1142.0. "Use of Biaxin?" by ESCBI::PANGAKIS (Tara DTN 227-3781) Tue May 28 1996 14:26

    My daughter [almost 6] (who has broken out in hives when given
    Amoxicillin, Pediazole, and Ceclor) was put on Biaxin, a new antibiotic
    to cure a nagging sinus infection.

    We've gotten away with no antibiotics since she was 2 so this is
    a scary experience. This medication seems to make her EXTREMELY
    emotional and very hungry as well. Anyone else have this experience?

    (I have a call into the pedi...)

    Any advice appreciated,
    Tara

    Aaron had a terrible case of diarrhea and vomitting while on biaxin.
    It's supposed to be kind of rough on the stomach, though not as harsh
    as ceclor. All kids are different though! Aaron was on it for an ear
    infection, it cleared out most of the infection very quickly, but we
    had to quit giving it to him before it was completely gone so the
    infection came back with vengeance.

    I think, however, the stomach problems started with a virus and were
    made worse by the biaxin.

    	It left a metallic taste in my mouth..but nothing else.

    	I have not seen it given to my kids

1142.3The anti-biotic guessing game!SALES::SIMMONSTue May 28 1996 18:2516
    My son (5) took Biaxin with no problem. It gives me a bad metallic
    taste in my mouth though. Bad enough that I had to stop taking it.

    I was told that it was in the same family as Erythromycin ... which
    is may upset your stomach. I know that I get gnawing sensation in my
    stomach when taking Erythromycin ... makes me want to eat all the
    time. I think someone mentioned that their child was hungry all the
    time ... he/she may be experiencing the same sensation I get.

    It's not fun playing the guessing game with anti-biotics. I have one
    child who only responds well to Ceclor and the other one to Suprax (by
    the way ... Suprax is a once a day antibiotic ... and my son loves the
    taste!).

1142.4Biaxin for pneumoniaTOOK::STLAURENTFri May 31 1996 10:3511

     Jeffrey (6) recently took Biaxin for pneumonia. He didn't like the
    taste, and would run and brush his teeth right after taking it. (Not
    necessarily the way I want to encourage him to brush his teeth, but it
    was effective! 8-)

     He was sick enough that I didn't notice if he was eating more than
    usual after taking the medicine.
