164.0. "Testing after conception" by WHEEL::POMEROY () Wed Jun 10 1992 15:07

I would like to find out how soon after conception, the blood
test AND the urine tests show results.

I was told, a few years ago, that the blood test shows within
10 days of conception. Recently, I have heard that it will show
the next day after conception. The urine test, however doesn't
show until the period is missed for a week or so.

    What have you been told?

I took a home pregnancy test the day after I was supposed to start my
period and it was positive. I took another home pregnancy test and
that was also positive. I then went to a clinic and had a urine test
done there and that was also positive. The urine test proved
successful after only 1 day past my period.

164.2I can tell you my experienceBSLOPE::BOURQUARDDebWed Jun 10 1992 15:2110
But I can't tell you *exactly* which day was conception or even ovulation.

I was BBT charting at the time, but I have a gradual climb rather than the
classic spike. My cycles are a *very* regular 27-28 days.

I had a blood test done on day 23: results negative
I did a home urine test on day 29 with evening urine: results positive

One expert examined my chart and said ovulation probably took place on day 14.
Another thought ovulation took place around day 17 or 18.

I tested positive 1 day after missed period with a First Response home
kit. Blood test 2 days later confirmed it.

Both tests are testing for Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (I think I spelled that
right). This hormone builds up in the blood and urine up until about the 73 day
of pregnancy (from conception). There is more in the blood than in the urine,
which is why blood tests are more often cited as the definitive test. And, the
first morning urine is better for testing because the various waste products in
it are more concentrated (including HCG).

Labs report not only the presence of HCG in the blood, but how much. They
have a chart of concentration ranges for each week of pregnancy for about
the first 10 weeks. So, the amount of HCG found can also help pinpoint the
date of conception.

Note that there is individual variation. The home tests say things like -
can return positive results as early as the first missed day of pregnancy. But
in my case, I tested negative on that day (with a home test), but I *knew* I was
pregnant so I waited three more days and then tested positive (but just barely -
a very light pink, not a flaming pink). A blood test confirmed and my daughter
was born when expected.

With my current pregnancy, I waited until I was a week late (again, I already
knew I was pregnant, this was just to make my husband feel better) and
home-tested positive. I didn't have a urine or blood test from the midwives to
confirm. I guess they believe I know when I'm pregnant.

I just spoke to my doctor's office and the nurse said the blood test
shows results 10 days after conception, not before. If you ovulate
late, then the 10 days could be AFTER you're late for your period.

I had the blood test yesterday and it was negative. I was supposed
to start on Monday and didn't (still haven't). However, this is my
first month off the pill and the nurse said that may be why I haven't
started yet. She also said that I may not have ovulated, but I know
better. I KNOW I did because I had the secretion that has been
    mentioned.

I'm just confused because I have ALWAYS had a 28-day cycle, even off
the pill, in the past. She advised me to wait until next week and if
I still haven't started, then have another blood test. I may have
had the blood test done too early.
164.6it's possible you didn't ovulateMEMIT::GIUNTAWed Jun 10 1992 18:337
Not to burst your bubble, but having the mucus change (i.e. the secretion
you mentioned) does not mean that you have ovulated. It means that your
body has done the appropriate changing to allow sperm to pass through in
anticipation of ovulation. You could still have that but not be ovulating.
And you can go the other way where there is no secretion or mucus change to
allow the sperm to pass, but still be ovulating. They are related, but one
happening or not does not mean that the other will or will not happen.

AJ was a late conception, he was conceived on day 19 this much of him I
am sure! I just by chance had my annual gyn exam scheduled for my 28th
day of my cycle, but my cycles had been very irregular for a few months
prior to this so I never got "excited" if I were late. In any case, I
mentioned during conversation to my gyn that this was my 28th day, and
he suggested I have a blood test done anyway, using the reasoning that
it will show up as positive 10 days after conception.

This one came back negative, and a week later when nothing had happened
I had another blood test, he always acompanies mine with an HCG level
too, which came back positive! However, I had suspicions that the
first one was wrong, because with my pregnancies I exhibit two very
distinct symptoms, very tender breasts and inability to sleep, even
though I know my body is exhausted. And these two things were there
bigtime! I know, I've got AJ (he 5-1/2 now) to prove it!!

I used a home pregnancy test the day after I was supposed to get my
period, and it was negative. After another week with no period, I did
another test and it was positive. The urine test at the doctor's
office confirmed it (on my birthday!!). I'm due in November...

My period was a little erratic after stopping the pill (many years
ago), but straightened up very quickly. I'm still very regular (or was
    :*)).

    Good luck!
