245.0. "Solair Recreation League, Connecticut" by CADSE::WONG (In search of a better personal name...) Mon May 28 1990 23:24

I had mentioned Solair Recreation League somewhere else in this
notesfile, but since it is accessible to potentially large number of
readers in this forum I want to reserve this topic for announcements
and discussions of Solair in Woodstock, Connecticut (across the
    line from Southbridge, Massachusetts.

      Solair Associate Member:	$6
      ASA members: $15
      TNS members: $15
Guest of Solair Member: $5 (3 visits only)

All fees apply to singles or families (both names on same membership
      card).

There are other fees for tent and trailer sites (some with water and
      power).

There is a reception held every Saturday afternoon at 4 pm for all
      visitors, guests, and new members.

For people who've been at Solair, there some changes to the beach area.
Alot of the trees on the left side of the beach were removed so that
the beach area is about twice as large now. The beach itself was
enhanced with new sand and is hard-packed and LEVEL! there's a sharp
dropoff into the water now. A new raft sits in the pond. The office
has been moved into the first house inside the gate.

A bunch of us are planning on visiting Solair on June 29th.

If you're planning on going, let me know. I'm going to go there
a couple of weeks in advance to see if they'll let us in on a
    group rate.

245.4Solair Trip - June 29STEPS1::WILSONFri Jun 21 1991 11:2818
I contacted the Solair business office regarding our trip on June 29.
I asked about a group discount, which they said they do not offer.
They only offer discounts to ASA members, NENA/TSN Naturists, etc.

Activities planned for the 29th include a Picnic Supper on the Green
(admission $5.00, BYOB), and a DJ dance under the tent on the beach.
The picnic supper includes soups, salads, and main dishes, as well as
non-alcoholic beverages (and probably desserts). Not bad for $5.00!
The dances usually start around 8:30, so if you're planning on
attending, you will probably want to stay overnight. They have
motel-type rooms available, as well as sites for campers and tents. I
am planning on tenting, and would be happy to share my site with
someone, cutting down on costs. Please send me mail if you are
    interested.

I look forward to seeing (pun intended!) many of you on the 29th!

    Jack

    Just in...

I had not realized that non-affiliated couples get in for $30...
Those are just normal visitors. Even with Naturist membership, it
cost me $20 to get in ($25 without it). Each person in the three
couples who showed up with our group got in cheaper than I did...
    what a gyp. :-)

    Also just in...

It is now possible to get ASA membership through Solair without having
to become a member of Solair. I believe the cost is $25 per year and
    comes with regular ASA privileges.

Yes, Amy and I also got the 30$ treatment, and it was quite worth
  the 30$.

The place is very nice. I guess they are looking to attract more couples.
  Than singles!

After the 3rd visit, you need to decide if you wish to join, or never go
there again. Amy and I would seriously consider an associate membership
wich runs 352$ per year per couple.

Somewhat steep, but, .. possibly worth it. We'll know after the 3rd
  visit.

A full membership runs 703$ per year per couple. Certainly one would have
to be serious about this place to spend that kind of money.

Dave from CXO (naturists don't bother with last names) will be
coming out this way and is interested in visiting Solair with a
bunch of us DEC naturists on the East coast.

The possible times for such a trip are for the weekends of August 31st,
September 7th, and September 14th. WHo's interested in going on
any of those times? I can't make September 7th myself, but that
shouldn't stop the rest of you from going.

When I was out west, I got to meet a large number of the DEC COlorado
Springs naturists at a dinner. I'd like to do that for Dave too.
As soon as I talk to Dave about a good time, I'll let you all know
    when and where.

Amy and I were planning on going back last saturday but it was not
 a good tanning day.

We've been back there once since the group of us went, and of course,
 had a great time!

I'm sure we'ld be up for one more time during the nice weather, those
dates sound OK with us. (well, me at least)

Tentative plans:

Moonstone on the 8th...
Solair on the 14th

If we're really ambitious, The Ledges on Labor Day, though something else
might come up.

As soon as Dave figures out his weekly schedule, we'll see if his
schedule permits a time when we can get a bunch of people together for
lunch during the week. (or dinner, even)

245.11Dave's here!!!CX3PST::KEBLER::D_LEWISI'd rather be in Jamaica, monTue Aug 27 1991 13:5220
    Greetings!!!

