1015.0. "Use of an alarm clock for 2nd grader in the AM" by BGSDEV::LANGONE () Fri Aug 25 1995 17:49

We are wrestling w/ whether or not to get an alarm clock for
my daughter to use in the morning to get her up for school.

Her father thinks it would be a good idea but I would like
her to be a bit older 1st(she's going into 2nd grade). I
feel it's just to "jarring" and would like us to just go
in and wake her up. He feels it would give her some consistency
in the morning and she could set the clock herself.

    	Thoughts on this matter?

    						thanks

I think it teaches a child responsibility and self-reliance. I was
planning on doing this with my daughter. I might wait till she's 8,
but I certainly will do this. We actually have a clock radio in her
room now but haven't pushed her to use it. I would think that might
    help with the jarring part.

My son, now 7, got a radio alarm clock last winter. He asked to have it
set to wake him, and didn't find the radio to be too jarring. It's also
been good stimulation to discussions of time.

My son is sitting right here (he's 8) and he says it's a good
idea to get an alarm clock but Mom or Dad should come check on
her after about 5 min to make sure she got up.

1015.4Not a bad ideaTNPUBS::NAGLEMon Aug 28 1995 13:5114

Actually, when my daughter was in 2nd grade, we received
a letter from the teacher shortly before christmas requesting
that Santa bring an "analog" clock to each student as they
were learning to tell time. So, after hunting for weeks,
I found one of those obnoxious ("buzzing") analog alarm
clocks for her. It worked wonderfully both for teaching
her to tell time and teaching her the responsibility of
getting herself up and out of bed each day.... funny thing
is, her little sisters (ages 4 and 5) saw what "big sister"
had and asked for alarm clocks for their birthdays :)

    Hope this helps,
    Monica
1015.5Could help *you* get extra Z's on weekend!AKOCOA::NELSONMon Aug 28 1995 15:168
It might also be useful in helping them to stay in their rooms for
another half-hour on Saturday/Sunday morning so Mom and Dad can
catch some extra ZZZ's. For example --- "when the big hand is on
the 12 and the little hand is on the 7, THEN you can come in and wake
    up Mommy and Daddy."

I'm glad this discussion came up; I've been wondering about doing the
same thing for my 7-year-old, who enters second grade this week.

We tried this with our son (then 6) last year, but he simply sleeps
through both the alarm and the radio. Like his mom (me!), he is a very
deep sleeper. If you have a deep-sleeping child, be more patient than
I was; I gave up after about 2/3 weeks.
