her, this is the easy year so we'll probably just keep it simple.

Every year we say we're not going overboard and then I keep getting
just one more present. But with 2 kids (and bedrooms that are filling
up with toys) I think I'm actually going to try and restrain myself.
(and my husband, he's worse than me!)

I was just going to ask about Teacher Barbie myself! When this note
was started I was wondering what the sold-out item of the year would
be, and - sure enough - it's the one at the very top of my 8-year-old's
    list!

Toys R Us is sold out but will issue rainchecks. If you swing by there
and pick one up, they are pretty good about calling as soon as they
come in. They say they don't know when that will be, though. The
current coupon in the store lists it as 21.99 through 11/29. If you
get the raincheck by then and have the coupon, they will honor it.

KayBee Toy and Hobby (mall store) says Mattel didn't make enough and he
doesn't know if they will before Christmas!

So - if anyone sees them anywhere - let us know!

They raked in something like $40 million.

Regarding the Teacher Barbie, I called the Wal-Mart on Rt 9 in

And it's the most hysterical movie I've seen in a *LONG* time!!

Though there was an interesting conversation, when I bought the "Woody"
(the cowboy) finger puppet for my boyfriend, and Chris piped up with
"Mom gave Al a 'Woody'!" .... THEN he realized what he said! Hahahaha!

Good luck. We went to the Disney Store last weekend and they said their
initial shipment of Toy Story stuff had sold out just about instantly, and
they didn't know when more would be in, and all the other area stores had
the same problem. On the other hand, there was lots of Pocahontas stuff
marked way down...

Unfortunately, I got the last one at the Toys-R-Us in Nashua yesterday
afternoon. The woman there said they just filled the display in the
morning and she couldn't believe they were gone already. I am still in

on her legs and arms so she can dance and do gymnastics with her "Mom"

She was a hit in Europe and Canada and is a quiet hit here in the U.S.
I have called at least 15 stores in southern NH looking for her, but

I got my seven year old Suzie Stretch. They had her at Spags, Bradlees
    and Toys-R-Us. I paid $29.99(with a $5.00 coupon)at Toys-R-Us.
Bradlees price was $44.99 and I think Spags was $34.99.

I couldn't believe how much the prices vary.

Another big hit this year seems to be Chicken Limbo. Both my kids are

I don't know how "hot" the American Doll Bitty Baby will be this year,
but it is sure to be the best gift for my two girls. They both love dolls
especially babies and I was very pleased with the quality of the
accessories. We chose the front pack carrier, and the sweater/cap sets
and have the birthday set on backorder. All the sets come with
something for the teddy bear, and beautifully boxed...

I found the company easy to deal with, and shipping wasn't too expensive.
My only diappointment was the stock was limited. I wanted to get an Asian
doll for Courtney just so that all our babies don't look the same, but she
was sold out when I called 2 weeks ago.

I know at almost 5, Shannon should like Barbie, but she prefers baby
dolls, and that is fine with me. I never owned Barbie and hope I never
    buy one!

Playmobile and other common gifts round out our selections.