I'm the Dave in 245.8 :-). Well I'm here in the "Greater Maynard" area.
Actually I'm working at VAXWRK's in MAynard at PK02. I'm staying in
Tewksbury. So I'm open to dates and places.

Regrettably my wife (Pat) was not able to come back east with me this
time so the Cedar Water's site is out (no single males). But SOLAIR,
Moonstone, Dyer's Woods (are singles OK there???) should be OK.

As far as my schedule this week is concerned I should be done by 5:00
to 5:30 every night. I not sure about next week yet.

I can be contacted at VAXWRK::STUDENT2 (temp account here) or on my
    home node CSC32::D_LEWIS.

    Later....

245.14Visited SOLAIR this last weekendCSC32::D_LEWISI'd rather be in Jamaica, monTue Sep 03 1991 12:2736
I visited SOLAIR this past Labor Day weekend. (I went Sat., Sun., and
Monday). I was very impressed, if we still lived back here I would
seriously consider joining. It is a long haul from where I'm staying
(Residence Inn at Tewksbury), 76 miles and at least 1 hour 20 minutes
    one way.

I very much appreciated the fact that the rules are reasonable and
proper. They do allow holding of hands, assisting putting sun tan
lotion on the back side, moderate and CONTROLLED use of alcoholic
beverages, etc. The fact that reasonable and proper (i.e., no overt
sex) public display of affection is allowed is nice and humanizing. It
allows a couple to walk hand and hand, enjoying the sun and
surroundings. It also ackowledges that even if without clothes normal
human interaction that is proper in public is still proper, holding
hands, even giving a hug in greeting to a long time friend (yes I did
see that happen). By the way the rules handed out when you first check
in spells out the above very clearly, and reasonably, trying to address
    everybodies needs and concerns.

The facilities are nice. The people were very friendly, especially
considering that I was a single male. They have a Saturday afternoon
get together/social to welcome new visitors and members. Very nice.

I look forward to this next weekend. I hope the weather holds. If it
does I'll most certainly be back, (at least Saturday if not both
Saturday and Sunday, again if the weather holds). I hope other DECcies
can also make it this weekend, if you've not visited SOLAIR it is nice,
it might not be the right place for everybody, but this naturist liked
    it very much.

By the way the beach area is nearly as large as the Moonstone beach (at
least the last time I was at Moonstone a couple of years ago, after the
fences, but before NENA took over). That is to say the beach isn't huge
but it is reasonably sized, and useful (no rocks).

    Remember...This Sunday, the 8th...at Solair...
Come y'all to meet a fellow DEC naturist who came back
all the way from Colorado to visit...

If you want to find someone to go in as a couple to get the
reduced entrance fees, send me mail and I'll see who's going...

Well according to the weather people this Saturday and Sunday are
suppossed to be nice. If so I'll be going both days. Thereore if
anybody wants to go both days, or if you can make Saturday but not
Sunday let me know, we can make arangements to meet.

245.19Worcester Magazine articleGAUSS::REITHJim 3D::Reith MLO1-2/c37 223-2021Mon Sep 20 1993 19:066
There was an article on Solair in this week's Worcester Magazine (freebee
newspaper) that seemed about 3-4 pages long with (discreet) pictures. The
opening picture with the photographer and reporter were interestingly posed.
I didn't get to read the article but my wife was pleasantly surprised to
see them use "normal" people for the pictures rather than perfect health
club bodies.
245.20Gay Head was a separate article in the same issueGAUSS::REITHJim 3D::Reith MLO1-2/c37 223-2021Tue Sep 21 1993 16:238
Read the article last night and they did a reasonable job. Turns
out it was the cover story. They also had a woman do an article
on Gay Head beach that was pretty good. Both articles came off
well and showed "normal" size/shape enjoying the beach/resort. I
was a little surprised at the Solair rates but then I had never
priced it before. $17 per couple per day or $1000 for an annual
family membership. I don't know how this compares to previous
years.
245.21didn't make it there this summer! Bummer!MR4DEC::DITOMMASOhappy happy joy joyMon Sep 27 1993 16:418

17$ per couple per day? Hmm, that actually seems cheaper than the last
time I went there. Is that for the summer season?

If so, great - that price makes it very reasonable for a day trip,
    especially since it includes parking!
