1182.0. "Cab rides with Babies?" by DONVAN::PIAZZA () Tue Sep 03 1996 16:29

Anyone have any experience riding cabs with a baby? I'm going to New
York for 10 days and will occasionally need to take a cab in the city.
However, I don't want to have to lug the baby's car seat when I go to
    New York.

    - Do cabs have car seats available?

    - Are babies/children still required by law to be in a car seat even in
    a cab?

    Thanks for any advice.

    Janet

P.S. The baby is 10 months old and has outgrown the infant
    carrier/carseat.

Whatever the mode of transportation, your child should be safe.
    A car is a car, whether it's a limo or a cab.

Even if cabs did have child seats stashed away in the trunk (which
I seriously doubt) would you really want your child riding in it?
What kind of condition could it possibly be in?

Perhaps you can call a cab company and ask if they have a seat that
can be brought when you're picked up, but again, how clean do you
    think it would be?

Call me picky, but I'd rather lug the car seat. It's part of my
job as Mama. Of course, it might get in the way of the "New York
    souvenirs" ;->

Before you get in the cab, make sure the seatbelts work.

Hi I work here in Manhattan and there are no car seats...

Riding cabs can be hairaising - I often close my eyes ...

Seat belts are there in the nicer looking cabs..look for newer
    madillion cabs...

From someone who would rather go on the subway..I would bring
a car seat..How were you getting to NY..won't you have one anyway?

The law doesn't require car seats on public transportation. Something I whole
heartedly disagree with ...

I had to take a cab in Nashua once, and was appalled to see that there was no
seat belt to buckle the car seat in with. I ended up just holding him,
figuring it was better than strapping a 20-lb weight to his back. Instant
missile. It was one of the most terrifying rides of my life. In the future,
I'd walk or rent a car, or just not go.

So, who wants to change the law? I'd sure like to see seatbelts on buses too!
Cram 50 kids on a bus and drive around for a while .... doesn't sound smart to
me!

I suggest a SNUGLI. I have twice traveled to eastern Europe to adopt children
and have had to travel in cars, vans, subways, airplanes. I felt safer with the
child strapped to me..even if only loosely. The bumps can be a problem for a
little one even if there is no accident....heads can bang the side, etc.

The snugli worked almost as well for my 20 pounder as for my 8 pounder so I'd
say it is worht a try if the carseat is really impossible.

I would note the earlier noters caution re: seatbelts. A carseat without a
seatbelt by which to attach it to a car is not of much use. At least my body was
always there for the snugli. Good luck.
